A look back at five Crows debuts that shaped the Club

In Round One, 1996, five debutants took the field for the Crows, kicking off careers that would shape the club’s history.

Thirty years ago, five new Crows started a journey to surprising success.

Five recruits with assorted football experiences shared their debuts for Adelaide in Round One of 1996 but would later share triumphs of greater significance.

Darren Jarman, Kym Koster, Troy Bond, Peter Caven and Shane Ellen – all added to the squad after a disappointing 1995 season under coach Robert Shaw – played in a stirring 90-point win against Sydney at Football Park, on the last day of March.

Remarkably, the five featured on the last day of September the following year, when Adelaide won its first AFL premiership at the MCG.

Crows tight-lipped on Daicos plans, ponder ruck change

Matthew Nicks was keeping mum on ways Adelaide will try quell the influence of gun Magpie

ADELAIDE coach Matthew Nicks is keeping his cards close to his chest as he prepares to dull the influence of a red-hot Nick Daicos in Saturday night's clash with Collingwood.

The Magpies superstar dismantled St Kilda with 41 disposals, seven marks and four clearances at the weekend, and will again be a pivotal figure as last year's minor premiers open their 2026 campaign.

Nicks said the Crows had enormous respect for Daicos but remained coy on what plans he would employ to keep the three-time All-Australian under wraps.

Team Tips: Dashing defender Adam Saad is expected to miss Carlton’s annual blockbuster against Richmond with a low-end hamstring strain, after finishing with just 64 per cent game time in his side’s Opening Round loss to Sydney. While not a like-for-like replacement, his absence could be somewhat negated by the return of Nick Haynes from an ankle injury, though he for now remains an outside chance to come straight back. The in-form Francis Evans (knee) is similarly considered unlikely, but not improbable to be parachuted into the starting 23. The trio of Blake Acres, Lachie Cowan and Matthew Carroll all successfully got through the club’s VFL practice match against Footscray late last week, with the side kicking a wayward 6.22 to ultimately go down by 21 points. It would be stiff to be dropped after just one match, but like most clubs early in the season, it will be intriguing to see if Michael Voss continues to deploy a two-ruck strategy with Liam Reidy as support to Marc Pittonet.

Formula 1 boss hits back at Verstappen, Hamilton over rule criticism

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

Aston Martin warns engine vibrations could risk permanent nerve damage for Fernando Alonso and Lance Stroll and reveals they may not finish opening Australian Grand Prix. (5:05)

Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali has hit back at drivers criticizing the sport's new regulations, saying it is "wrong" for the likes of Max Verstappen and Lewis Hamilton to speak negatively about F1.

This weekend's Australian Grand Prix will mark the start of a new era of F1, which has been heralded as the biggest rule change in the sport's 76-year history.

Five things Max Verstappen hates about the new F1 cars

Max Verstappen is rarely short of an unvarnished opinion, but even by his standards he’s been shockingly blunt about the all-new 2026 Formula 1 cars. In short, he hates them.

With a new powertrain that relies more on electric energy, narrower tyres, more complex aerodynamic rules and a requirement for the driver to carefully manage energy deployment, the cars are a long way from the sort of pure racing Verstappen adores.

It could still be an intriguing season for spectators, but for Max? Well, here are five things he’s not so thrilled about:

This is the key complaint. The 2026 F1 car requires careful energy management, with the driver having to “harvest” a lot more electrical energy under braking to feed the new vehicles’ larger batteries.

Bottas bucks driver criticism of new F1 rules

While world champion Max Verstappen has famously described the new generation as Formula E on steroids, Bottas says he actually enjoys driving them.

I like that the cars are smaller and lighter than before, the Cadillac driver told Iltalehti.

You can tell when you're driving. The car doesn't feel as big, clumsy and heavy as it used to.

The 36-year-old Finn admitted the behaviour of the cars has changed significantly.

The difference from before is significant, he said. The drivability of the engine, how it behaves, and how you have to play with the batteries in the corners and on the straights require a very different driving style.

The ACT Brumbies have given fans a lot to be pumped about to start the season, but Wallabies rising star Charlie Cale might just top the list.

One veteran has been blown away by the 25-year-old back-rower's four-try start to the year for the Brumbies, especially after a devastating, injury-hit 2025, and believes Cale should be firmly on the Wallabies radar ahead of the World Cup next year.

There he was, listed as “unavailable for selection” alongside Tom Wright, Tate McDermott, Noah Lolesio, Tom Lynagh and Langi Gleeson when the Wallabies announced their squad for the end-of-season tour last October.

Lakers Announce Bronny James News Amid Roster Shakeup

Over the past few days, the Los Angeles Lakers have experienced a notable roster shuffle, driven by a mix of deliberate decisions and unavoidable circumstances.

At the trade deadline, Los Angeles added Luke Kennard to address its long-standing need for perimeter shooting.

With an open roster spot still available, the expectation was that the Lakers would turn to the buyout market, where names such as Lonzo Ball, Cam Thomas, and Haywood Highsmith were widely viewed as logical fits.

Instead, general manager Rob Pelinka took an unexpected route. Rather than chasing a veteran addition, the Lakers promoted from within, signing G League standout Kobe Bufkin to a two-year contract.

Woolworths permanently brings back sold out $10 item after 'hugely successful' limited run: 'We've listened'

Woolworths has listened to shopper demand and is making the sold out $10 Cinnabon Cake a permanent part of its bakery offering. The delicious cake landed in supermarkets last year as a limited-time offering and they flew off the shelves.

Woolies said some stores saw the cake sell out within hours of stock arrive, and 55,000 were bought in just five days. Donald Keith, Woolworths Bakery Merchandise Manager, said it's clear shoppers want to have this item return for good.

"Customers have been asking about the Cinnabon Cake's return since the moment it left our shelves last year," he said.

"The overwhelming feedback made it clear that a limited run wasn't enough.

    Woolworths’ Cinnabon Cake returns

Woolworths is bringing back the viral Cinnabon Cake, and this time it’s here to stay.

Returning to shelves from 22 February, the cake will move from its previous limited-edition status to become a permanent member of the Woolworths bakery lineup all-year-round.

According to the retailer, the move follows a hugely successful limited run last year, which saw more than 55,000 cakes sold in just five days. The demand was so significant that many stores sold out within hours of stock arriving.

“Customers have been asking about the Cinnabon Cake’s return since the moment it left our shelves last year,” says Woolworths Bakery Merchandise Manager Donald Keith.

Todd Murphy also back in action as Victoria host Queensland with Usman Khawaja expected to play ensuing Shield contest

Ashes heroes Marnus Labuschagne and Michael Neser will be the star attractions when the men's domestic one-day season resumes at the MCG on Tuesday.

Todd Murphy will bolster Victoria's bowling attack in the absence of Scott Boland as the bottom-placed One-Day Cup outfit welcomes Queensland for a day match at the MCG.

It's a precursor to Thursday's Sheffield Shield contest between that competition's two top sides at the same venue with retired Test batter Usman Khawaja expected to feature.

With Boland set to sit out both matches having played all five Tests against England, Murphy will be the Vics' major weapon with the ball as they look to contain Bulls captain Labuschagne.

The Queensland Bulls will look to tap into their rising white ball talent pool as they resume their 2025-26 season tomorrow against Victoria in the One Day Cup competition.

With Matt Renshaw and Xavier Bartlett away on international T20 duties in Pakistan, Brisbane Heat stands-outs Max Bryant and Michael Neser come into the 13-man squad.

Bryant would play his first match of the season for the Bulls if chosen in the starting side.

Young pace bowers Tom Balkin and Oli Patterson have been named in the Queensland squad for the first time after the duo made eye-catching debuts for the Heat during the KFC Big Bash League.
