Major Australian driver's licence rule scrapped from today
Australia is backflipping on a major driver's licence crackdown from today, with overseas motorists from 14 countries once again able to avoid theory and practical driving tests when transferring their licences in parts of the country.
In Western Australia and Queensland, drivers from 14 countries who were forced to sit theory and practical tests to transfer their licences can now skip both, following a major reversal of the national overhaul just 12 months after it was introduced.
The change comes after the countries were reassessed under the new national framework and found to meet Australia's road safety, licensing and identity standards.
The 14 additions take Australia's Recognised Overseas Licences Scheme to 42 overseas jurisdictions, with New Zealand covered separately under trans-Tasman arrangements.
