Sydney shark attack survivor describes moment she came to face-to-face with ‘monster’

In her first media interview since the June incident, Leah Stewart, 34, says her thoughts while being bitten were of her one-year-old daughter

An Australian woman who lost an arm after a shark attack at a beach in Sydney’s eastern suburbs has recalled the moment she came face-to-face with the “monster”.

Leah Stewart, a 34-year-old teacher and mother of a one-year-old daughter, was attacked by a large shark while on a morning swim at Coogee beach on 13 June.

She remained in a critical condition for more than two weeks while receiving treatment for life-threatening injuries that required the amputation of her arm.

Leah Stewart: Australian shark attack victim grateful for 'second chance at life'

An Australian woman bitten by a shark at a popular Sydney beach earlier this year says she has been given a "second chance at life" and will be making the most of it.

Leah Stewart, 34, was mauled by a shark during a morning swim at Coogee Beach in June, suffering multiple bites to her arms and legs, amid a spate of attacks in Australia.

The mother-of-one was placed in an induced coma and had several surgeries, including having one of her arms amputated.

In an online post on Monday, she thanked her supporters who have raised more than AU$550,000 (US$394,000; £289,000) for her, saying her recovery has been "incredibly difficult" but she is making "remarkable" progress.

Massive Attack continued their Australian headline tour in Sydney last night and Rolling Stone AU/NZ was there

It’s funny to consider that once upon a time, back when their classic 1991 debut album Blue Lines was released, Massive Attack was actually considered “chill-out music”.

The 2026 Massive Attack live experience is about as far removed from “chill” as you can get.

A collective formed in Bristol, England in 1988 that now consists of two constant members Robert “3D” Del Naja and Grant “Daddy G” Marshall, the group don’t want you to simply engage with the music, but also a pulverising visual experience that throws everything from hypnotic rows of LED digits to vapid social influencers to horrific war statistics at you in rapid succession. It’s a lot.

Despite it being 16 years since their last album, Massive Attack's reputation as one of electronic music's most respected and influential names is untarnished.

The deeply innovative, evocative British trailblazers emerged in 1988 out of Bristol collective The Wild Bunch and helped pioneer an atmospheric, cross-bred sound that would be dubbed "trip hop".

Though they never embraced the label, Massive Attack's cinematic splicing of brooding ambience, hypnotic dub grooves, subtler, soulful vocals and hip hop's omnivorous sampling was a refreshing alternative to popular 90s trends like Britpop, big beat and UK hip hop.

Israeli settlers attack journalists, including CNN, on the anniversary of deadly West Bank beating

Four settlers were arrested after an attack on CNN and other journalists in the occupied West Bank on Saturday, according to Israeli Police.

The journalists were near the village of Sinjil north of Ramallah to cover the one-year anniversary of the killing of Saif Musallet, a Palestinian-American who was beaten to death by Jewish settlers, last July.

Within minutes of arriving at the location where Musallet was killed, Israeli settlers descended on the area. As the CNN team and other journalists tried to leave, a group of four settlers blocked the road with their car and tried to keep the vehicles from moving forward.

The family of Sydney mother Leah Stewart, who was mauled by a shark last weekend, says she has required the amputation of her arm, with more surgeries scheduled for coming days.

Ms Stewart was bitten while swimming between the flags at Coogee Beach just before 11am on Saturday.

The 35-year-old was taken to St Vincent's Hospital where she remains in a critical condition.

Her family said she sustained "life-threatening" injuries including multiple bites across her arms and legs, lacerations and fractures throughout her body and extreme blood loss.

‘Seismic effect’: How surfers are shifting habits after Coogee shark attack

Veteran surfer Nick Carroll is not one to change his habits following shark attacks after more than 50 years spent chasing waves at Sydney’s beaches.

But the 66-year-old has watched many surfers and swimmers shift their routines in response to a surge in shark encounters: elderly ocean swimmers hugging the shoreline, nervous parents telling their children not to surf for weeks, or experienced board riders becoming extra vigilant when entering the water.

The mauling of 35-year-old swimmer Leah Stewart by a great white shark at Coogee Beach on Saturday has reignited debate about ocean safety measures and prompted many Sydneysiders to rethink their swims and surfs. Some remain unfazed, many take extra precautions and others avoid the water altogether.

A woman is in hospital in a critical condition after being bitten by a shark at Sydney’s Coogee beach, one of Australia’s most popular swimming spots.

The incident follows a series of shark attacks in New South Wales over the summer, prompting concern among beachgoers and renewed debate about how authorities should respond.

On Sunday, the NSW agriculture minister, Tara Moriarty, said the government was taking the situation “very, very seriously” and that “nothing is off the table” as it considers its next steps.

VfB ultras attack FCB fans! A fan brawl erupted before the southern derby between Stuttgart and Bayern, leaving two police officers injured

Ahead of the southern derby between FC Bayern and VfB Stuttgart, ugly scenes unfolded outside Munich’s Allianz Arena.

According to a Bild newspaper report, fan groups clashed outside the stadium of the German record champions roughly two hours before kick-off (5:30 pm).

Stuttgart ultras allegedly ambushed Munich ultras at their designated meeting point on Südkurvenplatz, sparking immediate confrontations. FCB supporters responded in kind: several hundred fans, some masked, charged the attackers. The situation quickly escalated into violent clashes.

Several hundred police officers deployed to contain the violence; two were injured while trying to cordon off the VfB ultras. Order was eventually restored, and around 150 Stuttgart supporters were arrested. According to Bild, some had travelled to Munich solely to participate in the disturbances.

VfB Stuttgart's Jamie Leweling: 'You have to be brave in Munich – but not reckless'

As VfB Stuttgart prepare for a defining run-in that includes a heavyweight clash with Bayern Munich and a high-stakes DFB Cup semi-final derby against Freiburg, winger Jamie Leweling sat down to discuss facing the champions, learning from the best, and why big occasions bring out the best in his side.

Bundesliga: A southern classic against Bayern Munich looms. What lessons did you learn in the reverse fixture, and how can you hurt them?

“I’d put it like this – even in the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup we held our own well. In the end Bayern showed the quality they have. You could see it in the first Bundesliga game this season [when Stuttgart lost 5-0] as well. We have to play like we did in the first half. We have to really stand up to them and somehow try to stop their individual quality. I think we can manage that. Of course, it’s going to be very difficult.”

Bayern Munich boss Vincent Kompany expecting big battle vs. VfB Stuttgart

FC Bayern vs. VfB Stuttgart could be a tough test for the Bavarians.

Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany knows the importance of winning the Bundesliga, but if everything breaks right and the team is able to clinch on Sunday, the head coach will not to be too fixated too much on it just yet.

“The title only matters at the end of the season. We’re playing against one of our toughest opponents. Looking at the recent matches, they’ve always been very close. I expect a physical game. Stuttgart are not only technically gifted but also physically very strong. They can also be dangerous with long balls. They have the second-best attack. It’s also a good game for the fans; there will be a great atmosphere,” said Kompany (as captured by @iMiaSanMia).
