Gavin Newsom's war of words with Donald Trump goes global at forum

It appears California Gov. Gavin Newsom is taking his war of words and online squabbling with President Donald Trump from the United States to a worldwide stage in Davos, Switzerland.

On the fourth day of the World Economic Forum on Jan. 22, Newsom repeatedly aimed at Trump during a 30-minute talk, calling the president's actions not normal.

Newsom said the U.S. is witnessing corruption under Trump at a scale this country has never seen before, and is trying to "take him down" and the state of California. The governor also said he believes Trump is weaponizing institutions like the FBI and the Justice Department against his enemies, such as Federal Reserve Chair Jerome Powell, as well as personally profiting off his presidency reportedly to the tune of nearly $1.5 billion.

Newsom shows off knee pads for CEOs 'selling out' to the Trump administration

California Gov. Gavin Newsom on Thursday showed off knee pads that he suggested were for leaders "selling out" to the Trump administration.

Speaking at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland, Newsom said the red knee pads were available to buy via a website he had created.

"The last round of knee pads sold out, just as our law firms are selling out. Many American universities are selling out, and yes, many corporate leaders are selling out to this administration," Newsom said.

"These are available in bulk, too," he said, holding up one of the knee pads, which showed U.S. President Donald Trump's signature.

Janice Tjen speaks softly, carries big slice to make history again for Indonesia at Australian Open

The former Pepperdine University player became the first from her country to win a main-draw match in Melbourne since Yayuk Basuki in 1998.

The 23-year-old became the first from her country to win an Australian Open main-draw match in 28 years on Tuesday, dismissing former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez, 6-2, 7-6 (1).

Elena Rybakina has reinforced her status as a key women’s singles title contender with a 6-4 6-3 first-round triumph over Kaja Juvan at Margaret Court Arena.

“I’m happy with the serve, it really worked today,” the No.5 seed said. Rybakina won 83 per cent of first-serve points during the match, eclipsing her WTA Tour-leading 74.9 per cent record at the four majors in 2025.

Tennis, WTA – Australian Open 2026: Rybakina takes out Juvan

Elena Rybakina extended her flawless opening-round record at the Australian Open on Tuesday, moving to 7-0 in Melbourne starters with a clinical 6-4, 6-3 victory over Kaja Juvan. The world number 5, who reached the final here in 2023, required just over an hour to secure her place in the second round, signaling a continuation of the devastating form that defined her late-season surge in 2025.

The victory serves as a confident opening statement for Rybakina’s title hunt. While Juvan offered resistance in the early stages of the first set, she was ultimately unable to cope with the relentless pace and depth of the Kazakh’s groundstrokes. Rybakina’s serve, widely considered the most effective weapon in women’s tennis, remained impenetrable during the critical moments of the second set, where she struck five aces and won over 75 percent of her first-serve points.

Davos: delegates gather at launch event for Trump’s ‘Board of Peace’– live updates

Trump declaration of Greenland framework deal met with scepticism as doubts persist

Trump says we now have ‘peace in the Middle East’, repeats his claim to having settled eight wars, and then suggests that “another one’s coming pretty soon”.

He means Russia-Ukraine, calling it “the one I thought was going to be an easy one” but turned out to be the most difficult.

29,000 people, mostly soldiers, died last month, Trump says, a “terrible” toll.

He adds “we’re making a lot of progress” in the peace talks, echoing what we heard from Steve Witkoff this morning.

And finally, Donald Trump returns to the lecturn for some concluding remarks, in which he riffs about Gaza’s real estate possibilities.

LIVE: Trump launches ‘Board of Peace’ with signing ceremony in Davos

The board was initially aimed at rebuilding Gaza due to the ongoing Israeli genocide, but was later pitched as a global conflict body.

Israel and Azerbaijan have agreed to join Donald Trump's "Board of Peace".

Benjamin Netanyahu's office initially criticised the makeup of the board's executive committee, which will be chaired by the US president.

Mr Trump is expected to provide more detail about the board at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has agreed to join US President Donald Trump's "Board of Peace" but other countries including Norway and Sweden have rejected invitations.

Boris Becker hit out at the "contradiction" over Naomi Osaka's flamboyant entrance to the Australian Open.

The Japanese star walked out for her first-round match on Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday night wearing a jellyfish-inspired flowing green and white outfit accompanied by a white hat, veil and parasol.

While tennis' big names making fashion statements is far from new, Osaka's ensemble took things to a new level.

Former world No. 1 Becker, who is a pundit for TNT Sports, had mixed feelings about the look, saying: "These are, of course, images for the media.

Naomi Osaka’s jellyfish-inspired outfit steals the show at Australian Open

Over the years, tennis has had its share of noteworthy fashion moments. And Osaka added another in Melbourne

Naomi Osaka’s renowned 125mph serve is even faster than a jellyfish’s sting, which can cover 10 to 20 micrometres in less than one-millionth of a second. But it wasn’t just the invertebrate’s speed that the tennis player was calling on when she wore a jellyfish-inspired outfit to face Antonia Ruzic of Croatia in their first-round match at the Australian Open.

Entering Melbourne’s Rod Laver Arena, the 28-year-old tennis player’s look consisted of a pleated miniskirt over wide-legged trousers, a wide-brimmed hat with a white veil and a parasol. Jellyfish-esque elements were also incorporated into her on-court outfit, which featured a watery turquoise and green palette and soft frills on the warm-up jacket and dress, alluding to tentacles.

Australian Open Day 5 Women's Predictions Including Amanda Anisimova vs Katerina Siniakova

The second round wraps up on Day 5 of the Australian Open. We have 16 women’s singles matches on deck to decide who reaches Round 3. As always, our writers at LastWordOnTennis share their thoughts on the matches. We split the 16 matches between four articles. In addition to this article, the others feature Iga Swiatek vs Marie Bouzkova, Naomi Osaka vs Sorana Cirstea, and Madison Keys vs Ashlyn Krueger. Predicting these matches are Nurein Ahmed, Zain Mustafa, and Jordan Reynolds. Who do you think will advance to Round 3?

    Nurein:
Rybakina was clean as a whistle in her opening match against Juvan. She had to be patient because it was a tight straight sets win. Gracheva is a natural ball striker on this surface, but relies so much on timing and rhythm and Rybakina will easily expose her limits.
    Prediction: Rybakina in 2

'Nothing to lose' for doubles queen Siniakova in singles clash with 4th seed Anisimova

The women's doubles world number one remained cautious about her chances of a maiden Australian Open third round singles appearance when chatting to Flashscore in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Siniaková produced one of the smoothest and most one-sided first round victories of the women's singles draw, offering up only two break points to her Hungarian opponent Panna Udvardy on the way to a cruisy 6-1 6-2 triumph.

A long-time advocate of the benefits of playing both singles and doubles on tour and at Grand Slams, Siniaková is making her 13th consecutive appearance at the Australian Open and has never progressed from the second round of the singles draw, whilst her well-documented domination of the doubles circuit includes three women's doubles titles in the past four Australian Opens (2025 with current partner Taylor Townsend and twice with compatriot Barbora Krejčíková.

The aurora australis has put on a light show across many Australian states.

There are reports the phenomenon was visible as far north as Queensland.

The chance to witness auroras may decline in coming years because of the sun entering a new phase, an expert says.

An impressive aurora australis has been seen in many parts of Australia, reportedly reaching as far north as Hamilton Island in Queensland.

Tuesday night's light show was caused by a severe solar storm hitting the Earth.

People have reported the phenomenon across Tasmania, Victoria, South Australia, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia.

The spectacular aurora australis, also known as the southern lights, may be visible as far north as Victoria and New South Wales

A ‘severe’ solar storm, which is being monitored by the National Emergency Management Agency, could make auroras visible in Australia as well as cause disruptions to the power grid.
Here’s what you need to know about the solar storm.

Just like our planet has weather, so does the sun.
Australian astrophysicist, science communicator, and course director for Swinburne Astronomy online and mission director for Swinburne Microgravity Program, Dr Sara Webb said “a solar storm is a sudden event on the surface of the sun, where particles and plasma are ejected away from the surface and into space.”

Netflix’s New Figure Skating Romance Shares A Connection With ‘Heated Rivalry’

Between Heated Rivalry and the 2026 Winter Olympics in Italy, ice sports are having a moment. And on Jan. 22, another frosty obsession enters the chat.

Based on Jennifer Iacopelli’s 2022 novel of the same name, Finding Her Edge follows teen figure skater Adriana as she juggles her Olympic dreams with family pressure and a twisty love triangle. As Iacopelli recently told HELLO! of the new Netflix series, it does have a few things in common with its fellow rink romance, Heated Rivalry — like its ice-sports backdrop and Canadian talent, including the actor Aidan Shaw, who appears in both series.

The collision of young love and high-profile competition also plays a role in both shows. “Our yearning manifests differently when the yearning becomes too much — we are a family show — but it is genuine teenage yearning that I adore, the way you see it in The Summer I Turn Pretty, or All the Boys,” Iacopelli explained.
