    Excessive heat

Why it matters: A suite of new analyses has found that regulations that provide basic safeguards like water, shade and rest for workers in hot conditions can help lower the numbers of heat-driven injuries, workers' compensation claims and even deaths.

How have regulations helped? The most recent study, published in December in the journal Health Affairs, looked at California's rule protecting outdoor workers from heat, the oldest such rule in the country. Researchers found the regulations led to at least a 33% drop in heat-related deaths among workers after 2010 — an estimate of several dozen lives saved each year.

Read on … to learn more about the ways the government can protect workers.

Rising Heat Means More Vigilance in Keeping Workers Safe

The best of R&I and around the web, handpicked by our editors.

White papers, service directory and conferences for the R&I community.

Extreme heat is on the rise in the United States, challenging the ability of many industries and  employers to keep workers safe, especially in high risk industries with considerable amounts of outdoor work, such as construction.

While we can expect unabated climate change to continue to pose a threat, we do have a playbook to mitigate these risks. Devoting the resources to create a plan, and more importantly, implementing the plan, can quite literally save lives on the jobsite.

Jenny's son died after working in extreme heat. She believes a policy could have saved him

Jenny Newport's son, Glenn, died 13 years ago from working in extreme heat. She believes a heat policy could have saved him.  (ABC News: Crystalyn Brown)

Jenny Newport's son, Glenn, died while working on a coal seam gas pipeline construction project.

Temperatures at the construction site where he was working had exceeded 40 degrees Celsius that day.

Ms Newport is calling for state and federal governments to implement heat policies to help protect workers.

It has been 13 years since Jenny Newport's son died from extreme heat while on a worksite in Queensland, and she believes not much has changed.

Ms Newport had hoped there would be an effective heat policy for every worksite across the state after her son's death.

As soon as the roof closed over Rod Laver Arena on Saturday, tennis enthusiasts split into two distinct camps.

One side saw a conspiracy. There was no other explanation for the way the Australian Open’s extreme heat policy was enacted at exactly the moment Jannik Sinner’s entire body started cramping. The Italian world No.2 was a break down in the third set to Eliot Spizzirri and in such physical distress he might well have retired within minutes.

Severe warning in scariest conditions set to hit Aus Open since Black Saturday as rule changes loom

Melbourne is bracing for its hottest day on record since 2009 as extreme temperatures prepare to hit the Australian Open.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe heat warning across the state of Victoria as it forecasts temperatures to reach as high as 45C at around 5pm.

It could mark the hottest day in the city since Black Saturday in 2009, which resulted in devastating bushfires including 137 fatalities.

It means Melbourne Park will cop a scorching heatwave that players and officials will both be affected by, with the start of the wheelchair events postponed until Wednesday.

Queensland Reds have landed a major coaching coup, signing the Blues' Super Rugby Pacific-winning coach Vern Cotter as Les Kiss' replacement.

Cotter will join the Reds on a two-year deal for 2027 and 2028 Super seasons, the Kiwi following a well-worn trail of his countrymen jumping across the Tasman Sea.

The 63-year-old former Scotland and Fiji boss also tasted success with Clermont-Auvergne in France's Top 14 and will arrive at Ballymore with an impressing 25-year coaching resume.

Cotter said he was impressed with the Queensland Rugby Union's vision and excited by the level of rising talent he would have to work with in Brisbane.

Blues coach leaving for Aussie Super Rugby side, ruling out ABs job

Vern Cotter’s third year as Blues head coach will be his last.

The Herald understands Cotter will finish up with the Blues at the end of the 2026 season and take over as the Queensland Reds head coach the following year.

Outgoing Reds head coach Les Kiss is set to
assume the Wallabies head coaching post from Joe Schmidt in July.

Cotter committing to the Reds rules him out of the race to replace Scott Robertson as All Blacks head coach, stripping another option from the contenders and potential coaching teams.

Schmidt has also ruled himself out of contention for the All Blacks while highly regarded assistant Tony Brown is committed to the Springboks through to the 2027 World Cup. Wayne Smith is also departing New Zealand rugby.

Míchel warns about Getafe and demands the best version of Girona at Montilivi

The Girona FC coach, Míchel Sánchez, appeared before the media ahead of the next league match against Getafe, starting his speech with a message of condolence, stating: “First, I want to express my condolences to the victims of the train accidents in Adamuz and Gelida, and also to Getafe player Davinchi, who lost his father in the same accident.”

Already focusing on football, Míchel highlighted the importance of having top-level players and emphasized the figure of Marc-André ter Stegen, stating that “Ter Stegen is a very top player and makes us better,” thus underlining the impact that these types of profiles have on collective performance.

Montilivi wants to extend Girona's winning streak

This Monday, January 26 at 9 p.m., Girona returns to Montilivi to host Getafe in the match of the 21st round of the EA Sports League. The team has started the second half of the season in the best possible way with an away victory against Espanyol. This result means that Michel's team has achieved three consecutive victories – the best streak of the season – against Espanyol, Osasuna, and Mallorca. This places them in eleventh place with 24 points. At the moment, the standings are very tight with three other teams having the same points: Elche, Real Sociedad, and Athletic Club; two with 22, Osasuna and Rayo Vallecano, and three with 21, Sevilla, Mallorca, and Getafe.

Aston Martin become second F1 team to miss vital testing in Barcelona

Williams unable to take to the track at all in Spain

The Aston Martin team have admitted they are to miss at least one day of their allotted three at Formula One’s first pre-season test in Barcelona and will not run their car before Thursday at the earliest. They are the second team to fail to take full advantage of the opening test after Williams also announced they would be unable to take to the track at all in Spain.

Testing is taking place from Monday to Friday this week at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya with teams able to use three of the five days to assess their cars. They have been designed to entirely new regulations and with new engines this season and consequently three full pre-season tests are being held. But as the track running began, Aston Martin conceded they would not be there at the off and issued a statement.

F1’s secret ‘shakedown’ explained… and why one team won’t even be there

Formula 1 teams will be testing their new cars in Barcelona this week, but don’t call it a pre-season test.

Instead expect to hear the officially sanctioned term ‘shakedown’ used strictly in place of the word ‘test’ — even if the regulations refer to it as pre-season testing.

Official pre-season testing will then comprise two three-day tests in Bahrain in February, giving teams a maximum of nine days of testing in the lead-up to the season-opening Australian Grand Prix on 8 March.
