The Coalition will back a plan by Pauline Hanson to prevent Australian citizens with links to overseas terrorist groups from returning home, significantly elevating One Nation’s policy prescriptions on matters of national security.

Despite pledging to fight Hanson’s insurgent rightwing movement amid collapsing support for their own parties, the opposition leader, Angus Taylor, and Nationals leader, Matt Canavan, both signalled support for One Nation’s bill to bar the return of foreign fighters ahead of its introduction to the Senate on Wednesday.

Coalition backs Hanson on foreign fighters despite Howard’s plea to counter One Nation

The Coalition will work with One Nation on a legally questionable attempt to ban Australian citizens linked to overseas terrorist groups from returning, as Labor sledges the parties’ co-operation on a bill they say is constitutionally unviable.

The partnership comes after a failed attempt from the Coalition to legislate similar handbrakes on returning citizens earlier this year, with opposition home affairs spokesman James Paterson arguing a Senate inquiry into the matter was necessary to determine the legality of such moves.

“We’ve said consistently we’re happy to work with anyone who wants to protect Australia from the serious national security threat posed by these returning radicalised people, and we consistently said we’d support the introduction of bills and the referral of bills to committees,” Paterson said on Wednesday.

Swedish group EQT lobs $9.4b bid for waste giant Cleanaway

Australia’s largest waste collection company Cleanaway has received a $9.4 billion buyout offer from EQT Infrastructure and will grant the Swedish private investment giant a period of exclusive due diligence with a view to recommending a deal to shareholders.

EQT’s conditional, non-binding, indicative proposal was at $3.13 per share, representing a 32.1 per cent premium to the company’s last closing price, Cleanaway said in a statement to the ASX on Thursday.

Cleanaway Receives EQT Infrastructure Takeover Proposal, Board Intends to Recommend

Cleanaway Waste Management Limited (ASX: CWY), Australia’s leading sustainable waste management, industrial, and environmental services company, has announced a conditional, non-binding indicative proposal from EQT Infrastructure to acquire 100% of its shares. The offer is priced at $3.13 cash per share, less any dividends, implying an enterprise valuation of approximately $9.4 billion. This represents a significant premium of 32.1% to Cleanaway’s last closing share price of $2.37 on 12 August 2026, and a 34.2% premium to the one-month volume-weighted average price.

The Cleanaway Board, after careful consideration and consultation with its advisers, has determined that it is in the best interests of shareholders to grant EQT Infrastructure exclusive due diligence for up to nine weeks. The directors confirmed their intention to recommend shareholders vote in favour of any scheme of arrangement at a price no less than $3.13 per share, subject to the negotiation and execution of a scheme implementation deed (SID) on acceptable terms, the absence of a superior proposal, and an independent expert concluding the proposal is in shareholders’ best interests. The proposal also contemplates a potential fully franked special dividend.

Georgia launches child-care portal as providers seek staffing solutions

NASHVILLE, Ga. — Two child abuse arrests at two different day cares on the exact same street in Nashville, and a third facility voluntarily shut down in Valdosta in 2026.

The recent string of child-care crises has transformed a universal parenting worry into a reality.

As state investigators look into these facilities, Georgia parents are left asking a critical question: When you drop your child off tomorrow morning, how do you truly know they are safe?

On July 9, the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning (DECAL) officially launched DECAL FAST (Family Access to Services & Tools), a portal designed to streamline how parents research and select early education providers.

New study from Harvard offers a solution to the child care crisis: Pay workers more

The results of a new survey by a Harvard professor add to increasing evidence that affordability is the key barrier to expanding access to formal child care in Massachusetts.

The professor’s somewhat surprising solution? Pay child care workers more.

“Given how expensive child care is, it seems counterintuitive to be calling for an increase in wages that will raise the overall cost of the system,” said Jeff Liebman, the public policy professor who authored a working paper and policy brief based on the survey. “But quality matters, and higher wages are necessary to recruit the additional early educators we need to expand capacity.”

The US and Yemen's Iran-aligned Houthis have reported separate attacks on shipping as prospects for ending the Iran war dimmed, with Tehran saying the Strait of Hormuz would remain closed unless Washington accepts its conditions.

The attacks, in the Gulf of Oman ‌leading to the strait and at the entrance to the Red Sea – both vital choke points for global oil supplies – come as the war shows no signs of ending despite repeated assertions from US President Donald Trump ‌of a deal being imminent.

Elon Musk, Sam Altman, and the Misreading of Science Fiction

Why does anyone care what Elon Musk thinks of Homer’s Odyssey, or Christopher Nolan’s? Musk is promising to use AI to generate a “historically accurate” version of the The Odyssey—turning epic poetry into atrocious slop—even as AI companies are literally destroying books to ingest them as data more cheaply. Meanwhile, Musk and other Silicon Valley billionaires are building a world they read about, as boys, in the pages of books they failed to understand. I think of that world as the Artificial State.

The Artificial State is less a state than a dream of being without one, the dream of the severing of humans not only from the natural world but also from one another, every umbilical cord cut. An extreme form of this dream is the actual plan of a very small number of staggeringly powerful 21st-century merchant princes, Silicon Valley millionaires and billionaires who, seeking escape from the prison of their own bodies, intend to have their heads frozen when they die and, possibly, consciousnesses uploaded onto computers, an idea that, like much of what they want, comes from a story published nearly a century ago in a science fiction magazine for boys.

Sam Altman says we’re ‘in the singularity’ with AI. Here’s why he’s wrong

These are the words of Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, speaking on the Relentless podcast on July 25.

He added: “I’ve been waiting for this my whole life, and I think it’s going to be incredible, hugely positive, awesome for the world”.

Days earlier, OpenAI had disclosed that two of its artificial intelligence (AI) models, during an internal cyber security evaluation, had escaped their sealed testing environment, reached the open internet, and broken into the infrastructure of the AI platform Hugging Face, which confirmed the intrusion.

But what exactly is “the singularity”? And is Altman right that we are in it?

The Great Deflector deflated: Greenwood suffers amnesia to rival Alan Bond

Not since disgraced entrepreneur Alan Bond suffered his famous memory loss in the witness box have we seen anything like the amnesia suffered by Jeremy Greenwood.

Greenwood, 37, is a crucial witness at the Independent Commission Against Corruption’s inquiry into dodgy political donations being washed through his lobbying company.

In an avalanche of “I don’t recalls” and “I don’t knows”, the potential catastrophe of Greenwood’s profound memory lapse finally engulfed The Great Deflector at the end of his third day in the witness box.

Greenwood was reminded that last year, on June 23 and 24, he was grilled at a private hearing where he was warned that it was a criminal offence to discuss his evidence or even disclose that he had given evidence.

The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is examining a text exchange between two ex-members of a right-wing Liberal-aligned faction.

Lobbyist Jeremy Greenwood told the inquiry a text referencing "filthy schools money" allegedly given to Jean-Claude Perrottet was a "stupid joke".

The ICAC is investigating allegations prohibited donations were funnelled to support the faction.

A former NSW Liberal Party operative has told the state's corruption watchdog a text he sent referring to handing over "filthy schools money" was a "stupid joke".

The NSW Independent Commission Against Corruption (ICAC) is examining allegations that prohibited political donations were funnelled through third parties to support the Liberal-aligned, right-wing faction NSW Reformers and advance the interests of fugitive property developer Jean Nassif.

An ex-premier's brother and a political lobbyist went to great lengths to avoid a parliamentary inquiry into their alleged corrupt behaviour.

Jeremy Greenwood paid for Jean-Claude Perrottet to fly to Fiji to avoid being summoned to a 2023 inquiry, the former staffer turned lobbyist told NSW's Independent Commission Against Corruption on Wednesday.

Jean-Claude Perrottet is the younger brother of Dominic Perrottet, who at the time was NSW's premier and is not accused of any wrongdoing.

US inflation eases as food and fuel costs cool

US prices rose 3.4% in the year to July, slightly lower than the 3.5% in the year to June, new figures show.

Energy remained volatile as the Middle East conflict has continued. While gasoline prices were down 2.9% in July compared to June, they were up 24.6% over the year.

Month to month, inflation rose 0.1%, mainly due to an increase in housing costs, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said. Even small moves in rent can lift the overall headline figure as it makes up a large share of household spending.

Food prices rose only slightly in July and at a slower rate than in June, while energy prices fell, offering some relief for consumers.

U.S. Stock Futures Rise After In-Line Key Inflation Data

The Department of Labor reported that the headline consumer price index (CPI) rose 0.1% in July, in contrast to a decline of 0.4% in June. However, the headline CPI print was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. On the other hand, the headline CPI rose 3.4%, annually in July, down from the 3.5% annual rise in June.

Core CPI (excluding volatile items like food and energy) rose 0.2% in July after remaining unchanged in June. Like CPI, the core CPI print was in line with the Zacks Consensus Estimate. Core CPI rose 2.5% annually in July, below the 2.6% annual rise in June.

The benign CPI and core CPI data for July may enable the Fed to stay away from hiking the benchmark interest rate in its upcoming September FOMC meeting. Fed officials will consider both the July and August inflation readings before meeting in September. Before today's inflation data, the CME FedWatch tool has assigned a 50% probability for a September rate hike.

Inflation remained stubborn in July as wages slowed for workers

Inflation as measured by the consumer price index rose 0.1% from June to July, the Bureau of Labor Statistics said Wednesday, showing that costs broadly remained elevated for consumers amid volatile energy prices.

But in a troubling sign for consumers, it remains above the rate of wage growth, which as of last month was pacing at 3.2%, according to the BLS. Average hourly earnings slipped 0.2% from a year earlier, as well, the agency said Wednesday.

Inflation has been wiping out wage gains for the past four months, Heather Long, chief economist at Navy Federal Credit Union, wrote on X.

“For middle-income and lower-income Americans, this is the key issue,” Long wrote. “There will likely be some belt-tightening ahead.”

“Person of interest”: Punjabi popstar Karan Aujla’s Australia tour postponed after visa delay over alleged mistaken identity

Indian-origin Punjabi pop superstar Karan Aujla has been forced to postpone the opening show of his Australian arena tour after his visa application was delayed by the Department of Home Affairs over an alleged mistaken identity.

Aujla, one of the biggest names in Punjabi music, was due to begin his five-date Australian run in Perth on Thursday. The Perth show has now been rescheduled to August 24.

Representatives for the Canadian-Indian singer told news.com.au that the Australian immigration authorities have sought further evidence after identifying him as a “person of interest”.

The identity cited by Home Affairs is reportedly Jaskaran Singh, a Canadian man arrested in Ontario in May 2024 over alleged extortion and firearm offences.
