    Dak Prescott on George Pickens, facing Christian Parker's defense, more

    FRISCO, Texas – The 2026 season will be the 11th of quarterback Dak Prescott's career with the Dallas Cowboys.

    Going into his 11th session of organized team activities, his approach to the work in the offseason hasn't changed from when he arrived in Dallas as a rookie in 2016.

    "I'm a big believer in you're getting better or you're getting worse," Prescott said. "When I walk in these doors, anytime I walk in these doors, I'm just trying to be very intentful for anything and everything that I do. Being this far in, obviously leading the other guys, make sure they understand just how valuable these reps are, how valuable it is just us getting to be around each other this time of the year."

    Hopeful Update on Cowboys’ George Pickens Minicamp Standoff

    Will he or won’t he? As the  Dallas Cowboys prepare for their mandatory minicamp this week at The Star, that’s the major question facing the team and star receiver George Pickens. We know the situation as it stands with Pickens–after a brilliant season in Dallas following his trade from the Steelers, he headed into free agency hopeful of landing a long-term deal with the Cowboys. But the Jerry Jones/Stephen Jones front office shut that down immediately, hitting Pickens with the franchise tag.

    Instead of a four-year deal worth $120 million-plus, Pickens was locked into a one-year, $27 million contract. He signed the deal, and though the Cowboys have until July 15 to still tear up the tag contract and give Pickens a contract worthy of the 2025 season he had, he has almost no leverage to force the Joneses to the table.

    At the beginning of any World Cup, you can find all kinds of predictions and prognostications.

    But the vast majority rely on the viewpoint of one person, one computer or one Paul the Octopus, may he rest in peace.

    To kickstart this year’s World Cup, our head of visual stories Mark Stehle used AI, filled with a bunch of cutting-edge statistics, to run what is called a “Monte Carlo simulation” to identify the most likely tournament winner.

    In basic terms, the Monte Carlo simulation ran through the 48 teams and their data with random probabilities thousands of times and reported which scenarios occurred the most.

    The 2026 FIFA World Cup will utilise some of the greatest stadiums in the world across North America.

    Featuring state-of-the-art NFL facilities and one of the World Cup's most historic and storied venues, this tournament will take place amid a spectacular backdrop, despite the ticketing controversies that have threatened to leave vast swathes of empty seats.

    Here are the 16 stadiums in use across the three countries: two in Canada, three in Mexico and 11 in the United States. 

    A lot of the stadiums are better known by names other than the ones that are being used during the tournament.

    Why the economics make this the craziest World Cup ever

    Football World Cups are rarely completely politics-free but never has the beautiful game navigated a geopolitical high-wire act of this kind. The main host is at war with a participant, whose team must commute in on match days from another country.

    Add to that the quite astonishing coincidence of the US, Canada and Mexico, the three co-hosts of the 2026 World Cup, being in the midst of an epic trade war.     The foreign minister, Penny Wong, has confirmed that the government has been asked to provide military assistance to combat missiles and drone attacks that Iran has launched against neighbouring countries.

    “Many countries which are non-participants have been attacked by Iran through this,” Wong said.

    “You would anticipate as a consequence that we have been asked for assistance and we will work through that carefully. And of course, we are.”

    The government is currently considering a request to provide military assistance to a Gulf nation, but it won't say which one.

    Australian troops may go to Gulf

    The Australian government is considering sending military assistance to the Gulf nations facing attacks from Iran, Foreign Minister Penny Wong told ABC Insiders on Sunday.

    Wong confirmed that Australia was asked to provide assistance to the region when she met with her UAE counterpart Sheikh Abdullah Bin Zayed last week (The Age).

    She said Australia would consider providing defence to the Gulf nations but would not participate in “offensive action” against Iran. She said, “This is not Iraq, and we are not the Howard government” (The Guardian). 

    Shadow Defence Minister James Paterson said the Coalition would “carefully consider any deployment proposals” once briefed. He said, “Australia had a proud record of standing with our allies and friends in times of crisis” (ABC).

    Sixers opener recalled immediately by his country ahead of T20 series against Australia

    Pakistan star Babar Azam will miss Friday's do-or-die KFC BBL|15 Challenger final for the Sydney Sixers after being recalled by his country immediately ahead of their series against Australia next week.

    It means Babar will be absent for the rest of the Sixers' finals campaign should they beat Hobart at the SCG to set up a rematch with the Scorchers in Sunday's BBL Final in Perth.

    Pakistan are yet to announce their squad for next month's T20 World Cup but face the Aussies in three 20-over internationals in Lahore from next Friday as a precursor to the global tournament.

    Former Australian batter Mark Waugh called for the Sixers to show some “tough love” and drop Pakistan champion Babar Azam for Friday’s must-win Challenger against the Hobart Hurricanes at the SCG.

    But the Sydney side won’t have to make that call, with the BBL revealing Azam will return to Pakistan to “commence preparations for upcoming international matches”.

    Pakistan are yet to name their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup, while they also have a three-game T20 series at home starting on January 29.
