Aussie F1 Grand Prix loses season-opening honour but gains sprint race

Melbourne will be the third stop on the Formula 1 calendar, with Bahrain hosting the season-opening race.
A sprint race will be a feature of the Australian Grand Prix next year.
Melbourne's Australian Grand Prix will not have the privilege of opening the 2027 Formula 1 season, but it will boast two races in its biggest weekend yet.
After landing the chance to open the F1 year in 2026 as it once traditionally did for two decades, the Albert Park event will be the third stop on next season's record-equalling 24-race program.
The main race will take place later than usual on April 4, with Bahrain replacing Melbourne as the season-opening venue on March 14.

The first piece of the 2027 Repco Supercars Championship calendar puzzle has been formally locked in, with the confirmation of the Australian Grand Prix date.
Confirmed by Formula 1 overnight, the 2027 Australian Grand Prix will be held on April 1-4, and is the third round of the new season after Bahrain and Saudi Arabia.
F1 also confirmed Albert Park will, for the first time, host a Sprint race.
The F1 Sprint format features a practice session and Sprint qualifying on Friday, Sprint race and Grand Prix qualifying on Saturday, and the traditional Sunday Grand Prix.

Fans face price hikes and ticketing shake-up for Melbourne Grand Prix
Four-day tickets to the Australian Grand Prix will increase again in 2027 for people who want guaranteed access to the Albert Park circuit.
The Australian Grand Prix Corporation (AGPC) has announced a new ticketing structure for the April event, including a membership offering and the addition of a sprint race.
Where a four-day general admission pass costs $425 – an extra $40 above what it was this year – people who pay an extra $275 for an Albert Park Circuit Club Membership will be granted entry 30 minutes early, as well as discounts on merchandise and priority renewal access each year.
For $1370, grandstand members will get reserved seating in a grandstand of their choosing and a member welcome pack.
