Braves' Profar tests positive again, banned 162 games by MLB

Atlanta Braves designated hitter Jurickson Profar received a 162-game suspension after testing positive for a performance-enhancing drug for the second time in the past year, Major League Baseball said Tuesday night.

Profar tested positive for "exogenous testosterone and its metabolites," the league said, adding that the suspension would take effect Friday.

Profar, 33, is the sixth player to receive a 162-game ban for PED use since MLB increased the penalty for two-time offenders to a full season in 2014. He will forfeit the entirety of his $15 million salary and will be ineligible for the postseason. Profar also will be ineligible for the upcoming World Baseball Classic, where he was set to represent the Netherlands, whose team includes players from his native Curacao.

Braves' Jurickson Profar hit with 162-game suspension after second positive PED test in last year

The Atlanta Braves won't have designated hitter Jurickson Profar for the 2026 season. The 33-year-old was suspended 162 games after testing positive for exogenous testosterone and its metabolites, the league announced Tuesday.

The suspension, for Profar's second offense, is effective Friday. The Braves voiced their disappointment in a statement:

We were incredibly disappointed to learn that Jurickson tested positive for a performance-enhancing substance and is in violation of MLB's Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Our players are consistently educated about the Program and the consequences if they are found to be in violation. The Atlanta Braves fully support the Program.

Last year, on March 31, Profar tested positive for a banned substance called human chorionic gonadotropin, a hormone normally produced during pregnancy that, in males, can stimulate the production of testosterone. As a result, MLB suspended him for 80 games and ruled him ineligible for the postseason, which the Braves missed for the first time in eight years.

Major League Baseball announced a 162-game suspension for Atlanta Braves outfielder Jurickson Profar on Tuesday, but the Players Association is pressing forward with an appeal, according to people briefed on the union’s plans.

The league said Profar’s suspension will begin on Friday. Penalties for first-time offenders under baseball’s Joint Drug Agreement are “stayed” until the appeal is heard. Profar as a second-time offender is permitted to appeal, but without a stay. His appeal will now be expedited, one source said.

A clump of human brain cells can play the classic computer game Doom. While its performance is not up to par with humans, experts say it brings biological computers a step closer to useful real-world applications, like controlling robot arms.

In 2021, the Australian company Cortical Labs used its neuron-powered computer chips to play Pong. The chips consisted of clumps of more than 800,000 living brain cells grown on top of microelectrode arrays that can both send and receive electrical signals. Researchers had to carefully train the chips to control the paddles on either side of the screen.

OPINION — When Woolworths began rolling out its new entryways in select stores across the country, early reports weren't great.

The gates, which first appeared at Woolworths Camberwell in Melbourne, feature two lanes through which customers can enter, with white flexible prongs positioned along them to prevent customers leaving using the entryway.

A Woolworths spokesperson told nine.com.au the trial is to "explore new ways to respond to increased theft in our supermarkets", which has become a major issue for supermarkets.

"We know the majority of our customers do the right thing, and we thank them for doing so. This is to deter those that don't," they said.

A photo of a child "running the gauntlet" to enter a local Woolworths store has sparked a discussion about a controversial new in-store security feature. A parent claimed their child was "smacked" by a security gate recently installed at the supermarket giant's Bass Hill store, leaving the child in tears.

"These recently popped up at Woolies in Bass Hill, and talking to other parents, they've smacked a lot of kids," the parent said, referring to the new security gate currently being trialled at a select number of stores.

While they admitted the injury didn't cause "serious harm", they argued it was "not a good start" to the shopping trip after their child was crying because of the "entry gauntlet".

Gorillaz confront grief with Indian music greats on new album

In Western cultures, death is typically treated as linear. A one-way ticket to finality.

Conversely, the Hindu concept of Samsara treats it as a transition in an endless, cyclical journey of birth, death and rebirth.

It's a belief that underpins the latest project from Gorillaz — the brainchild of Blur frontman Damon Albarn and graphic artist Jamie Hewllett, who've always loved a concept.

Their latest? The Mountain, the virtual group's ninth studio album, which shifts their signature genre-bending, star-studded global pop to India.

"Having a location seems to work quite well for us," Hewlett tells Double J's Karen Leng.

Gorillaz: The Mountain Album Review

The idea had been for Damon Albarn and Gorillaz co-creator Jamie Hewlett to renew their creative vows by embarking on some “classic Indian odysseys.” Between their two trips to the country, however, the assignment changed shape. In the space of 10 days, both men’s fathers died, and the second visit took on an air of somber pilgrimage. Albarn swam in the Ganges, scattered his father’s ashes into its mythology. Somewhere along the way, he settled on a concept for The Mountain, the follow-up to 2023’s pallid Cracker Island. As well as recruiting a suite of classical Indian musicians, he would raid his archives for unreleased recordings by deceased Gorillaz collaborators, enacting a convocation of souls.

See Gorillaz's Tribute to Classic Cartoon Movies Like 'The Jungle Book' in New Animated Short

In Gorillaz‘s new short film, The Mountain, the Moon Cave and the Sad God, characters 2D, Russel, Noodle, and Murdoc are on a journey through an Indian landscape that looks a lot like The Jungle Book, complete with a googly-eyed python and a menacing tiger, as they queue up for the unveiling of a spectacular mountain view. The clip coincides with the arrival of the band’s ninth album, The Mountain.

As the title suggests, the clip fuses together three songs from the record: the Indian-influenced “The Mountain” and indie-rock-cum-hip-hop (aka Gorillaz-like) “The Moon Cave,” which open the album, and “The Sad God,” which closes the LP. Musicians featured on the three tracks include Bobby Womack, Anoushka Shankar, and the late De La Soul MC Trugoy the Dove.
