Dozens killed and more trapped after powerful earthquake shakes Colombia

Bogota, Colombia: At least 47 people were killed and dozens of buildings collapsed in cities across western Colombia on Monday after a powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck the South American nation.

The quake trapped residents under debris, leaving more injured and forcing people to evacuate their homes as far as the capital of Bogota.

The epicentre was in San Jose Del Palmar, a community of about 4800 people in the Choco region about 400 kilometres west of Bogota, the US Geological Survey and Colombia’s counterpart reported. Markets today: Banks weigh down ASX, Sunrise Energy jumps after Pentagon deal

Australia’s sharemarket has started the week on the back foot after a dip in mortgage applications raised questions about coming bank earnings.

The S&P/ASX200 fell 31 points on Monday, down 0.3 per cent to 9232.6, as the broader All Ordinaries lost 21.1 points, or 0.2 per cent, to 9424.

Westpac tumbled more than 5 per cent after its third-quarter mortgage applications slumped by a fifth following May’s federal budget announcement, raising concerns about how banks would fare this earnings season.

Traders had been bracing for budget-related volatility to hit the market, likely starting with the banks, IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said.

“Impacts on property prices, credit growth and removing investors from the market, that’s going to flow through to the banks,” Sycamore said.

Westpac mortgage applications plunge 20pc after budget, rate hikes

Westpac is forecasting a sharp slowdown in demand from property investors, telling shareholders that total mortgage applications had slumped by a fifth since Labor made sweeping changes to tax concessions in May.

Jeongyeon Becomes First Member To Leave JYP: What This Means For TWICE

TWICE member Jeongyeon announced her departure from JYP Entertainment after an eleven-year relationship, signing an exclusive contract with VARO Entertainment on August 10. In a heartfelt Instagram letter, Jeongyeon confirmed she remains a TWICE member, making her the first to leave JYP while staying with the group. This move follows TWICE's remarkable 11-year run with its original nine-member lineup, defying K-pop's "seven-year jinx." VARO, which also represents her sister, will support her "new challenges." This "separate but together" model, where members pursue solo endeavors with different agencies while maintaining group activities, is increasingly common for established K-pop acts, ensuring longevity. Jeongyeon reassured fans that TWICE remains the "center of her life."

The Twice member said the move marks a new acting chapter while stressing that her group activities and fans remain her top priority.

Twice’s Jeongyeon is to pursue her acting career with Varo Entertainment, the same agency as her sister, actor Gong Seung-yeon.

Jeongyeon signed an exclusive contract with Varo Entertainment, home to actors Byeon Woo-seok and Gong, the agency said Monday.

“We are truly delighted to begin this meaningful partnership with Yu Jeong-yeon, who possesses a wide range of charms and boundless potential,” Varo Entertainment said in a press release. Yu Jeong-yeon is Jeongyeon's full name. “We were deeply moved by her sincerity and genuine commitment to acting.”

The end of the low interest rate era is here and it weighs on house prices

Since the low point of February 2023, the national median house price has increased another 35 per cent. (ABC News: Che Chorley)

We seem to have flipped from worrying about rising house prices to worrying about falling house prices.

Last Tuesday's front-page lead in The Australian, reporting the July house price data, was "$230 billion hit: value going, going, gone", describing it as a "once-in-a-generation housing slump".

It does sound like a lot, but it is just a 1.8 per cent decline from $12.77 trillion to $12.54 trillion, so just an old-fashioned page-one beat-up.

Next day, they followed up with "ALP turns blind eye to house market mugging", another beat-up, quoting NAB's new forecast that house prices in major east coast cities (Melbourne and Sydney) would fall 10 per cent.

Mosman to Toorak: The 50 biggest suburb house price falls revealed

Australia’s most exclusive postcodes, from Sydney’s Point Piper, Mosman, Vaucluse, Hunters Hill and Woollahra to Melbourne’s Toorak and Kew East, are bearing the brunt of the housing downturn, a correction that economists say will reduce pressure on the Reserve Bank to raise interest rates again.

North Curl Curl on Sydney’s northern beaches has led the nation’s price declines, with median dwelling values tumbling 19.4 per cent from their September 2025 peak of $4.1 million to $3.3 million in July.

The Reserve Bank has hiked interest rates and the property market is in retreat. So far, so normal.

There is a sense that this year’s fall in home prices feels different from previous episodes. The data tells another story.

Over the past four decades there have been seven property market downturns of varying length and depth, according to analysis put together by Shane Oliver, AMP’s chief economist.

They are often triggered by interest rate hikes, which make home loans more expensive, but they also occur during crises and policy changes.

Proud Poppy Clothing falls into administration but founder says it’s “business as usual”

The founder of Proud Poppy Clothing has told her customers it’s “business as usual” after the clothing retailer fell into voluntary administration last week.

Proud Poppy Clothing operates an online shop front, as well as a small number of physical retail stores in Victoria and Queensland.

Known for its colourful womenswear, the business has amassed a social audience in the hundreds of thousands thanks to its on-trend designs and a size range that encompasses sizes 6 through to 30.

The business was founded in 2019 by Tara McKeon, who made the leap into entrepreneurship after a career in nursing.

In an Instagram post at the end of last week, McKeon confirmed the business is now in voluntary administration, but said: “this is not a business shut down, bankruptcy or closure of the overall business”.

Stax is back, saved by founders of sneakerhead marketplace

For the past a month and a half, the website of Australian activewear brand Stax has been replaced by a customer FAQ page that states: “SALE IS CLOSED”.

The company, which was best known for form fitting activewear with minimal branding, collapsed in June after its lender, NAB, called in receivers to try to recover millions in debts owed to several parties.

But one day, and no one is quite sure when, the site will be back up and running. “This is a fresh start for Stax,” said entrepreneur and Stax’s new co-owner, Justin Truong.

“This is such an iconic Australian brand that we want to give it another chance. It could have been sold off to a faceless corporation that could strip it for parts.”

Married investors save collapsed activewear brand Stax

Australian activewear brand Stax has been rescued from collapse after a private investor couple snapped up the embattled business.

Justin Truong and Sandy Li-Truong, the married entrepreneurs who founded Australian streetwear retailer Pushas, have acquired Stax after receivers were appointed to the brand in June.

Pushas co-founders Justin Truong and Sandy Li have acquired Stax.  AFR

An investor group led by Truong and Li-Truong have bought the Stax trademarks, design intellectual property, the NANDEX™ fabric technology and its digital assets from FTI Consulting for an undisclosed sum.

The acquisition has been labelled a private investment and will operate as a separate entity to Pushas.

Episode 6 recap: Scott Cam makes heartfelt apology after major production mistake has one team packing their bags

Week two of The Block 2026 starts with an apology – from host Scott Cam.

The $20,000 figure he said Chantel and Wyatt spent last week was wrong, which explains their confusion at the end of last night’s episode.

They feel like they’ve been stitched up on purpose and don’t want any part of it.

Meanwhile, the other four teams meet with Scotty and Alice Stolz for the results of the House Decider, where the homes are locked in without any argy-bargy at all:

Four of the teams take their first chance to suss out their rivals’ work thanks to Open for Inspections, while members of production are on the hunt for Chantel and Wyatt.

TV Ratings (5/8/2026): Deadline Pressure Pushes The Block To The Brink

Pressure mounted across Australian television as renovation deadlines sparked chaos and The Traitors’ claimed its first victim.

Nine’s The Block came in third with a total TV national reach of 1,785,000 and a total TV national average audience of 898,000, delivering its most tense episode of the season with the cast sent into meltdown mode in the lead-up to the first guest bedroom reveal.

With deadlines closing in fast, the usual cracks in team dynamics widened into something more personal. Adam found himself cast as the episode’s unexpected villain, with fellow contestants growing increasingly frustrated by what they saw as his relaxed, unbothered attitude while everyone else scrambled to finish their spaces.

Why Ricky Stuart had every right to publicly blast Corey Horsburgh

Ricky Stuart was well within his rights to give Corey Horsburgh both barrels at Sunday’s press conference.

Forget the nonsense about the Canberra coach “gaslighting” his forward – who had been sin-binned for striking Dane Gagai in the closing stages of Canberra’s 30-24 loss to Newcastle, which ended their slim finals hopes – as claimed by Corey Parker on SEN radio. Forget the rubbish about how Stuart should have kept his thoughts to himself, or that any reprimand should have taken place behind closed doors.

For what it’s worth, Stuart did blast Horsburgh in the sheds straight after full-time. Horsburgh did not appreciate it, and hit back.

Unpopular move to save Fozball; why Dragons have to rethink call on young gun

No wonder Ricky Stuart didn’t waste his energy trying to defend Corey Horsburgh’s latest brain explosion.

You will notice Dane Gagai is lashing out with his feet as Horsburgh has him pinned to the ground.

And whatever it was that Horsburgh was doing with his left hand positioned around the centre of Gagai’s buttock’s region, the optics certainly didn’t look good.

Morgan Freeman Releases First Album at 89: Blending Blues, Gospel, and Orchestral Music

Morgan Freeman has added a new title to a career already full of them: recording artist. The Oscar winner released his first-ever album, Morgan Freeman's Symphonic Blues Experience, on August 7 via Decca Records – a 12-track project tracing 100 years of blues history, arriving just one year shy of his 90th birthday.

Freeman serves as producer and narrator on the album, which pairs Delta blues traditions with full orchestral arrangements from the Chineke! Orchestra, a majority-Black ensemble based in London. The collection features collaborations with blues veterans Taj Mahal, Keb' Mo', Shemekia Copeland and producer Lawrence "Boo" Mitchell, and spans from Blind Willie Johnson's 1927 recording "Dark Was the Night, Cold Was the Ground" to a cover of "I Lied to You" from the film Sinners. One standout track, "I'll Take You There," brings the gospel tradition directly into the project, featuring vocalist Tierinii Jackson alongside the Stax Music Academy Choir.
