Australian dollar, bond yields fall after jobs data disappoints

The Australian sharemarket snapped a six-day losing run amid a flurry of full-year earnings results and relief in the bond market after the US Treasury revealed buyback plans to help ease multi-decade high borrowing costs.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index gained 30 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 9083.80 on Thursday, despite seven out of the 11 sectors trading in the red. Gains in mining and rate-sensitive technology stocks, as well as an extended rally in the healthcare sector, helped offset losses in the banking sector.

“The ASX 200 snapped its losing streak, supported by gains on Wall Street and a more positive mix of earnings updates,” said IG market analyst Tony Sycamore. “The rejuvenated healthcare sector also continues to attract money on the back of cheaper valuations after last year’s heavy falls.”

ASX finishes higher after jobs data, led by gold miners and tech stocks

The Australian sharemarket ticked higher in Thursday’s session, tracking a recovery on Wall Street as pressure from the bond market eased after the US Treasury unveiled plans to buy back longer-dated debt to curb borrowing costs.

The S&P/ASX 200 finished up 30 points, or 0.3 per cent, at 9083.80, having fallen for six straight sessions. Five of its 11 industry sectors were stronger, led by gold miners, healthcare and tech stocks. The Australian dollar slipped to US71.21¢.

It was another busy reporting season day, with Fortescue and Northern Star among companies revealing results. Investor focus was also on the latest labour market data. The ASX stayed in the green after a report showed the nation’s unemployment rate unexpectedly rose in July, easing some economists’ expectations for more interest rate hikes by the Reserve Bank.

This show is like James Bond, except it’s a comedy set in New Zealand

Rose Matafeo, Joe Thomas and Paul Williams star as three hapless spies, guided by their boss, Bret McKenzie. (Supplied: ABC TV)

As a young boy growing up in Nelson, Aotearoa/New Zealand, he would rent out a different James Bond film every week from the video shop. And the obsession didn't end with childhood.

"It's weird I even remember it, but when I was 16, I had this blog that no-one followed, and I remember writing: 'I'm going to be James Bond one day, just you wait'," Williams laughs.

He's the creator, writer and star of new comedy TV series, New Zealand Spy.

Bond, James Bond? Not quite, but this Kiwi comedy is a delightfully dry spin on spy thrillers

Lovers of endearingly mild-mannered New Zealanders being polite, careful and deadpan in risky, high-stakes circumstances, rejoice. New Zealand Spy is a six-part comedy series from New Zealand comedian, writer and musician Paul Williams (Taskmaster NZ), whose love of James Bond and Alfred Hitchcock films has engendered a deeply dry-witted retake on classic spy films.

Kicking off with the panache and adventure of any Bond movie, we meet Williams’ spy protagonist, Michael Brown (spy name: Michael Riviera), piste skiing in a pearly white snowsuit down a vast Queenstown slope chased by an Australian spy agency guard.

Brown is eventually trapped and his identity requested at gunpoint. Does he answer “Riviera, Michael Riviera”? No. What follows is an awkward silence as he tries to remember his undercover alias. A squabble ensues, the guard is perplexed and infuriated but we flash back to how Riviera became a spy a few weeks previously.

James Bond 26’s Theatrical Future Gets Good & Bad News

James Bond 26 officially has a good news update. The confirmation comes alongside sobering news about development progress. Amazon MGM Studios has finally offered some clarity on where things stand with 007, and it’s a classic case of good news wrapped in a waiting game.

Mike Hopkins, the man running Amazon MGM Studios’ operation, sat down with Variety and tackled the elephant in the room head-on. Ever since Amazon took over MGM in that massive deal a few years back, James Bond fans have worried their beloved spy might get only a Prime Video exclusive. But Hopkins shut that rumor down.

James Bond studio heads urge patience over casting announcement

Executives from Amazon MGM are no closer to revealing who is lined up for the coveted role, saying, ‘We’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect’

The new James Bond studio heads have attempted to calm fans about who will play the British spy in the new film.

Speaking at trade show CinemaCon in the US on Wednesday, executives from Amazon MGM studios – which bought the series rights as part of an $8.45bn (£6.9bn) deal in 2022 – indicated that an abundance of caution on their part meant the role was not yet cast.

“I know you’re all wondering when we’re going to announce who’s playing James Bond,” said Courtenay Valenti, Amazon MGM’s head of film. “Don’t get too excited. Please know that we’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”

Amazon film boss addresses five-year wait for new James Bond: ‘That film is coming’

James Bond fans have been given a long-awaited update on the franchise – but we’re still in the dark as to who will be the next 007.

Having initially been slated for release in April 2020, No Time To Die was delayed by the pandemic and Daniel Craig’s final outing as Bond eventually arrived in cinemas in October 2021.

With speculation rife over who would be stepping into his shoes, Amazon made a controversial purchase of MGM Studios in January last year, taking control of the much-loved franchise.

Amazon MGM Studios’ head of film Courtenay Valenti has now offered an update on what’s going on behind the scenes, telling attendees at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday: “Now, I know you’re all wondering when we’re going to announce who’s playing James Bond.

James Bond Casting Process Teased by Amazon MGM: “A Responsibility We Don’t Take Lightly”

"Please know that we’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect," film boss Courtenay Valenti told the audience at CinemaCon.

There might be no time to die, but there is time to find the perfect James Bond.

During Amazon MGM Studios‘ presentation at CinemaCon in Las Vegas on Wednesday, the studio’s head of film Courtenay Valenti gave a hint into the casting process for the forthcoming installment in the beloved spy franchise from director Denis Villeneuve.

“Now, I know you’re all wondering when we’re going to announce who’s playing James Bond,” the exec told the crowd. “Please know that we’re taking the time to do this with care and deep respect. It is the dream of a lifetime for all of us to bring audiences this next chapter, and it’s a responsibility we don’t take lightly.”

James Bond game 007 First Light delayed to May 2026

The upcoming James Bond game 007 First Light has been delayed until 27 May 2026.

The much-anticipated title was due to be released on 27 March, but will now come out two months later.

It will be the first video game featuring the British spy since 2012's 007 Legends.

In a statement developer IO Interactive, which also makes the Hitman series, said the game was "fully playable from beginning to end" – but extra time was needed to "further polish" it.

It is being developed in association with Delphi Interactive, which is also behind the upcoming Fifa game due to be released on Netflix ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

IO Interactive says 'old school Bond' would be 'tone deaf' today as 007 First Light moves the character towards more 'modern values'

007 First Light developer IO Interactive has said that their version of James Bond won’t be anything like the “old school” spy of the 1960s, a decision the studio claimed would would be “tone deaf” today.

007 First Light, the next game from the Swedish studio is now primed to launch in May 2026 after a short delay. Releasing before Hitman 4, which the studio has promised will happen, the upcoming stealth-action game is a more modern take on the iconic British spy.

Speaking to Monstervine, cinematics director Martin Emborg revealed that while there will be elements of the smooth-talking Bond many have come to expect from the franchise, he’ll be a “modern guy” and will reflect “modern values”.

Steven Spielberg’s incredible James Bond Easter Egg in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade

Back in 1989, Harrison Ford returned as his archaeologist adventurer for a third time in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, which is on Channel 4 this afternoon.

This time around, he’d be joined by original James Bond star Sean Connery as the lead’s father.

This was a perfect fit given that George Lucas and Steven Spielberg had created Indiana Jones as a character to rival 007 when the latter director had originally wanted to shoot a Bond movie.

Yet Connery wasn’t the only 007 alumnus in the Last Crusade, as the movie also co-starred A View To A Kill Bond girl Alison Doody as Dr Elsa Schneider and For Your Eyes Only Bond villain Julian Glover as baddie Walter Donovan.
