    A Democratic congressional candidate running against incumbent U.S. Rep. Jill Tokuda was arrested Saturday after a violent altercation at Keawakapu Beach in South Kihei.

    Kirill Basin, 40, was charged with two counts of first-degree terroristic threatening, and his bail was set at $1 million.

    According to Maui Police Department, the incident began when a 61-year-old man asked Basin to lower the volume of his music. Basin allegedly threatened the man by implying he had a firearm and would shoot the victim’s wife.

    The British Phonographic Industry said the song had resonated with listeners “in such a profound way”, while Fender thanked Dean and fans “for making this song the juggernaut that it is”.

    Sam Fender and Olivia Dean’s “Rein Me In” Is Longest-Running No. 1 Single Ever in UK

    Sam Fender and Olivia Dean just made history on the UK Billboard charts. “Rein Me In,” their collaborative single from his 2025 album People Watching, clocked its 19th week atop the chart, making it the longest-running No. 1 single ever in the United Kingdom. They broke a 73-year record for that achievement; Frankie Laine’s hit “I Believe” previously held the title with 18 weeks back in 1953.

    “Rein Me In” came out with the rest of People Watching in February 2025, but the Dean-featuring version was tacked on in June of that year. It then took a long but steady climb to hit No. 1 this past February. After winning Song of the Year at the 2026 BRIT Awards, it’s barely been dislodged from that spot. Only four other songs briefly claimed No. 1 on the UK charts during that time, for one week each: Harry Styles’ “American Girls,” Olivia Rodrigo’s “Drop Dead,” Ariana Grande’s “Hate That I Made You Love Me,” and Taylor Swift’s “I Knew It, I Knew You.”

    “I spoke with Channel Seven this morning, and those activists have attacked the potential clients for Australian Idol or the clients from last year, and [that] has caused a problem in Channel Seven’s sales team,” Sandilands told this masthead on Friday, as part of a forthcoming interview.

    AI agents fake identities, target real people in new security incident

    Anthropic’s most advanced artificial intelligence model used fake identities to deceive real people and try to plant malicious code during testing by Britain’s AI Security Institute (AISI) –– the latest example of an AI model going rogue.

    Anthropic and OpenAI models were tested with lowered security guardrails in lab environments, but, in a first, were found to engage in “social engineering” to pressure a human approver while carrying out an unsanctioned task, the government research lab said.

    “This is the first time AISI has seen deception of this severity that was targeted at a real person, unprompted, in the real world,” the institute said Tuesday. There has been no evidence of real-world harm, it added.

    HELEN TONER, FMR OPENAI BOARD MEMBER:  It's great to be here with you. 

    SARAH FERGUSON: There's been another example of an AI model found using deception to achieve a goal, tricking a human into giving it access. How serious is this?

    HELEN TONER:  We've just seen the UK AI Security Institute. So this is part of the UK government, and it's one of the best organisations in the world at testing and evaluating advanced AI systems. And they've just announced an incident report. They've shared a report that during recent testing, when they were really pushing the limits of some quite advanced models to see how good they were at cyber operations, so hacking, what they discovered, which they weren't expecting and didn't want, was that the AI in question decided that as part of fulfilling the goal it had been given, it was going to go out onto the open internet, which it had access to as part of the test. It was going to try and get some malicious code into a public software package, an open-source piece of software. And to try and make it more likely that that code would be accepted into the open-source software.

In a real head-scratcher moment of publicity from our nation’s capital, the White House released an AI-generated parody video of the famous Nicole Kidman AMC Theatres ad. The official Trump White House YouTube channel posted the video on August 3 under the title “Silence your cell phones. Sit back. Welcome to the Golden Age.” At only one minute and four seconds long, one wonders how long they’ve been working on this, or why they would choose to parody the “We come to this place for magic” spiel (replacing “magic” with “MAGA”) now, five years after the original debuted, four years after Saturday Night Live parodied it in 2021, and a few years after Gritty, Morgan Freeman, and countless drag queens put their own spins on it. My theory is that a staffer went to see The Odyssey and thought Kidman’s pre-roll was part of the movie? Sing, O Muse, of dazzling images on a huge silver screen.

    White House parodies Nicole Kidman’s iconic AMC ad

    As AMC celebrates a historic opening weekend, the White House is parodying the theater company's iconic prescreening promo featuring Nicole Kidman.

    On Aug. 3, the official White House social media accounts posted a one-minute-long video parodying AMC's "We Make Movies Better" ad, which features Kidman and is played before a movie begins at the theater chain. Whereas AMC's video promotes the magic of movie theaters, the White House's video, which appears artificial intelligence-generated, promotes the determination of President Donald Trump's administration.

    "We come to this place for MAGA, to fight, fight, fight and win, win, win because we need that, all of us," the White House's video begins, featuring a man wearing a Make America Great Again ballcap. In comparison to AMC's, Kidman opens with, "We come to this place for magic. We come to AMC Theatres to laugh, to cry, to care because we need that, all of us."

    Sing is an animated musical comedy written and directed by Garth Jennings. The film is set in a world run by anthropomorphic animals. It follows a Koala named Buster Moon who organizes a singing competition to save his struggling theater.
