NASA, DOE partner to develop nuclear power source for the Moon

As preparations continue in Florida for the launch of the Artemis II mission as soon as next week, NASA announced a partnership with the U.S. Department of Energy to develop a new power source for future Artemis missions on the Moon.

The agencies are studying small nuclear fission reactors that could generate tens to hundreds of kilowatts of electricity. This level of power would support life-support systems, scientific instruments, communications equipment, and systems that could extract oxygen or fuel from lunar soil and ice.

Generating power on the Moon is difficult. Apollo missions were carefully scheduled to land during daylight, and crews stayed on the surface for no more than about three days. In contrast, a lunar night lasts 14 Earth days, during which solar panels produce no power.

NASA and DOE to collaborate on lunar nuclear reactor development

WASHINGTON — NASA and the Department of Energy have agreed to work together on development of nuclear reactors for the moon as industry awaits the release of a final call for proposals.

NASA and DOE announced Jan. 13 that they had signed a memorandum of understanding related to NASA’s Fission Surface Power (FSP) program. Under the program, NASA will work with industry through one or more funded Space Act Agreements to develop a nuclear reactor capable of operating on the moon.

NASA announced last summer that it would pursue FSP as a public-private partnership. According to a memo signed July 31 by the agency’s acting administrator, Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy, the system is required to produce at least 100 kilowatts of power and be ready for launch by the end of 2029.

The 2030 Race for a Moon Reactor

The US’s federally funded space program has been struggling of late. With the recent cancellation of the Mars Sample Return mission, and mass layoffs / resignations taking place at NASA, the general sense of a lack of morale at the agency is palpable, even from a distance. Jared Isaacman, the billionaire software entrepreneur and rocket enthusiast who was recently confirmed as NASA administrator during his second confirmation hearing, hopes to change that, and one of his priorities is pushing the Artemis missions for a permanent human presence on the Moon. However, at least one big technical hurdle remains before being able to do so – how to power a base during the two week long lunar night. A recent press release describes how NASA, and another branch of the federal government (the Department of Energy – DoE) hope to solve that problem – with a lunar-ready nuclear fission reactor.

Scottie Scheffler wins American Express for 20th PGA Tour title

The world's No. 1 player loves coming to the California desert early in the season to take stock of his game and get into tournament shape. There wasn't much wrong Sunday in The American Express.

Scheffler made birdie on half of his holes, going from a two-shot deficit early to a lead that stretched to six shots late before he closed with a 6-under 66 for a four-shot victory.

"There's always a certain amount of rust when it comes to playing competitive golf," Scheffler said. "You can simulate as best you can at home, but you can only get into the heat of the moment when you're posting a score and you're in contention when you're at a tournament. So it's nice to see some of the stuff that I've been being practicing and working on has paid off."

One start, one win: Scottie Scheffler is back from his offseason, and he isn’t wasting time. The world No. 1 collected another trophy at The American Express on Sunday. He won by four shots.

At a venue where it is notoriously difficult to separate from the pack, Scheffler did just that. He reminded the tour that he is operating in another dimension. And considering it’s his first event of the year, he is only getting started. Again.

On Sunday, Scheffler came from one shot behind to shoot a final-round 6-under 66 and snag his 20th PGA Tour win. Just when you think you know what Scheffler is capable of, he shatters expectations and adds to a resume that continuously makes history — even after hitting a ball in the water on his penultimate hole.

As records stack up, could Scottie Scheffler be even better in 2026?

LA QUINTA, Calif. – In a tournament that so often delivers drama, the fact that the outright leader Scottie Scheffler dumped his tee shot in the water on the famous island par-3 17th on Sunday should have meant something.

Instead, the only material difference it made at The American Express was in the final margin. .css-vqpqpw{transition-property:var(–chakra-transition-property-common);transition-duration:var(–chakra-transition-duration-fast);transition-timing-function:var(–chakra-transition-easing-ease-out);cursor:pointer;outline:2px solid transparent;outline-offset:2px;color:#004c95;-webkit-text-decoration:underline!important;text-decoration:underline!important;-webkit-user-drag:none;}.css-vqpqpw:focus-visible,.css-vqpqpw[data-focus-visible]{box-shadow:var(–chakra-shadows-outline);}.css-vqpqpw:hover,.css-vqpqpw[data-hover]{color:#0084FF;}.css-vqpqpw:focus,.css-vqpqpw[data-focus]{border:1px solid #004c95;border-radius:0.4rem;}.css-vqpqpw:visited{color:#551A8B;}Scheffler won by four strokes at PGA WEST, shooting a gaudy 27-under over 72 holes to outpace his playing partners, Si Woo Kim and Blades Brown.

NAB’s Chief Sees Australia as Growth Bet

National Australia Bank’s new business banking chief, Andrew Auerbach, believes Australia is better positioned for long-term growth than his native Canada, citing optimism, entrepreneurial momentum and comparatively strong economic fundamentals. Speaking less than six months into the role, Auerbach said Australia stands out as global diplomacy and trade settings continue to shift, as reported in The Australian.

Recruited last year by NAB chief executive Andrew Irvine, also a Canadian and former colleague at Bank of Montreal, Auerbach stepped into the role after Rachel Slade’s departure. Since relocating, he has settled in Melbourne and says the transition has been smooth. Australia, he notes, feels familiar: the business culture, banking system and customer mindset closely resemble Canada’s, but with a stronger sense of opportunity.

NAB joins Commonwealth Bank in major interest rate move ahead of key RBA decision: ‘Start getting prepared’

NAB has become the second Big Four bank to hike fixed interest rates ahead of the Reserve Bank of Australia’s (RBA) hotly anticipated February cash rate meeting. It joins Commonwealth Bank and Macquarie who hiked rates last week.

NAB has increased fixed home loan rates by up to 0.40 percentage points, to make its lowest rate 5.74 per cent for one year. It joins a total of 54 lenders who have increased at least one fixed rate since the last cash rate decision in December, where rates were kept on hold.

Both NAB and Commonwealth Bank are expecting the RBA to increase the cash rate from 3.60 to 3.85 per cent when it meets on February 2 and 3.

Government agency deliberately broke law for years, federal watchdog finds

Services Australia became aware that it was not fully complying with new legislation in 2019, but the issue is yet to be rectified.  (AAP: Mick Tsikas)

Services Australia has known it was not fully complying with child support laws for six years, according to a scathing report released by the Commonwealth Ombudsman.

Legislative amendments introduced in 2008 and 2018 created "unintended consequences" in which some parents with less than 35 per cent care of a child were technically eligible for child support, despite a longstanding government policy that this is not the case.

A government spokesperson said legislation to rectify the "technical legal anomaly" would be introduced when parliament next sits in February.

Ombudsman says agency knew for years that part of its child support processing not in line with law

Services Australia knew its internal practices relating to child support payments conflict with the law but did nothing about it for six years, a report from the commonwealth ombudsman has found.

In 2019, the agency identified that its child support practice that stipulated that parents with less than 35% care of a child do not receive financial support was not aligned with the law.

Legally, one parent providing less than 35% care of a child is entitled to receive some support from the other parent, but Services Australia said it has a “longstanding principle” that parents with less than 35% care of a child should not be eligible for child support as applying the law could result in situations where a parent with “little, or even no care, of children” receives payment from the main carer.

A government department has been caught out deliberately breaking the law because of a bizarre loophole which could force separated parents to unfairly pay child support.

An ombudsman's report into Services Australia and the Department of Social Services found the agencies were "knowingly non-compliant" with child support legislation.

Commonwealth Ombudsman Iain Anderson said the scenario was similar to the Robodebt scandal, because it also involved a government department ignoring the law – albeit for a different reason.

A trio of teenage tennis scions are spotted together at the Australian Open – but who are their famous fathers?

The twin daughters of Mirka and Roger Federer joined forces with Cruz Hewitt at the Australian Open this week

Two great tennis dynasties took front row seats at the Australian Open this week, as the scions of two great champions sat side by side at the Rod Laver Arena. Seventeen-year-old Cruz Hewitt, the budding champion son of former world number one Lleyton Hewitt, has clearly been fostering a friendship with 16-year-old Myla and Charlene Federer, the twin daughters of (arguably) the sport’s greatest player, Roger Federer.

The trio were spotted courtside for the first-round match-up between two-time Australian Open champion Jannik Sinner and the world number 92, Hugo Gaston. The match was something of an anti-climax, with Gaston retiring at 2-6, 1-6 down. For tennis fans, however, the next generation of tennis legends in the crowd – laughing and sharing jokes during the game – were the real stars of the show.

Roger Federer's wife wears the most expensive accessory at the Australian Open – and you will NOT believe how much it costs

Roger Federer's wife Mirka was spotted wearing a hugely expensive accessory as she lapped up the atmosphere at the Australian Open this week.

The Swiss tennis icon has returned with his family to Melbourne Park for the first time since 2020, and rolled back the years for a series of exhibition matches.

As Carlos Alcaraz put it, class never truly disappears and the 20-time Grand Slam champion showcased that earlier this week.

Federer took on Norwegian star Casper Ruud for an exhibition match prior to the tournament and teamed up with Ash Barty and Andre Agassi for a mixed doubles match against Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter.

Next Gen: Cruz Hewitt Hangs with Federer Twins

Their famous fathers were rivals, and Cruz Hewitt and twins Myla and Charlene Federer are friends.

Cruz Hewitt, son of former No. 1 Lleyton Hewitt, watched Jannik Sinner’s Australian Open first-round win over Hugo Gaston seated next to Roger Federer’s daughters, Myla and Charlene.

Cruz Hewitt and compatriot James Duckworth received a doubles wild card and were set to play their AO first-round doubles match on Court 13 on Wednesday.

Devoted AO fans will remember 11 years ago when 20-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer hit some balls with the young Cruz Hewitt during an Aussie exo.

NBA Legend Dennis Rodman and Daughter Trinity’s Estranged Relationship Through the Years

Dennis Rodman and his youngest daughter, Trinity, have had ups and downs over the years.

Rodman and ex-wife Michelle Moyer welcomed Trinity in 2002, one year after the birth of son DJ. (Rodman also shares eldest daughter Alexis with ex-wife Annie Bakes.)

More than 20 years later, Trinity declared on the “Call Her Daddy” podcast that the NBA legend was “not a dad” to her.

“Maybe by blood, but nothing else,” she said in December 2024. “ I don’t want to say negatively, but more realistic about it. We tried to be that foundation and to be the good people around him. Because in reality, we never really asked for anything unless we really needed it. … He’s never understood that people could actually just want to be around him and to just want to make him happy.”

Trinity Rodman contract saga ends with record Spirit deal

USWNT head coach Emma Hayes believes the team have missed Trinity Rodman's experience and quality while she was injured. (3:09)

United States forward Trinity Rodman signed a record three-year contract Thursday with the Washington Spirit to remain with the club through 2028, ending months-long uncertainty over the star's future.

The deal is worth over $2 million annually, including bonuses, multiple sources told ESPN, making her the highest-paid player in league history, and the highest-paid female player in the world, according to her agent Mike Senkowski of Upper 90 Sports Group.

Salaries in woman's soccer are not made public but Spain's three-time Ballon d'Or winner Aitana Bonmatí was reported to be the world's highest-paid women's player when she signed her current with Barcelona in September 2024.

Trinity Rodman signs record deal with NWSL despite union concerns

Rodman will become the highest paid women’s soccer player in the world after signing a three-year contract.

Trinity Rodman will be the highest-paid women’s soccer player in the world under a new deal that has tested the National Women’s Soccer League’s salary policies and its relationship with the players’ union.

The Washington Spirit forward, who helped the team to a championship immediately upon going pro out of high school in 2021, signed a landmark three-year contract that will pay her an estimated $2 million per year and keep her with Spirit through 2028.

In signing the deal Thursday, Rodman ended months of speculation about whether she would be the latest U.S. Women’s National Team star to make the lucrative leap across the Atlantic.

In the promo for Wednesday night’s premiere of ABC news satire Always Was Tonight, host Tony Armstrong promised comedy that was “black, cracked and risking the sack”. He delivered.

The 30-minute special, timed around January 26, ran hard at targets such as Sky News (“announcing a rival to triple J called triple K”), mining magnate Gina Rinehart (“owner of Australia’s biggest hole”) and the ABC itself.

“It’s an honour to be the first black face fronting an ABC comedy show since Chris Lilley,” Armstrong said, opening the show. In character as the ambassador for White Australia, Bjorn Stewart (Black Comedy) later joked about examples of a “white corroboree” including “Adelaide Writers Festival” and an “ABC staff meeting”.

Cha Eun Woo Releases Personal Statement Addressing Tax Evasion Allegations

Cha Eun-woo, one of South Korea’s most commercially successful entertainers, broke his silence on January 26 regarding allegations that he owes more than 20 billion won ($14 million) in additional income taxes. The 28-year-old actor and singer posted an apology on social media while currently serving mandatory military service.

"I will humbly accept the final judgment made by the relevant authorities and take full responsibility in accordance with the outcome," Cha wrote in his statement, according to The Korea Herald. He added that he was "deeply sorry" over the controversy and vowed to "comply faithfully with all tax-related procedures going forward."

The apology comes four days after his agency Fantagio released an initial statement saying the matter had not been "finally confirmed or officially notified" and that they would "actively clarify" their position through legal procedures.

Advertisers Replace Cha Eun-woo with Kim Soo-hyun in New Campaigns

The South Korean advertising landscape is undergoing a significant shift following serious allegations against actor and singer Cha Eun-woo. Recently, Cha has been embroiled in a tax evasion investigation, prompting brands to reconsider their associations with him.

On January 23, Shinhan Bank, which had recently chosen Cha as its advertising model, took immediate action. The bank made all promotional materials featuring Cha private across its social media platforms, including YouTube. This decision was in direct response to news regarding an alleged tax evasion totaling about 20 billion won, equivalent to approximately $15 million.

The fallout from these allegations isn’t limited to Shinhan Bank. On January 22, skincare brand Abib also pulled Cha’s promotional content from its official YouTube channel. This trend signals a growing hesitance within the advertising sector regarding partnerships with celebrities under scrutiny.

Singer and actor Cha Eun-woo, who is currently serving in the military, issued a public apology Monday over recent allegations of large-scale tax evasion, pledging full cooperation with tax authorities.

The Australian Open tennis championships are reaching the end of their first week, but the hottest ticket so far hasn't been Carlos Alcaraz, Jannik Sinner, Iga Swiatek or Aryna Sabalenka.

Instead, observers were stunned by the queues to watch the world number 49, Alexandra Eala of the Philippines. Her first-round match had been put on court number 6, leaving many fans disappointed as they were left unable to find a seat.
