Shane Warne's plea back in spotlight as Cricket Australia braces for more bad news in Ashes finale

Cricket Australia, do you want the good news or bad news first? After estimated losses of $15 million due to the first and fourth Test of the Ashes series finishing within two days, nervous CA officials are praying the SCG New Year's Test goes the distance.

While not under any strict orders to prepare a "road", the SCG ground staff will present a pitch far removed from the grassy, Russian roulette of a deck that saw 36 wickets fall in two days of the truncated MCG Boxing Day Test. But the one thing no one can control is the weather – particularly in Sydney in early January.

Ashes weather Sydney forecast: Latest updates, SCG conditions for fifth Test – Australia vs. England

Australia and England play the fifth Ashes Test at the notoriously wet SCG in Sydney.

The annual match has regularly suffered rain delays and washouts in previous years, but the forecast is looking up this tine around.

Can England continue their momentum or will Australia put a footnote on the series?

Hot, humid and with a high likelihood of rain and a storm on the opening day.

Warm day with it being extremely unlikely that play is affected by wet weather.

If the Test makes it, it's likely to be a hot day with no rain.

'Irresponsible': Sparklers and venue become focus of Swiss bar blaze probe

Swiss authorities have announced they believe sparklers are to blame for starting a deadly bar fire in the ski resort town of Crans-Montana.

A multi-agency investigation is ongoing and will examine whether there were compliance issues at Le Constellation bar, where the blaze broke out on January 1.

Officials are trying to identify the casualties, but on Friday revealed the first concrete numbers: so far, 40 people have been killed and 119 injured.

The prevalence of sparklers at a Swiss ski resort bar where dozens of people died in a fire this week has been branded "irresponsible", as authorities probe potential compliance issues there.

Swiss ski resort fire: Families of missing teens desperate for news

The families of teenagers missing after a fire at a bar in a Swiss ski resort are facing an agonising wait for news and appealing for information about their loved ones online.

The fire in Crans-Montana was likely caused by sparklers placed on bottles of champagne that came "too close to the ceiling", Swiss officials told a news conference on Friday.

An investigation into the fire will focus on the materials used at the site, the bar's fire safety measures, its capacity and the number of people inside at the time, Valais Attorney General Beatrice Pilloud said.

Swiss authorities have said it could take days if not weeks to identify the victims of the fire, which killed 40 people and injured another 119. Officials said 113 of the injured had been identified, with authorities still working to identify the other six.

Crystal Palace have announced the signing of striker Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur.

ESPN reported that the two clubs had agreed a deal worth £35 million ($47.2m) earlier this week, with a successful medical on Thursday.

Sources told ESPN that Johnson took time to decide on his future — with AFC Bournemouth also an option as they aim to replace Antoine Semenyo, who is expected to join Manchester City.

However, talks between the 24-year-old and Palace boss Oliver Glasner were positive and saw the Welshman decide to head to south London. He will wear the No. 11 shirt.

Brennan Johnson on Friday completed a move from Tottenham to Crystal Palace for a reported fee of £35 million (AU$70,362,425).

The Wales international, 24, has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal at Selhurst Park.

The forward, who fell out of favour under Thomas Frank at Spurs despite being the London club’s top scorer last season, is set to make his debut for Palace in their Premier League match against Newcastle at St James’ Park on Sunday.

Crystal Palace agree £35m fee for Brennan Johnson as race for Spurs forward hots up

Crystal Palace have agreed a club-record £35m fee with Tottenham for Brennan Johnson but are facing strong competition from Bournemouth to sign the Wales forward.

Palace are desperate to obtain reinforcements in attack after a punishing schedule that has meant them playing 30 games in all competitions already this season because of their Conference League commitments. With the Senegal forward Ismaïla Sarr away at the Africa Cup of Nations, the club identified Johnson as their primary target for the January window and opened talks with Tottenham several weeks ago.

The south-east London club have now agreed a deal for the 24-year-old that could surpass their record signing of Christian Benteke from Liverpool in August 2016. However, it is understood that Johnson has yet to decide on his future, with Bournemouth now expected to match Palace’s offer as they search for a replacement for Antoine Semenyo. The Ghana forward is likely to join Manchester City in a deal worth £65m.

The first Muslim to play for Australia has been an inspiration for many in the way he has broken down barriers during his career

More than half an hour into the press conference, with his retirement from Test cricket confirmed, Usman Khawaja was asked about the role of opening the batting and its relevance in the modern game. He answered with ease, detailing the specific mental challenges of facing the new ball. Minutes later, he was asked how Australia can unite after last month’s terrorist attack at Bondi Beach. Again, there was little hesitation before the lengthy reply. He cited the teachings of the prophet Muhammad, politicians who “try to divide and conquer” and closed with his reflections on the tragedy itself. This was no ordinary sporting farewell.

As effortless as Travis Head makes opening the batting look at times, Australia may well only gain a true appreciation of the “toughest job in cricket” now Usman Khawaja has called time on his career.

When Khawaja’s 51-minute retirement press conference turned to his second Test life as an opener – stroking, sweeping and ultimately stacking up 3412 runs at an imposing average of 48 – he couldn’t help himself.

“Now batting five to finish my career – how nice,” Khawaja said with a grin. “What a dream … I wake up a bit more relaxed. I can sip my latte [and think], ‘Ah the openers will go out first and I’ll come in later.’

Firefighters Give Water to Thirsty Kangaroo Joeys Hiding Under Burnt Tree

Firefighters came to the aid of a group of thirsty kangaroo joeys in bushfire-ravaged Boddington, Western Australia, recently shared video shows.

Footage released by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services (DFES) shows members of the Rockingham Volunteer Fire and Rescue Service and Wanneroo Central Volunteer Bush Fire Brigade give water to joeys they found hiding under a burnt tree.

“After a drink of water and a quick check, the roos safely hopped on their way,” DFES said.

Boddington residents were forced to evacuate their homes on Christmas Day after a fire burned more than 4,000 hectare of land, reports said.

Western Australian firefighters find two joeys hiding beneath burnt out tree after bushfire

Firefighters in Western Australia have made an incredible find beneath a burnt out tree after fires tore through parts of the states south west.

Volunteer fire fighters from Rockingham and Wanneroo Bush Fire Brigades were patrolling and mopping up areas around Boddington after destructive bushfires swept through earlier this week.

Coming across a burnt out tree, the fire fighters were shocked to find two young joeys hiding underneath.

“It’s moments like this that quietly stay with you long after the fire is out,” the Department of Fire and Emergency Services WA said.

The volunteers gave the young kangaroos water from a bottle before they were given a quick check over by the crew for any burns.

Video has captured the sweet moment a group of firefighters found a pair of joeys sheltering underneath a burnt tree at the Boddington bushfire.

According to DFES, crews from the Wanneroo and Rockingham volunteer fire brigades found the joeys crouched underneath the fallen tree while patrolling the fire at Boddington which burnt 4149ha of bushland earlier this week.

The video shows a firefighter approaching the joeys and offering them a drink of water from a bottle, which the thirsty joeys were all too happy to accept.

Wuthering Heights to The Odyssey: 16 of the most exciting films coming up in 2026

From Emerald Fennell's divisive new adaptation of Emily Brontë's Wuthering Heights to Christopher Nolan's wildly anticipated ancient Greek epic, here are BBC critics' picks of the films to see in the year ahead.

Emerald Fennell's bold take on Emily Brontë's 1847 novel is already one of the year's most divisive films. The trailer alone evoked both fascinated anticipation and pearl-clutching resistance. On social media, Brontë purists have objected to everything from the film's raw sexiness to its casting, complaining that Margot Robbie is too old to play the teenage Cathy and Jacob Elordi too white to play Heathcliff, described in the book as "dark-skinned". But Fennell, who proved herself to be a daring original with Promising Young Woman and Saltburn, knew she was taking an iconoclastic approach. "I wanted to make something that was the book that I experienced when I was 14," she has said, describing it as "primal, sexual". Her version of those two doomed, passionate lovers is also stylised, with bright-red costumes and red-orange skies. Owen Cooper of Adolescence plays the young Heathcliff and Hong Chau is Cathy's loyal maid, Nelly. And if you don't feel like channelling your inner teenage girl, the year brings a more traditional adaptation of a 19th-Century classic, Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility. Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as Elinor Dashwood in the story of marriageable sisters and their pursuit of love. (CJ)

Surprises, franchises and sequels: 10 new films that prove cinema is not dead

If you listen to the people in the know, they will tell you how bad things are in the movie business. Movies are doomed. Streaming has won. The weird thing is, 2025 felt like a very busy year at the movies. And the 2026 film calendar is already jam packed with big-ticket titles.

To be fair, it is dominated by franchises, sequels and safe bets. A little bit of tension in the economy, and everyone gets risk-averse. But if you thought the movie biz was now all about Netflix and its made-for-television library, then you might be surprised how often you’re going to be down at your local cinema this year.

Woman dies in suspected mountain lion attack, Colorado's first deadly encounter since 1999

A woman has died in a rare suspected mountain lion attack in Colorado on Thursday, officials said.

Hikers told authorities they saw a mountain lion near a person who was lying on the ground 100 yards away around 12:15 p.m., on the Crosier Mountain trail in unincorporated Larimer County, Colorado Parks and Wildlife said in a news release.

The hikers scared the lion away by throwing rocks and then attended to the adult woman, the release said. One of the witnesses was a physician and "did not find a pulse," said Kara Van Hoose, spokesperson with Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The victim’s identity and cause of death will be released by the Larimer County Coroner.

US woman killed in rare suspected mountain lion attack

A woman has died after a rare suspected mountain lion attack on a hiking trail in Colorado, an incident that would mark the state's first such fatality in decades if confirmed.

Two big cats potentially involved in the suspected New Year's Day mauling were euthanized, state wildlife officials said.

At around 12:15 pm on Thursday, hikers on the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County spotted a mountain lion near a person lying on the ground, Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) spokeswoman Kara Van Hoose said.

"As they started to get closer, they started to scare the lion from the area by throwing rocks at the animal, and it eventually went away," Van Hoose told reporters. "One of the witnesses is a physician, and did not find a pulse."

Suspected mountain lion attack in Colorado leaves woman dead

A woman was found dead Thursday on a hiking trail in northern Colorado, in what authorities believe to be a rare fatal mountain lion attack.

Hikers on the Crosier Mountain trail in Larimer County spotted a mountain lion near a person lying on the ground around 12:15 p.m., according to Colorado Parks and Wildlife.

The hikers drove the animal away by throwing rocks before finding the victim had no pulse.

“Mountain lion attacks in Colorado are considered to be very rare,” CPW spokesperson Kara Van Hoose said at a news conference. While 28 previous attacks have been reported to CPW since 1990, the last fatal attack was in 1999, the agency said.
