Calls for Centrelink payment change as Australian economy 'comes under pressure'

There are renewed calls for Centrelink income support payments handed out to more than a million Aussies to be meaningfully increased as ongoing inflation and the “cost of living crisis” hits those on low incomes the hardest. Community groups say it is getting more difficult to live on unemployment benefits with recipients reporting skipping meals and turning to risky lines of credit.

Anglicare has released its Cost of Living Index 2026 which this year focused on people receiving working-age income support payments. It showed a single person on JobSeeker was potentially falling behind by $251 a week after paying for rent, food and transport.

The government has admitted it illegally cancelled hundreds of thousands of Centrelink payments because of a glitch in the automated system that runs the controversial mutual obligations scheme, it has been revealed.

Speaking at senate estimates on Wednesday, representatives for the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations said the number of illegal cancellations, where people were not given enough time to reconnect to a job provider after missing a compulsory activity as part of their mutual obligations, was in “the vicinity” of 300,000.
