Rower’s death shocks and saddens
UPDATED: At a time when rowing has become part of Norway’s national identity, one of the Norwegian champions of the sport suddenly collapsed and died this week. Olaf Tufte, who’d even led a recent public session of simulated rowing in Oslo to cheer on the national football team, was rushed to hospital but died on Tuesday at the age of 50.
“Tufte brought enormous athletic joy to us as a nation,” Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre told Norwegian media after Tufte’s family released news of his sudden death. Tufte had been found unconscious at the family’s farm in Horten south of Oslo around 3pm on Monday afternoon and attempts to revive him failed. He was flown by helicopter to Norway’s National Hospital (Rikshospitalet) in Oslo but died Tuesday morning after what the hospital reported on Wednesday was “acute heart failure.” Hospital officials said that the family would receive more details from results of an autopsy that will be conducted.

Olaf Tufte Died of Acute Cardiac Arrest, Family Confirms
In a press release reported by Norwegian newspaper VG, his family and Rikshospitalet confirmed that Olaf Tufte died from acute cardiac arrest.
The statement identified cardiac arrest as the cause of the double Olympic champion’s death, while saying his family was awaiting final answers from an autopsy. The family will not comment further on the medical circumstances.
“The family would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has shown patience and understanding regarding the question of the cause of death,” the statement said.
On Monday 20 July, Tufte was discovered unconscious at Tufte Gård, the family farm, at about 3pm. Health personnel arrived quickly and started life-saving first aid before he was flown to Oslo National Hospital Rikshospitalet for further treatment.
