Why Canadian airline strikes shut down the whole system — and how other countries avoid it

Over the August long weekend, roughly 250,000 WestJet passengers had their flights cancelled when the airline’s flight attendants walked out over pay, including compensation for ground duties performed before takeoff and after landing.

Less than a year earlier, an Air Canada strike grounded the country’s largest carrier for about 60 hours. The two disputes were different in their details, but both exposed how quickly a strike at a major airline can disrupt the wider air-travel system.

I’ve spent years studying how airlines and their unions collide, and in Canada the pattern is becoming familiar. Once an airline strike begins, there is little institutional middle ground between widespread disruption and government intervention. Other countries show this is not the only way to manage a strike.

CLC urges Ottawa to repeal – not ‘codify’ – power to end legal strikes

'The government is asking the wrong question,' says president Bea Bruske amid Canada Labour Code amid consultations

The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) is warning federally regulated employers that a second round of Canada Labour Code consultations could entrench, rather than eliminate, the labour minister's power to end lawful strikes.

The CLC's second submission to the Code review renews its call to repeal section 107, the provision allowing the labour minister to order employees back to work or refer disputes to binding arbitration.

The particular section reads: “The Minister, where the Minister deems it expedient, may do such things as to the Minister seem likely to maintain or secure industrial peace and to promote conditions favourable to the settlement of industrial disputes or differences and to those ends the Minister may refer any question to the Board or direct the Board to do such things as the Minister deems necessary.”

'They will be taken over': Warning for Philippines as dispute with China erupts

We're on a traditional fishing boat, surrounded by sparkling blue waters in one of the most contested places on Earth.

Local Filipino fisherman Joseph has taken us out to his usual fishing grounds near the coastline of Thitu Island, known in the Philippines as Pag-asa.

Sitting on the horizon in almost every direction are Chinese ships, including from the Coast Guard and the People's Liberation Army Navy.

As we're talking, a Chinese helicopter whirrs overhead on a recon flight near the island.

This paradise is on the frontline of a high-stakes contest for control over the South China Sea, through which passes one fifth of global trade.

Australia must not be distracted as China ramps up in the South China Sea

The global pressures of 2026 have created no shortage of distractions. An increasingly interventionist US administration has added to flashpoints from the Middle East to Venezuela and Greenland, consuming the attention of the media, the public and Australia’s strategic decision-makers.

Yet while attention has shifted elsewhere, China has been expanding its coercive reach across the South China Sea and intensifying maritime pressure as part of a broader strategy of regional dominance. These are the waters immediately to Australia’s north. They carry around two thirds of our trade and, as the range of modern military capabilities grows, increasingly provide a platform from which force can be projected towards Australia.

    Foreign Correspondent: Aug 11

Foreign Correspondent this week features “Collision Course” reported by Timothy Swanston, which asks, could the South China Sea become the next battleground?

The South China Sea is one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes – much of what the world buys and sells passes through this single stretch of water.

The Philippines says part of the sea falls into its economic exclusion zone, but China has a very different view. And that’s led to an increasing number of confrontations at sea. On Foreign Correspondent reporter Timothy Swanston travels to the disputed territory on board a Filipino vessel and witnesses first-hand the tense interactions with the Chinese Coast Guard.

Halloween: The Game denied classification in Australia and New Zealand over drug depiction

Developer IllFonic says the refusal stems from a controlled substance in the game

IllFonic's asymmetric horror title Halloween: The Game has been refused classification by the Australian Classifications Board, barring its sale in both Australia and New Zealand.

The developer confirmed the decision on X/Twitter, stating the refusal "was not based on the presence of the iconic slasher, Michael Myers, or the outstanding kills that can be performed in the game, but rather the presence of a controlled substance."

"Despite every effort on our part, the Australian Classification Board has denied Halloween: The Game a rating," the studio confirmed in response to a player.

Authorities ban horror game Halloween: The Game due to mind-altering substances

The upcoming asymmetrical horror game Halloween: The Game will not be released in Australia and New Zealand. The Australian Classification Board refused to assign an age rating to the game, making its official sale in the region impossible.

Developer IllFonic announced this on social media, noting that the team did everything possible to get permission to release the game in Australia. However, they failed to obtain a rating.

The reason for the ban was not Michael Myers or the brutal murders that players can commit as the iconic maniac. According to the developers, the classification board denied the game a rating due to the presence of mind-altering substances in it.

‘RHONJ’ Star Teresa Giudice Finally Reveals Why She Forgave Melissa Gorga

'RHONJ' star Teresa Giudice has opened up about how she and sister-in-law Melissa Gorga finally buried the long-running dispute between them.

The reality star has revealed that they are great with each other right now.

The "Real Housewives of New Jersey" star has revealed that she buried the hatchet with fellow TV personality Melissa Gorga in November 2025. According to Blast, the former revealed how their relationship healed during "What Happens Live" following the premiere of "The Real Housewives Ultimate Girls Trip: Roaring 20th".

Giudice said that the decision to reconcile stemmed from the time she filmed Fox's "Special Forces: World's Toughest Test", with her daughter Gia Giudice. She realized that she needed to be a good role model for her daughters. She said, "I'm always thinking as a mom, you know, 'what kind of lesson can I teach my daughters,' so I was like, 'I'm not fighting.' I wanna show her that I'm gonna end the fighting."

"I did Special Forces with my daughter, Gia, and she was telling me to — she's like, 'You've got to let the anger go with Daddy [ex-husband Joe Giudice].' Good Things Festival Teases First Act Ahead Of 2026 Lineup Drop Tomorrow

Sound the klaxons, dust off your battle vest and prepare to absolutely obliterate the group chat: the Good Things Festival 2026 lineup is officially dropping tomorrow.

After spending the past few weeks drip-feeding us details and politely asking everyone to “put down the pitchforks” while we wait for the actual goods, organisers have now confirmed this year’s full lineup will finally be unveiled on Tuesday, 11th August at 10am AEST.

And it looks like they may have already slipped us our first artist.

Good Things announced the impending reveal via a social media video soundtracked by The All-American Rejects’ immortal 2000s emo-pop banger ‘Dirty Little Secret’.

MCR Out? Limp Bizkit Surges to 97% as the Blunt Meter Revs Up Before Good Things 2026

For months, My Chemical Romance have been the internet’s favourite Good Things 2026 theory.

With the Good Things 2026 lineup finally arriving at 10am today, our final pre-announcement read has moved harder than at any point in the rumour cycle.

And no, that isn’t because another fake festival poster landed on Reddit.

The My Chemical Romance theory was never stupid. In fact, on paper, it made a lot of sense.

Australia was missing from the band’s wider 2026 world tour plans, while their current Asian run finishes in Jakarta on November 22. That leaves enough room to get to Australia before Good Things opens in Melbourne on December 4.

Live: Teal MP urges Albanese to 'pick up phone' and apologise for melon gaffe

Anthony Albanese is again facing calls to personally apologise to his Japanese counterpart over a gesture he made about two melons Sanae Takaichi gifted him, but a government frontbencher insists his remarks have been misrepresented.

South Australia’s royal commission into AI is dividing opinion on Capital Hill.

SA Premier Peter Malinauskas announced the inquiry yesterday, saying it will examine future approaches to AI and policy around it.

Labor senator Tony Sheldon, a senior figure in the party’s right faction who recently argued AI is a "tool" for work and not a decision maker, thinks SA's royal commission will positively contribute national conversation on AI.

Takaichi will brush off Albanese’s melon joke. She shouldn’t have to

Beijing: Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi knows how to roll with the punches.

She is not just a hard-nosed political operative, but a self-made one. With no political pedigree of her own, she has ascended to the top of Japan’s famously dynastic and patriarchal system, which has typically reserved its elite positions for the sons of important men.

One can be fairly confident that in the three decades she has spent toiling in Japanese politics, she has brushed off all manner of innuendo that has typically plagued women in pursuit of power.

Whether he intended to or not, Anthony Albanese has forced her to brush off another one.

AusSuper fights retirement flight with expansion into financial advice

AustralianSuper is preparing for a major expansion into wealth planning, landing a financial services licence and hiring the lawyer who recommended that Labor relax rules on what advice funds can offer members.

The country’s largest manager of retirement savings – with about $410 billion invested – has registered an entity known as AustralianSuper Advice, and this month it acquired a financial licence that would permit it to offer advice in its first major push into the area.

AustralianSuper steps onto the advice high wire that broke the banks

Most members, unable to afford advice or unwilling to pay for it, are turning to Dr Google and ChatGPT, leading to suboptimal outcomes later in life.

It’s a blight on government, regulators and Australia’s biggest super fund that broad-based, useful, cheap and accessible financial advice is only just being rolled out to the wave of retirees set to hit the market.

For five years, the industry has been warning us of the mass exodus of advisers post the Hayne royal commission, which halved the number of advisers to 15,500, while the government whipped super funds into a retirement frenzy to create products most members wouldn’t inherently know when or how to use.
