“They can come to me the honourable and easy way or a harder way,” said Guy, who was flanked by his lawyer as he read a short statement addressing for the first time the allegations levelled against him.

Live: Ecuador delirious after Germany upset delivers Socceroos blow

Ecuador has beaten Germany 2-1 to almost certainly seal progression to the next round, while Côte d'Ivoire wrapped up second spot in Group E with a win over Curaçao.

The victory for Ecuador will see them leapfrog Australia as a best-placed third team, if the Socceroos lose to Paraguay this afternoon.

In Dallas, Texas, Japan faces Sweden while Tunisia clashes with the Netherlands from 9am AEST.

The Socceroos are set to face Paraguay in their crucial final Group D match at 12pm AEST. There will be a special standalone blog dedicated to that match.

Another chance for the Netherlands, who have well and truly entered cruise control in Kansas City.

FIFA World Cup 2026 as it happened: Japan make history against Tunisia, Curacao stun Ecuador; Germany defeat Ivory Coast; Netherlands rout Sweden

That concludes our live World Cup coverage for today, a day when we saw many goals, another team eliminated and a few moments in history.

The Netherlands impressed in the early match with a dominant 5-1 win over Sweden, putting the Oranje top of a very competitive Group F.

Germany left it late, coming from a goal behind to defeat Ivory Coast 2-1 in their clash in Toronto.

The story of the day, however, was Curacao providing another shock at this tournament by holding the fancied Ecuador to a scoreless draw and giving the tiny Caribbean nation its first World Cup point in its first tournament appearance. Curacao keeper Eloy Room made 15 saves, falling just behind US shot stopper Tim Howard’s record for most saves in a match.

Strong starts are crucial to securing progression to the knockouts and the best possible passage, but Portugal stumbled out of the blocks on day seven — unlike England, Ghana and Colombia, who all won.

All teams have now played their first game at the tournament and we are preparing for the second round of matches. We get another look at one of the hosts, Canada, later today, who will fancy their chances against Qatar.

France’s litmus test provided positive results with an opening game 3-1 victory over Senegal. Unlike Spain and Brazil, two of the other fancied teams, they did not underwhelm.

From one to 48 – every World Cup team ranked after first game

Argentina kicked off their World Cup defence with an emphatic win – but are not the best side at this World Cup so far, according to our BBC Sport experts.

We've brought together a small team of journalists who, between them, have watched every side's opening game.

And they have ranked all 48 teams at the tournament, from first to last.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Power Rankings: Argentina surge behind Lionel Messi, France go top, USMNT start strong

The World Cup is finally here and after the first round of matches, all 48 teams have gotten their first taste of action in the tournament. We've also already had our share of shocks, none bigger than Spain's draw against Cabo Verde and Portugal's stumble against DR Congo, involving two of the most highly anticipated sides in the competition. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino's United States men's national team enjoyed a dream start, impressing in their debut with a 4-1 win against Paraguay and strengthening their position ahead of their second group-stage match against Australia.

Elsewhere it's been a tournament of stars. Lionel Messi continues to age like a fine wine with an opening game hat trick for Argentina against Algeria. Right behind him are some of the world's biggest goal scorers with Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe all netting twice for England, Norway and France, respectively. As we head into game two, the picture will start to become clearer about which 32 teams will advance from the 48-team field, and which 16 teams (the last place finisher in each group plus the four worst third-place finishers) will go home.

Awkward Hynes reality emerges after gritty Sharks victory

Nicho Hynes is one of the glamour boys of the NRL but the question has to be asked – are the Sharks a better team without him?

Hynes was missing in Saturday night’s gritty 10-8 win over the Warriors.

Nicho Hynes of the Sharks talks to referee Ashley Klein. Getty

And it proved to be the Sharks’ 11th win in their last 12 games without their classy halfback.

When Hynes is out, the under-rated Braydon Trindall gets free rein with the ball and so it was in wet and slippery conditions in Auckland as the Sharks carved out a gutsy win.

'I want to bring another World Cup home': Mulitalo's Kiwis goal

Cronulla flyer Ronaldo Mulitalo is eager to take another step towards regaining his place in the New Zealand squad as he eyes unfinished business at this year's World Cup.

The winger returned to Auckland for the Sharks clash with the Warriors eight months after he tore his ACL in the Kiwis’ Pacific Championships win over Samoa at Go Media Stadium.

Mulitalo made a rapid recovery from the serious injury and has hit the ground running for Cronulla since returning to the field during Magic Round.

The 26-year-old has relished the chance to return home and is using the trip as further motivation to represent his country later this year.

Woman who died after rope-jumping instructors failed to attach cord buried in Brazil

A woman has died in what appears to be a tragic extreme sports accident in Brazil.

Three men have been arrested over the incident, in which instructors failed to attach a rope to her before helping her jump from a bridge in São Paulo state.

Footage went viral over the weekend of Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas being carried to the edge of the abandoned bridge before being let go on Saturday. She fell 40m (130ft) and emergency services pronounced her dead at the scene.

Police are now investigating whether the men are culpable of homicide with eventual intent – when someone does not have the direct intention but assumes the risk of killing – local news site Globo reports.

AFL takes action after Hardwick's umpire comments

Damien Hardwick got a call from AFL head office on Monday after his comments on Friday night

THE AFL has put Damien Hardwick on notice for his comments relating to umpiring decisions on Friday night, with the League's football boss Greg Swann calling the Suns coach personally to address his post-match outburst.

It is understood Swann rang Hardwick on Monday morning to express his disappointment in the comments, although the Gold Coast coach has not been fined and is not expected to be punished further for his words.

Speaking after the match, Hardwick compared GMHBA Stadium to the Roman Colosseum and suggested that umpires were waiting for a reaction from the crowd before making their decision on several incidents.

“Sooks a lot”: Has Dimma’s whinging filtered to Suns players?

Damien Hardwick should stop pointing the finger and making excuses for Gold Coast’s subpar performances in 2026.

The Suns, who many tipped to contend this year, lost a third game on the trot when beaten by Geelong by 45 points on Friday night.

Hardwick was unhappy with the result but in particular the umpiring as he felt the Cats were the recipients of some questionable free kicks which led to goals.

"I reckon they (the umpires) were waiting for the crowd to do this one (thumb down) then, all of a sudden, free kick.

"At the end of the day it is what it is, home-ground advantage, we understand that, we know you're up against it from the start, but a couple of them weren't there."
