I’m sceptical of remakes, but this new version of Cape Fear is incredible – and terrifying

I’m always sceptical of a TV series that stretches out a film-length story to 10 episodes, but this new adaptation of John D. MacDonald’s 1957 novel The Executioners – which was first made into a 1962 film starring Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck, and again in 1991 starring Nick Nolte and Robert De Niro – is a slick, clever update of the original.

With Martin Scorsese (who directed the 1991 film) and Steven Spielberg as executive directors, it’s no surprise this is a big-budget affair, and it looks incredible.

Once again set in Georgia, there are two attorneys who now are the target of the newly released con Max Cady. Anna Bowden (Amy Adams, most recently seen in Nightbitch) and her husband Tom (Fargo’s Patrick Wilson) were Cady’s respective defence lawyer and prosecutor. They met during Cady’s trial 17 years earlier for the murder of his wife and unborn child. (The icky rapist themes of the ’91 version have been changed.)

Cape Fear review – Amy Adams and Javier Bardem’s immaculate update is a wild, wild ride

Bardem has the absolute time of his life terrifying everyone in this remake of the classic thriller. It’s a masterclass in tension, sublime directing – and never forgets the power of a jump scare

“Ever look around and wonder if we deserve all this?” a woman asks, standing by their sprawling mansion’s swimming pool with her handsome, ripped, fellow lawyer husband.

Ah me. Ah my. Welcome to the latest screen incarnation of John D MacDonald’s taut psychological thriller, published in 1957 as The Executioners and now adapted for the third time under the title Cape Fear. Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck starred in the first, in 1962 – the former as the villain Max Cady, nursing an incandescent rage and obsessive desire for vengeance against the latter, as lawyer Sam Bowden, for for his role as key witness in a rape prosecution. Martin Scorsese directed a remake that had Nick Nolte as Bowden and a truly terrifying Robert De Niro as Cady in 1991. It introduced a few more moral grey areas but the battle remained between good and very, very evil as Cady sought to destroy Bowden’s life and family in every conceivable way.

I’m an academic, but I’ve told my stepdaughter to think twice about going to university

My stepdaughter is in her final year of high school and I am an academic, yet I’ve recently advised her to think twice before enrolling in university.

Why? Because right now kids are taking on tens of thousands of dollars in debt to have a terrible campus experience while being graded on who can write the best AI prompts.

In the three years since ChatGPT was released we have arrived at a point in which all of Australia’s universities are committing widespread, industrial-scale fraud. The students who began their studies back then are now graduating and entering the workforce, and we’ll soon begin to see the results of a real-time experiment in degree by GPT.

'I know you are busy': Students apologetic, 'short-changed' as university class sizes explode

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

Students are cramming into university tutorials and labs as overworked academics confront a class size "crisis".

A national survey of 4,421 university staff conducted in early 2025 by the National Tertiary Education Union found class sizes have skyrocketed since the COVID-19 pandemic.

The major report, released on Wednesday, showed three out of five university staff surveyed (62 per cent) reported tutorial and lab sizes had grown since 2019, with 35 per cent describing the change as significant.

Staff indicated the share of tutorials with 30 or more students had doubled from 27 per cent to 54 per cent.

‘Students are paying the price’: More than half of uni tutorials at least double the ideal size

Tutorials have exploded to more than double the ideal size, student support has collapsed and class engagement has worsened significantly as Australia edges towards $100,000 degrees and universities suffer a crisis of public confidence.

This is the scathing conclusion of a landmark national survey of more than 4000 staff members by the National Tertiary Education Union which compared 2019 tutorials and lectures to now. That year was the last before COVID-19 disruptions and the much-maligned Job Ready Graduates scheme was introduced.

The outlook is bleak. The survey found that 62 per cent of staff reported tutorial size had increased in that period. While research shows the ideal size for a tutorial is 10-19 students, more than half of today’s tutorials host 30 or more students.

Ford Bronco coming to Australia, but not the one you expected

Ford Australia's first model from China will be an electrified member of the Bronco family, but it's not a rugged, body-on-frame off-roader.

The Ford Bronco is finally coming to Australia, but it won’t be the hardcore off-roader many have been waiting for.

Instead of the US-built Bronco based on the Australian-developed T6 ladder-frame platform, this market is set to receive the Chinese-built Bronco New Energy – an extended-range electric SUV with a big battery, a long claimed driving range, and what could be very sharp pricing.

CarExpert understands the Bronco New Energy is due to arrive in Australia either late this year or early in 2027, with pricing expected to start from around $48,000 and stretch to just under $60,000.

Ford Bronco Is Closing In On Jeep Wrangler Sales

For decades, the Jeep Wrangler has been the undisputed king of off-road SUVs. It’s built a reputation that goes beyond specs and sales numbers, becoming a cultural icon in the process. Now, for the first time in a long while, that dominance is being seriously challenged.

Enter the Ford Bronco. When it returned in 2021, it was a direct shot at Jeep’s crown, and unlike previous attempts, this one actually has the numbers to back it up.

The gap between the two is shrinking fast. While the Wrangler still leads overall, Ford is starting to win key battles month by month. What used to be a one-sided fight is turning into one of the most interesting rivalries in the automotive industry right now.

Spotify stock plummets after earnings beat expectations as guidance disappoints

Shares of Swedish audio-streamer Spotify fell over 13% after the market opened Tuesday, as soft guidance overshadowed an earnings beat.

The company said first-quarter revenue rose 8% from last year to 4.5 billion euros ($5.3 billion), while monthly active users (MAUs) rose 12% year-on-year to 761 million, both slightly above FactSet estimates.

Premium subscribers grew 9% to 293 million, reflecting 3 million quarterly net adds, Spotify said.

For the current quarter, Spotify expects to add 17 million net users to reach 778 million MAUs. It expects to grow its premium subscribers by 6 million to 299 million.

While second-quarter MAU guidance was slightly above Wall Street's expectations, net premium subscribers had been expected to grow to just over 300.4 million, according to analysts polled by FactSet.

Spooners to 2-0… but Knights rocked by $2.7m double injury blow in ‘insipid’ Manly thrashing

The Knights may be 2-0 after a thumping win over Manly, but it’s hard for their fans to celebrate too hard given they will be without $2.7m of their salary cap next week with superstars Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown both going off injured.

The 36-16 victory at 4 Pines Park continued Justin Holbrook’s dream start at the helm after they claimed the wooden spoon last season, but the coach will be praying for a positive result after his two best players suffered leg injuries.

The Newcastle Knights are counting the cost of a 36-16 win over Manly after superstars Kalyn Ponga and Dylan Brown both missed the entire second half at Brookvale Oval with injuries.

Ponga was cut down by a hamstring injury while scoring a 90-metre team try and tried to play on before succumbing, while halfback Dylan Brown suffered a left knee injury while setting up a try for Ponga's replacement, Fletcher Hunt, just before half-time.

"It's not ideal two playmakers going down, but the boys did the job for us massive," Ponga said.

Justin Holbrook loses another star Dylan Brown to knee injury

The injury toll for the Knightss continues to build up, as Dylan Brown suffered a MCL injury in the first half against the Manly Sea Eagles.

In the 25th minute, Ponga went down grabbing his right hamstring after scoring a try.

Dylan Brown was on the ground with the trainer shortly after, suffering an MCL injury while setting up Fletcher Hunt for a try.

He continued playing until the end of the first half, but the discomfort showed on Brown's face and the decision was called for him to leave the game.

The playmaker is most likely set to miss a month on the sidelines.

Swans soar but injuries may sour big win over Lions

A first-quarter blitz from Sydney set up a convincing result, handing Brisbane a 0-2 start to its premiership defence

SYDNEY continued on from its dominant Opening Round win with an early blitz that as good as closed Brisbane out of the contest on Saturday night, on the way to a 15.14 (104) to 8.12 (60) result at the SCG.

But the victory may come at a cost, with superstar duo Errol Gulden and Isaac Heeney nursing injuries as they both left the match early in the fourth quarter.

Sydney blew the game open in the first term, putting 40 points on the board in sensational fashion before Brisbane scored.

The Sydney Swans have defeated Brisbane by 44 points at the SCG after ruthlessly taking full advantage of the visitors’ weakened squad.

The Swans will face a nervous wait on the status of star midfielder Errol Gulden, who went down clutching his shoulder after a tackle in the fourth quarter and sat out the rest of the game wearing a sling. Isaac Heeney was also similarly removed from the game in the last term as a precaution with a tight hamstring.

MegaETH TVL Rises 65% in a Week, but TGE Conditions Remain Unmet

Ethereum Layer 2 MegaETH’s mainnet, which launched on Feb. 9 following a high‑profile stress test ahead of its debut, has seen total value locked climb to roughly $66.48 million as of today, Feb. 16. The total value on MegaETH represents a roughly 65% increase compared with TVL at the immediate post‑launch period, where it was around $40.3 million, data from DefiLlama shows.

Stablecoins account for the bulk of on‑chain balances, with the chain’s $99.2 million stablecoin market cap up 56% over the past week, while bridged asset TVL are about $122 million.

Decentralized crypto exchange Kumbaya is the largest app on MegaETH by value locked by a wide margin, with roughly $51 million in TVL, dwarfing other early entrants as users have parked capital in its liquidity pools since launch.

Transak Unlocks Instant Fiat Access to MegaETH’s 100K TPS Network

Transak expanded its payment infrastructure as it unlocked instant fiat access to MegaETH’s high-speed network, which processes 100,000 transactions per second. The integration now streamlines direct ETH purchases on MegaETH and removes several long standing onboarding barriers. The update positions Transak as a central gateway for rapid blockchain activity.

Transak activated full support for MegaETH and enabled users to acquire ETH directly on the chain without external steps. The company linked its global payment rails to the real-time Layer 2 network and created a unified flow. Transak ensured that the experience supports cards, wallets, and regional methods.

The integration allows more than 10 million users to enter MegaETH without bridging or exchange accounts. Transak also removed the need for prior crypto holdings and simplified the entire onboarding process. The update aligns with MegaETH’s objective to support internet-level speeds and consistent execution.

Tesla tops estimates for quarter, but wraps up first annual revenue drop on record

Tesla reported better-than-expected fourth-quarter results after the bell on Wednesday, but revenue for the year dropped 3%, the first time on record the company has recorded an annual decline. The stock rose 2% in extended trading.

Here's how the company did, compared with estimates from analysts polled by LSEG:

Auto sales have been sluggish in recent quarters for Tesla, as the company faces an onslaught of competition in various parts of the world, most notably from BYD in China.

Revenue in the fourth quarter slid 3% from $25.7 billion a year earlier, with the auto segment falling 11% to $17.7 billion from $19.8 billion.

Full-year revenue fell to $94.8 billion from $97.7 billion in 2024, the company said in an earnings release. The decline was caused, in part, by a "decrease in vehicle deliveries" and "lower regulatory credit revenue," Tesla said.

Tesla’s revenue and profit tumble to cap off rough 2025

Telsa’s revenue and profits tumbled in the fourth quarter, capping off the most difficult year for the electric automaker since it became profitable six years ago.

Tesla said Wednesday that its adjusted income fell 16% during the last three months of 2025. Its net income tumbled further, plunging 61% in the quarter and 46% for the year, or a $3.3 billion decline.

The drop didn’t come as a surprise – the company posted its biggest year-over-year sales volume drop ever in the fourth quarter. Tesla’s earning have fallen in nine of the last ten quarters. As of 2025, the company’s annual income is only 30% of the $12.6 billion it was in 2022, its peak earnings year.

‘I’d come back to the UK – but I’m not playing a cop’: Oscar-tipped Wunmi Mosaku on sensational vampire smash Sinners

She grew up on a Manchester council estate. Now she’s gone stratospheric for her pivotal role in Sinners. The star talks about leaving Britain for LA – and the £30 bus trip that changed her life

‘I do love a Greggs,” says Wunmi Mosaku, as she settles into a sofa in a hotel in London’s Holborn. She’s extolling the virtues of the high-street baker after I jokingly suggested that’s what she could have for lunch, now she’s back in the UK from her base in Los Angeles. Despite being Stateside for the best part of a decade, she has lost none of her Manchester twang or sense of humour.

How Wunmi Mosaku went from Manchester estate to Oscar nomination

As a young child, Wunmi Mosaku always had her sights set on a career in acting, inspired by her love of the 1980s musical Annie.

"I watched Annie every single day after school," said 39-year-old Mosaku during a recent interview on The Graham Norton Show.

"I said to my mum and sister 'I don't want to do maths and economics, I think I want to act'.

"They were like 'how do you do that' and I was like 'I don't know'."

To answer her mother's question, Mosaku decided to Google the cast of her favourite film in search of some much-needed insight into how to break it into the acting industry.

‘Sinners’ Stars Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo Save the Brits From Their First Oscars Shut-Out in 40 Years

Thanks to the pair, the U.K. is somewhat covered at the 98th Academy Awards — though it's been a decidedly weaker year for British talent.

Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo will be flying the flag for the usually well-performing Brits at this year’s Academy Awards.

The Sinners stars are the only U.K. natives to land acting Oscar nominations on Thursday, unveiled by Danielle Brooks and Lewis Pullman from the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Notably, Emily Blunt (The Smashing Machine) and Cynthia Erivo (Wicked: For Good) did not score nods.

Thanks to Mosaku and Lindo, the U.K. is somewhat covered at the 98th Academy Awards — though it’s been a decidedly weaker year for British talent. Had the duo not earned nods, it would have been the first time in 40 years that Britons failed to earn an acting Oscar nomination. This last occurred in 1986.
