The physical processes that led to the formation of billion-solar-mass black holes within the first 700 million years of cosmic time, a period known as cosmic dawn, remain a puzzle1. Several theoretical scenarios have been proposed to seed and rapidly grow black holes2,3,4, but direct observations of these mechanisms remain elusive. Here we present a source 660 million years after the Big Bang that exhibits singular properties: among the largest hydrogen Balmer breaks reported at any redshift, broad multi-peaked Hβ emission, and Balmer line absorption in several transitions. We model this source as an enshrouded black hole in which the Balmer break and absorption features are a result of extremely dense, turbulent gas forming a dust-free envelope around a supermassive black hole5,6. This source may provide evidence of an early black hole embedded in dense gas—a theoretical configuration proposed to rapidly grow black holes by super-Eddington accretion7,8. Radiation from the black hole seems to dominate almost all observed light, leaving limited room for contribution from its host galaxy. If the source merged with its brighter neighbour, it would resemble the recently discovered ‘little red dots’ with perplexing spectral energy distributions9,10,11. The redness of the black hole is due to gas, not dust12,13, and scattering, not kinematics, gives rise to the complex line shapes and luminosities—black hole masses of these sources may therefore be overestimated by orders of magnitude.

Astronomers discover a new kind of cosmic object – a black hole ‘star’

The body is the size of the entire solar system and glows with a brilliant red light billions of light years from Earth

Astronomers claim to have discovered a new kind of cosmic object, a black hole “star”, which is the size of the entire solar system and glows with a brilliant red light.

The international team made the breakthrough after focusing their attention on a mysterious red spot in images of the early solar system captured by Nasa’s James Webb space telescope.

The object was lurking in the constellation of Cetus, the Whale, billions of light years from Earth. It is thought to have formed 660m years after the big bang, astronomers’ leading theory as to how the universe began.

The strange bright red dots are visible in nearly every image taken by the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). However, the frequency of their cosmic cameos didn’t make them any more explicable to astronomers. But after four years of analysis, researchers now believe they know why it was so difficult to identify these mystery subjects: they’re an entirely new astrophysical source.

“Our picture of this object is evolving very rapidly,” Rohan Naidu, an astrophysicist at MIT, said in a statement.

Three Scots College boys charged with rape of teenage girl

Three students from Sydney’s prestigious Scots College have been charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl in an eastern suburbs alley way.

A 13-year-old boy and two 14-year-old boys were arrested on Thursday over the alleged assault on July 22.

The 13-year-old and one of the 14-year-olds was charged with aggravated sexual assault in the company of others, and two counts of aggravated sexual touching of another person. The other 14-year-old was charged with a single count each of the same offences.

The boys, who cannot legally be identified, were granted conditional police bail and will appear in a children’s court on August 25.

‘Shock’ after former Wallabies, rugby league star loses cancer fight

A former Wallabies and rugby league star has died after a health battle. He was 59.

Brian Smith played five Tests for the Wallabies in 1987, before controversially switching allegiance to Ireland and playing a further nine. He then played 43 league matches for Balmain and Eastern Suburbs in the early ’90s.

A Coalition plan to abolish compulsory energy standards for new homes that help reduce people’s exposure to heat and cold has been criticised by advocates as a “cost-of-living timebomb” that would deepen inequality.

The opposition’s housing and environment spokesperson, Andrew Bragg, said a Coalition government would cut the National Construction Code from more than 2,000 pages to 80, and strip away all requirements for new homes beyond demanding they were “basic and safe”. Longstanding compulsory energy and accessibility measures would become “optional extras”.

Liberals pour cold water on frontbencher's migration comments

Andrew Bragg addressed the National Press Club on Wednesday, covering a variety of topics. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)

Coalition colleagues say Andrew Bragg's suggestion that net migration cuts could be achieved by targeting backpackers and graduated students is not an agreed opposition policy.

In a wideranging speech, the Liberal frontbencher also called compulsory superannuation "a loss of liberty" and that large tech companies should be taxed more.

One Nation leader Pauline Hanson has also been unclear about whether she has a target for net migration.

A Liberal frontbencher's suggestion that net migration under 180,000 is "achievable" with cuts to backpackers and international students is unauthorised and does not reflect an agreed position of Angus Taylor's shadow cabinet.

Teen’s stunning rankings rise rocks tennis with 41-year record to fall

Spanish teen Rafael Jodar has put the tennis world on alert in the build up to the US Open as he threatens to break a 41-year-old ATP record and a first major title becomes an increasingly realistic goal.

Jodar, 19, has been a breakout star on the professional circuit in the absence of Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, featuring as the pointy end of several big Masters tournaments.

The Spaniard advanced to the quarter-finals at the Canadian Open on Monday, just four days after losing in the final of the Washington Open against American world No.8 Taylor Fritz.

His quarter-final appearance in Montreal makes Jodar one of three teenagers to ever reach three or more consecutive ATP Masters 1000 quarterfinals since 1990. Star Spanish duo Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal are the only others to achieve that feat.

Cummins' Odyssey: Aussies embark on legacy-defining year

Australia's veteran unit have achieved just about everything in international cricket. But against Bangladesh in Darwin they begin a 12-month run unlike any seen before

Before Cape Town, the MCG, Chennai, the MCG again, or Lord's, there is Darwin. Along with Mackay, set for its Test debut next week, Australia's north is the remote start line for a quad-continental 2026-27 adventure.

In a year's time, Pat Cummins' men will be a fortnight removed from an Ashes tour that caps a 12-month stretch of Test cricket which will be the first, and probably the last, of its kind. By then Australia will know whether beginning their legacy-defining stretch of games with the oldest XI they have fielded in a century was masterstroke, lunacy, or somewhere in the middle.

Photo reveals major Aussie Test selection hint; Head’s cheeky endorsement — Cricket Daily

A picture from a fielding session in Darwin has revealed a huge hint on who the Australians will roll out for the first Test against Bangladesh starting on Thursday.

It appears that all-rounders Cam Green and Beau Webster will both be picked for the opening Test after cricket journalist Bharat Sundaresan posted a picture to social media showing both Green and Webster in the slips cordon.

Webster was pictured at first slip, next to keeper Alex Carey and Steve Smith at second slip with Green in his preferred position of gully.

Allrounder Beau Webster insists his number one asset is being one of Australia's top batters, which is why he is determined to hold his place in the Test team whether Cameron Green is in it or not.

The 32-year-old suggested he is likely to bat at No.7 in the first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin, which would likely position fellow allrounder Green at No.5 and wicketkeeper Alex Carey at No.6.

Webster's five Test fifties in eight Tests at an average of 41.09 confirm why he is in the team, but throw in his 11 wickets at 24.54 and the value he offers becomes clear.

Yesterday Andrew Bragg announced he would strip the 2,000 page national housing code down to just 80 pages, removing most standards outside health, fire safety and essential structural requirements.

It caused a furore among some including the Australian Council of Social Service (Acoss), who said it would lock renters into skyrocketing power bills to keep their homes inhabitable.

RN Breakfast host Sally Sara asks Bragg if his policy means low-income earners should just accept that they will live in substandard housing. “Yes, definitely”, he replies.

The New South Wales and federal governments have agreed to spend $2.5 billion dollars over 10 years to secure the future of Australia's largest aluminium smelter, Tomago Aluminium.

The smelter's owner, Rio Tinto, threatened closure from 2029 amid the rising cost of renewable and coal-fired power.

The prime minister and NSW premier are expected to visit the smelter in the NSW Hunter region on Thursday morning.

A bailout of the country's largest aluminium smelter will cost taxpayers $2.5 billion dollars, with the New South Wales and federal governments expected to split the bill down the middle.

Labor announces $2.5b bailout for Tomago aluminium smelter

The Tomago aluminium smelter will get a $2.5 billion, 10-year bailout paid for by federal and NSW taxpayers in a deal that will also involve a $1.1 billion facility upgrade by Rio Tinto.

Tomago employs about 1000 people and accounts for 12 per cent of NSW’s electricity demand. In December, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said he would keep the smelter operating beyond the expiry of its current electricity supply contracts on December 31, 2028.

Federal police urged to investigate 'concerning' subsea cable fault

Two separate cables in the Submarine Cable Protection Zone off Perth had both experienced faults in short succession over the weekend.

The cables are vital for international communications between Australia and the rest of the world.

The cables' owner, Subco, is urging the Australian Federal Police to investigate.

Two subsea cables off the coast of Perth, vital for international communications, suffered a fault over the weekend, and the company that owns them urgently wants to know what happened.

The chief executive of the cable company Subco, Bevan Slattery, wrote on LinkedIn yesterday that two separate cables in the Submarine Cable Protection Zone off Perth had both experienced faults "straight after each other and in close proximity to each other".

AFP assessing report in connection with Perth cable faults

The Australian Federal Police is assessing a report of a potential crime after the owner of two undersea cables laid in protection zones near Perth revealed faults commonly attributed to ship activity.

Bevan Slattery, co-chief and founder of SUBCO, which owns the two Indigo cable systems, confirmed to iTnews that the company reported the incidents to the AFP which, he said, occurred near each other and at a similar time.

Slattery first raised the alarm about the incidents in a post on LinkedIn on the weekend, shortly after SUBCO detected “shunt faults” on its Indigo West and Indigo Central cable systems, which together connect Singapore and Sydney with a landing at Perth in-between.

Cambridge’s youngest Black professor has resigned. But the discourse around his departure is rooted in its own distorted reality

Don’t get The Long Wave delivered to your inbox? Sign up here

Few stories have dominated discourse and headlines like that of Jason Arday. The University of Cambridge professor, now resigned, was accused of plagiarism, and appears to have made up an awful lot of fantastical stories about his life. But weeks into the affair, it feels that there has been an additional layer of reality-distortion: this time, by the rightwing press and in broader public discourse. This week, I try to unravel some of the falsehoods that have taken hold around the matter.

I share concerns over Arday appointment, says Cambridge University head

The vice-chancellor of the University of Cambridge has said she understands the concerns raised by the appointment of Jason Arday and shares them too.

In a letter to staff, Prof Deborah Prentice acknowledged the "anger and anxiety around this damaging and difficult case".

The university head also announced Cambridge's investigation would be independent and carried out by senior academics from within and beyond Cambridge and will begin "as soon as possible".

Arday resigned as a Cambridge professor of sociology of education last week amid allegations of plagiarism and questions about some of his achievements.

The 41-year-old – who became Cambridge's youngest ever black professor in 2023 – denies any plagiarism and said the recent furore had led to "an unrelenting level of public scrutiny and personal attack".
