Mikel Arteta says Arsenal must keep proving themselves worthy of top spot in the Premier League, starting with their clash against champions Liverpool. (0:41)

LONDON COLNEY, England — Mikel Arteta has said Arsenal have a "point to prove" against champions Liverpool as they aim to last the pace in the Premier League title race.

Arsenal sit six points clear at the table in pursuit of their first league success since 2004 having finished runners-up to Liverpool last term, their third consecutive second-place finish.

Liverpool beat Arsenal 1-0 at Anfield in August in an early setback but Arne Slot's side arrive for Thursday's reverse fixture 14 adrift of their opponents after a turbulent campaign despite spending almost £450 million ($607.04m) in the summer market.

Mikel Arteta has provided an update on the fitness of several first-team players ahead of our clash with Liverpool at Emirates Stadium on Thursday.

The boss was asked about several members of his squad in his pre-match press conference, including Kai Havertz, who is nearing a return to action.

“We are monitoring obviously his load, he has been out for a long time for two different reasons and he is very close,” Mikel said at the Sobha Realty Training Centre. “He trained this morning again and hopefully we are going to have him available in the best version of Kai Havertz.”

    Arsenal v Liverpool: Team news

The fitness of Hugo Ekitike and Kai Havertz is being monitored ahead of the Premier League showdown between Liverpool and Arsenal on Thursday night.

Ekitike, the Reds' top scorer this season with 11 goals in all competitions, missed the 2-2 draw at Fulham last weekend due to a hamstring complaint and delayed onset muscle soreness.

Asked for an update on the Frenchman, head coach Arne Slot said on Wednesday morning: "He has not trained with us until now and let's see if he can today.

"I've said, I think, two or three days ago when we played Fulham that he is not going to be out for long, but because games come so fast he is in between maybe training with the team or it would take him one or two days extra."

Elsewhere in the Premier League: Wolves have finally won their first match of the season, scoring three without reply against sorry West Ham at Molineux. In news to make those of us who remember his Leeds United debut as a 16-year-old feel truly ancient, James Milner celebrated his 40th birthday by helping Brighton to a 2-0 win over Burnley, while Aston Villa got back to winning ways by beating Nottingham Forest 3-1 at Villa Park in today’s early kick-off. Wolves remain 12 points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table but today’s results mean life is looking a lot less bleak for Rob Edwards’ side now than it did first thing this morning.

Gabriel Jesus could start for Arsenal against Crystal Palace – Mikel Arteta

Mikel Arteta has revealed that he's "very happy" for Viktor Gyökeres after he scored the winner for Arsenal in their 1-0 victory over Everton. (0:11)

Mikel Arteta hinted he was ready to hand Gabriel Jesus his first start in 345 days in Arsenal's Carabao Cup quarterfinal clash against Crystal Palace.

Arsenal will take on Oliver Glasner's side at the Emirates Stadium on Tuesday in a competition Arteta hopes will end his near six-year wait for a trophy.

Jesus struck a hat trick in Arsenal's last-eight win against Palace last season before they fell to Newcastle in the semifinals.

Mikel Arteta believes that Gabriel Jesus is ready to make an impact if necessary when we take on Crystal Palace in the Carabao Cup quarter-final on Tuesday.

Our Brazilian forward came off the bench to help us to a 2-1 victory against Wolves before making a similar impression during last weekend's 1-0 win over Everton, a result that saw us go top of the Premier League tree at Christmas.

It’s a quick turnaround to Crystal Palace in the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup at Emirates Stadium on Tuesday, but Mikel feels that Jesus, who scored a hat-trick in the same round against the same opponents 12 months ago, is ready to start if called upon.

Glasner hopes to gee up jaded Palace as he eyes Carabao Cup revenge over Arsenal

Oliver Glasner could be forgiven for preferring to enjoy a rest with his family in Austria a few days before Christmas rather than preparing for Crystal Palace’s 29th game of the season – a Carabao Cup quarter-final against Arsenal on Tuesday night. However, any suggestion that Palace may have to prioritise given they remain in four competitions was unsurprisingly dismissed.

“No, I don’t think so,” said Glasner after his team’s 4-1 hammering by Leeds on Saturday. “If somebody tells me that we lose on purpose, the next day I’m not the manager any more.”

There has been a stark contrast in Glasner’s approach to cup competitions compared to his predecessor, Roy Hodgson, something that first became clear in Palace’s run to the quarter-finals of the Carabao Cup in his first full season in charge. They had been eliminated in that competition as well as the FA Cup by the time he took over at Selhurst Park in February 2024 and picked his strongest team for Palace’s wins over Norwich, QPR and away at Aston Villa – the first of three victories over Unai Emery’s side that season, including the FA Cup semi-final – which set up their meeting with Arsenal in the last-eight. That ended in a 3-2 defeat at the Emirates Stadium in December 2024 thanks to a somewhat controversial hat-trick from Gabriel Jesus after Palace had led at half-time.
