AFL apologises as Butters case is dismissed due to juror misconduct

PORT Adelaide superstar Zak Butters has had his umpire abuse charge thrown out by the AFL Appeal Board after it was ruled a panel member's decision to listen to part of the original Tribunal hearing from his car was a "miscarriage of justice".

And the AFL has apologised to both Butters and umpire Nick Foot, saying it will now "reflect" on the outcome of the case and take lessons from it, while the Power has doubled down on its call for the Tribunal process to be reviewed.

Butters was fined $1500 by the AFL Tribunal last Tuesday for abusing field umpire Foot during the Power's loss to St Kilda in round five.

AFL apologises after Butters appeal upheld, umpire abuse conviction quashed

The AFL has apologised for the inconvenience caused to all parties after a tribunal decision to fine Zak Butters for abusive language against umpire Nick Foot was thrown out on appeal.

Butters was fined $1,500 for using abusive and offensive language after Foot paid a free kick against the Power in their loss to St Kilda at Adelaide Oval.

Foot said Butters asked him, "How much are they paying you?". Butters denied saying this and his club said the star midfielder had been branded a liar.

‘Clear error of law’: Butters WINS appeal after juror’s car trip ruins case… but no call on sledge

Zak Butters has won his appeal over his sledge of umpire Nick Foot, but no finding was made over whether he actually did utter the words “how much are they paying you?”

The details of the case itself were not debated on Monday evening; the Appeal Board instead focuses on whether there was an error in law in how the verdict was determined, or if it was grossly unfair.

Kane Cornes blasts Darcy Fogarty over injury development as golf day emerges before game

AFL commentator Kane Cornes has called out the Adelaide Crows and Darcy Fogarty after reports emerged the forward played golf two days before withdrawing from the Fremantle game. The Crows were keen to play Fogarty for the match against Fremantle on Friday, but the forward didn't take part after injuring his back.

This week, the Crows confirmed Fogarty was out for an indefinite amount of time and will miss this weekend's game against Carlton in Gather Round. Channel Nine's Braden Ingram reported Fogarty played golf on Wednesday before being ruled out of the Fremantle game with a disc-related injury.

The club claimed the injury had nothing to do with golf. Although this hasn't sat well with Cornes. Referencing the footage of Fogarty undergoing stretches at training on Thursday, Cornes took aim at the scenario and feels a player who isn't lighting it up for his team should be more focused on his footy.

Adelaide star Darcy Fogarty under scrutiny for playing golf before being ruled out with back issue

Adelaide forward Darcy Fogarty has come under intense scrutiny after it was revealed he played a round of golf, just two days before being ruled out of Friday’s match against Fremantle with a back injury.

Fogarty, who is a keen golfer, played a round last Wednesday before struggling with a back issue during Thursday’s training session.

He was then withdrawn from Friday night’s clash against Fremantle, and has again been ruled out of this week’s Gather Round blockbuster against Carlton.

Adelaide maintain the back injury is unrelated to golf, but Channel 7 commentator Kane Cornes wasn’t buying it.

The biggest AFL overreactions after Round 2: Fixture criticism is overblown, Keays was out of line

On the ESPN Footy Podcast, the team finds yet another fixture quirk, with West Coast's Round 3 clash set to start at 9:30am AWST. (1:18)

Is the widespread criticism levelled at the AFL's fixturing fair? Should Ben Keays have been penalised for telling a fan to delay the game?

Let's get to this week's overreactions column, where we judge the week's big takeaways as legitimate or irrational.

The AFL has come under fire in the early part of season 2026 for putting together what many footy fans believe to be a disjointed, nonsensical fixture. Is there merit behind the criticism or is this just the latest case of the footy public making a mountain out of a molehill?

AFL to open Marvel Stadium roof when weather is clear during twilight and night games

Marvel Stadium has introduced a new roof policy following last year’s “sweatgate” incident involving Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge.

7NEWS chief AFL reporter Mitch Cleary has revealed that the venue — which is owned by the AFL — will now prioritise fan (and coach) comfort by opening the roof for twilight and night matches when weather conditions are clear.

“And right now, there is no man more relieved in the footy landscape than Luke Beveridge,” Cleary said on Channel 7’s The Agenda Setters on Wednesday.

“Marvel, they’ve changed the rule off the back of this man.”

Cleary then showed vision of Beveridge in the coaches’ box during his team’s Round 1 clash with North Melbourne in 2025.

Bodycam footage has revealed other young AFL footballers were with Hawthorn players Dylan Moore and Connor Macdonald when they were arrested on a cherry picker during a night out in the US over the off season.

The videos, released to this masthead by the Scottsdale Police Department on Tuesday, show Moore and Macdonald initially claimed they didn’t know the boom lift they climbed wasn’t theirs when police confronted them in the Arizona city.

“You’re under arrest for trespassing because it’s not your property,” a police officer tells the pair.

'We don't know the rules': Police body cam vision shows arrest of Hawks players in US

Newly released body cam footage shows Hawks stars Dylan Moore and Connor Macdonald being arrested in the US as their Australian friends plead for leniency from arresting officers.

The players were arrested for climbing on a cherry-picker last November on a a night out, during a team trip to Phoenix, Arizona in the USA.

A police report stated Moore had a small bag containing a crystal substance and a rolled $100 bill in his possession at the time of the arrest.

He told officers it did not belong to him and was not charged over the substance.

In the vision, police on bicycles approach the players as they climb into the cage of a scissor lift in a car park.
