Match Report: NSW Cup Round 25 vs Knights

Manly Warringah Sea Eagles have defeated the Newcastle Knights 40-12 in Round 25 of the Knock On Effect NSW Cup at McDonald Jones Stadium on Saturday.

After a tightly contested first half, Manly took control after the break, scoring six unanswered tries to secure a convincing 40-12 victory.

The impressive victory against the third-placed Knights, was the Sea Eagles’ first since the opening round of the season.

Manly opened the scoring in the third minute when fullback Tex Hoy powered through two defenders to score against his former club. Hoy was unable to convert, leaving Manly ahead 4-0.

The Knights hit back in the 13th minute when a series of offloads created space for back-rower Brodie Jones to crash over. Fullback Connor Votano converted to give Newcastle an 8-4 lead.

Battle of the axed: Childbirth and a hamstring injury force changes for Warriors, Panthers

The New Zealand Warriors and Penrith Panthers have both been forced into late changes for Friday night's enormous top-four clash in Auckland.

The Warriors have lost Te Maire Martin to a hamstring injury sustained at training this week, while Penrith will be without Jack Cogger who has remained in Australia as he prepares for the birth of his child.

Cogger will almost certainly only miss a single week before being available for selection again, while Martin could miss a couple of weeks even with a minor hamstring problem.

It's unclear how bad Martin's issue is at this stage, but he was spotted at training with ice on his hamstring.

Shock halves changes for Warriors AND Panthers ahead of Auckland blockbuster

He’s been an unused reserve five times and hasn’t seen NRL action since way back in Round 5.

But Luke Metcalf is set for just his third NRL appearance of 2026 when the Warriors host the Panthers on Friday night in Auckland following a late change in the Wahs’ Round 23 squad.

One of Andrew Webster’s most important players just a season ago, Metcalf has tumbled down the Warriors playmaking pecking order after a season-ending ACL injury in 2025 followed by the spectacular rise of back-up No.7 Tanah Boyd.

Even when Boyd suffered an ACL of his own in Round 11 this season, Metcalf was overlooked for 30-year-old Te Maire Martin who has partnered Chanel Harris-Tavita in the halves since Round 12.

Imesha Dulani’s maiden hundred chases down 177 as Sri Lanka go 1-0 up

Imesha Dulani became only the second Sri Lankan woman to score a T20I century, batting through the chase for an unbeaten 101 at Dambulla. Sri Lanka beat Pakistan by six wickets to go 1-0 up in the series.

Sri Lanka Women chased 177 at Dambulla on 31 July and lost only four wickets doing it, because the batter who walked out first was still there at the end. Imesha Dulani opened, faced 64 balls, hit 17 fours, and finished unbeaten on 101. Sri Lanka got home with six balls to spare and lead the three-match T20I series 1-0.

Chamari Athapaththu had been the only Sri Lankan woman with a T20I century to her name, and she has three of them. Dulani is now the second player from the country to get there, and this was her maiden T20I hundred. She reached fifty off 32 balls and moved to three figures off 63, which is as good a sign as any that the innings never stalled through the middle overs.

Defender returns for Thursday night footy

Jeremy Howe comes into the team to take on the Crows at Adelaide Oval.

Collingwood has made one change for Thursday night’s Round 20 clash with the Adelaide Crows at Adelaide Oval.

Experienced defender Jeremy Howe returns to the team after recovering from groin and hip soreness in the Pies’ Round 18 win over North Melbourne.

Howe will be a welcomed addition to the Pies defensive stocks who will have the tough task of manning a dangerous Adelaide forward-line featuring keys Taylor Walker, Riley Thilthorpe and Finnbar Maley.

After impressing in his five games since debuting in the Pies’ Round 15 win over Port Adelaide, young midfielder Sam Swadling has been omitted for the match.

Team update: Nicks confirms early Round 20 selection news

A key defender has been ruled out of our match against Collingwood.

Adelaide Senior Coach Matthew Nicks has ruled out key defender Mark Keane from the Crows’ Round 20 clash against Collingwood at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night.

Speaking to the media on Wednesday morning, Nicks said Keane would miss the game due to illness, with fellow backman Nick Murray set to be included in the team.

“You would’ve noticed Mark Keane wasn't out there (at Captain’s run),” Nicks said.

“It's been one that's just stuck around, so he's not going to play.

“Nick Murray will play for us, so that's straightforward. Muz has been in really strong form in the SANFL, so it’s disappointing for Mark, but reinforces the strength of the squad and how important it is.”

AFL makes call on experienced umpire after controversial Hawks-Blues decision

The AFL has made a call on umpire Matt Stevic after a controversial decision in the Hawks' win over the Blues

VETERAN field umpire Matt Stevic has been selected to officiate in round 19.

Stevic made a mistake when he awarded a 50m penalty against Carlton midfielder Adam Cerra on Saturday night after appearing to call play on.

Hawthorn forward Jack Ginnivan went from a tough shot outside 50 in the wet to a shot in the goalsquare in the first quarter, which he converted in the 64-point win at the MCG.

Stevic has come under scrutiny since then, but is one of the League's most experienced umpires and will umpire this weekend.

Is Hardwick serious? Because if what he says is right, his club is not

Decorated field umpire Matt Stevic made a mistake when he awarded a 50-metre penalty to Jack Ginnivan after calling “play on” on Saturday night at the MCG.

With more than 500 games’ experience and 12 grand finals, he can be forgiven for the howler. It’s a mistake, rather than the catalyst for a royal commission.

Everyone is sick of talking about officiating – but the issues can’t be ignored.

There have been too many rules changed on the run by a reactive administration this season.

The stand rule, the taunting rule, the lasso rule and the ARC have all been re-interpreted by head office mid-season and the umpires on the shop floor are the ones who have to deal with the fallout – and confusion – that has occurred since.

Supercars commentary call-up triggers more TV changes

Craill was selected by Supercars as its full-time play-by-play caller starting with this weekend’s NTI Townsville 500.

The South Australian had excelled during an early-season rotation of the role earlier this year following the axing of Neil Crompton.

Craill is well-known to motorsport fans due to decades of work across various classes and is synonymous with both the SpeedSeries and Porsche racing.

Supercars, however, does not want its main man calling supports or appearing on the SpeedSeries platform, requiring him to relinquish those roles.

Craill has attended all but a handful of SpeedSeries events since its inception in 2006 and will still appear at its upcoming rounds, helping out in an off-air capacity.

Race 21 starting grid: 2026 NTI Townsville 500

Ford rivals Brodie Kostecki and Matt Payne are set to go to war through Turn 1 on Saturday's NTI Townsville 500.

The Shell V-Power Racing Team star pipped championship leader Payne to Boost Mobile Pole by just 0.1s. Tickford Racing driver Thomas Randle was the surprise packet, qualifying third ahead of Toyota star Ryan Wood.

Further intrigue is centred on Will Brown and Broc Feeney, with the Red Bull Ampol Mustangs to start from 12th and 18th after another stumble.

Race 21 will commence at 3:05pm AEST. Seven, Fox Sports, Kayo Sports, Sky NZ take live coverage. International fans can watch on SuperView.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear requests update on Mitch McConnell's health

Washington — Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear formally requested an update from Sen. Mitch McConnell on Wednesday amid a weekslong hospitalization that has prompted growing speculation about his health.

"Over the last several weeks, Kentuckians have grown increasingly concerned about the current state of your health and wellbeing, and ability to hold office in the United States Senate," Beshear wrote in a letter to McConnell on Wednesday. "As Governor, I request that you fully update Kentuckians regarding the current status of your health."

McConnell, 84, has been hospitalized since June 14. Emergency medical personnel responded to an unconscious person at McConnell's home on the same day, according to a public EMS dispatch call reviewed by CBS News last week. Since then, McConnell's office has not provided more information about why he was admitted to the hospital, and has not confirmed that the dispatch call was about the senator.

Bombshell $1.2m call to turn Luai windfall into ‘romantic’ homecoming… and ‘unlock’ Tigers

The Wests Tigers sent shockwaves through the rugby league world earlier this week when they dropped a mid-season bombshell.

On Thursday afternoon, reports emerged from CODE Sports that the club had granted five-eighth and co-captain Jarome Luai permission to depart the as early as the end of this season.

“We’re all fine. Obviously its not ideal before a game but we’re all locked in and we won’t use that as an excuse tonight,” Adam Doueihi said on Fox League.

Luai was supposed to lead Tigers back to the finals. He’s leaving after 18 months. What went wrong?

When Jarome Luai flew to Port Moresby on a private jet and signed with the PNG Chiefs in April, the Wests Tigers took the loss of their $6 million star with good grace.

It was an opportunity “too good to refuse” for Luai, admitted Tigers coach Benji Marshall, who waived the 10-day cooling-off period and set about planning for the future while vowing the club would make the most of their co-captain for the 18 months they had left with him.

The team had at that point won five of their first seven games – three of the victories chalked up while Luai was absent with a knee injury – and were riding high on the NRL ladder.

Yankees call up No. 2 prospect to start Sunday's game vs. Reds

NEW YORK — The Yankees have shuffled their rotation, recalling right-hander Elmer Rodríguez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre to start Sunday in place of right-hander Gerrit Cole, who is now scheduled to pitch Monday at Detroit.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone announced the changes after Saturday’s 10-2 loss to the Reds, coming as the club navigates a schedule of 16 consecutive games. The club announced the move Sunday morning.

“It’s nothing other than this long stretch, just giving all our starters an extra day,” Boone said. “Everyone else will bounce back a day. It’s something we’ve been kicking around the last few days.”
