Oscar Piastri must push back against McLaren team orders in 2026, says F1 great Damon Hill

Oscar Piastri must adopt a more selfish and assertive mindset in his return to McLaren for the 2026 F1 season, says former F1 champion Damon Hill.

With less than a month before testing in Barcelona, questions linger over the Australian's place at McLaren, since Lando Norris took out the F1 title.

Norris did not win the most races or lead the championship longest, with Max Verstappen taking eight wins – including the last three of the campaign – to the McLaren drivers' seven apiece.

Max Verstappen delivers ‘sell your soul’ verdict on Oscar Piastri tolerance to McLaren orders

Max Verstappen has warned Oscar Piastri of the dangers of complying with F1 team orders

Max Verstappen has warned Oscar Piastri that “you sell your soul” if you give in to team orders without a clear reason, referencing his supposed tolerance to McLaren intructions last year.

The Australian was 34 points ahead in the Drivers’ Championship after the resumption of the summer break, before notable incidents curbed his progress.

At Monza, Piastri was instructed to hand back second place to team-mate Lando Norris, after inheriting via the Brit’s botched tyre stop.

Other moments, such as his Turn 1 brush with Norris in Singapore and the infamous strategic blunder in Qatar ultimately contributed to Piastri losing the title, finishing behind both Norris and Verstappen.

F1 icon: Why Piastri has the edge over Norris in 2026

Former F1 driver Damon Hill has urged Oscar Piastri to return to the paddock a more selfish driver for 2026.

With less than a month before the new cars have their first outing in Barcelona for testing, the Australian is being advised to consider a mind set shift following the bitter ending to his 2025 campaign.

Piastri, who led the F1 title race by 34 points at the start of September, finished the season third behind teammate Lando Norris and Max Verstappen after a slump in form through October and November.

Disaster in Baku together with the controversial position swap at Monza and double disqualification in Las Vegas contributed to the collapse of his season which ultimately cost him the championship.

Watkins continued his impressive form with his fourth strike in three games over the festive period to spearhead an 11th-straight home win for Villa — their best victory sequence at Villa Park since 1990.

Ange Postecoglou back in contention at crisis club as odds revealed for his next job

Ange Postecoglou is a man who is still seemingly in demand as he seeks a return to management.

Athens-born Postecoglou led Tottenham to Europa League glory in May but was sacked by Daniel Levy just a month later after Spurs toiled to a 17th-placed finish.

Postecoglou was then embarrassingly sacked by Nottingham Forest after just 39 days in charge, and he has been out of work since.

With 2025 being a decidedly mixed year for the Australian, Postecoglou has yet to indicate when he will be looking to throw himself back into the public eye.

But it seems as though he could still be in the thoughts of a club desperately looking to get themselves out of a crisis in the coming weeks.

What Ange Postecoglou has said about returning as Celtic manager

It is safe to say that the majority of the Celtic fanbase wants the club to show Wilfried Nancy the exit door. The Frenchman has lost five out of the seven games since taking charge of the Hoops. But it looks like the board is ready to stick with their choice for the time being, rather than changing direction and admitting their mistake.

At some point, common sense will need to prevail though. If Nancy ends up guiding Celtic to defeat at the hands of the Rangers in the Glasgow Derby this weekend at Parkhead, there might very well be no way back for him, no matter how much they want to see the Frenchman succeed.

KUHNEMANN BACK FOR HEAT | Joins Squad For Scorchers

The Brisbane Heat will welcome the return of Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann for tomorrow's hotly anticipated KFC Big Bash League home game against the Perth Scorchers at the Gabba.

Kuhnemann was cleared today to make his return after missing the Heat’s opening game on Monday as he recovered from a side strain.

His inclusion will see fellow left-arm spinner Paddy Dooley drop out of the squad. Dooley was a Local Replacement Player in Monday’s exciting final over loss to the Melbourne Renegades at Geelong.

The Heat has also called in Toombul pace bowler Tom Balkin to their 14-player squad.

Big Bash League: Jhye Richardson’s return locked in as Perth Scorchers bat first against Brisbane Heat

Jhye Richardson’s Perth Scorchers return has been locked in, with the speedster coming into the side for their clash with Brisbane Heat at the Gabba.

After being unavailable for the Scorchers’ season-opening win over Sydney Sixers in Perth on Sunday as he joined Australia’s Test side for their preparations ahead of the third Test of The Ashes in Adelaide, Richardson linked up with his teammates in Queensland on Wednesday.

He replaces another fast bowler in Mahli Beardman, whose two overs in Perth’s first game were taken for 28 runs, in Perth’s sole change.

The Heat won the toss and chose to bowl first, leaving Perth’s power-packed batting line-up with the task of putting a big total on the scoreboard.

Smart (back) hopes to play in Lakers' Cup game

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. — Los Angeles Lakers guard Marcus Smart was cleared to practice Tuesday after being sidelined with a back issue for the past two weeks, giving L.A. a defensive boost heading into Wednesday's NBA Cup quarterfinals matchup with the San Antonio Spurs.

"Back's feeling good," Smart said. "Felt good in practice today. So we did some tests, passed the tests. We're going to give it a shot tomorrow. See how it feels."

Smart, 31, missed the Lakers' last six games with what the team termed a left lumbar muscle strain.

Lakers Announce Major Marcus Smart Injury Update Ahead of NBA Cup Quarterfinals

The Los Angeles Lakers have received a major injury update on three-time All-Defensive Team guard Marcus Smart, a key offseason signing who has been out for the last six contests with a back lingering.

The 31-year-old has been available for 14 contests with the 17-6 Lakers so far, during his inaugural season with the franchise. When the Oklahoma State product has suited up, he's been an effective defensive presence.

Former Celtics guard nearing return with new team

The Lakers could be getting a boost to their lineup for the NBA Cup on Wednesday night with Marcus Smart approaching a return. The former Celtics guard has missed the past six games due to a back injury, including a game in Boston on Friday night.

“Over the last couple days, he’s [gotten] closer,” JJ Redick told reporters earlier this week. “We were hoping he’s back Wednesday, but still day-to-day.”

The Lakers fell to the Celtics 126-105 at TD Garden without Smart, Luka Doncic and LeBron James in the lineup. Before the setback, Redick spoke about the impact that Smart has been making both on the floor and on the bench this year.

The signs are promising that Marnus Labuschagne has announced himself as a mainstay of the Australian top order once again, as he cemented his reputation as the world’s most formidable batsman against the pink ball.

But the Queenslander’s hunt for an elusive century remains, in what will be the greatest indicator of whether the Labuschagne of old is truly back.

Marnus Labuschagne saves hosts from penalty as Aussies punish England after 'costly' mistake

England have already let themselves down in the field in the opening session of Australia's innings after Marnus Labuschagne helped save the hosts from an ICC penalty after a moment of magic. Australia were searching for a quick wicket to start day two of the second Ashes Test after their slow over-rate saw them complete 74 overs on day one in Brisbane.

Australia were facing fines and the prospect of being docked a point in the World Test Championship for every over they're short of the minimum. The penalties only apply if the opposition team bats at least 80 overs in their innings – and this was Australia's saving grace after some magic from Brendan Doggett and Labuschagne.
