Call made for stoma-friendly public toilets in Belfast

A call has been made for more stoma-friendly public toilets in Belfast.

The Alliance Party has made a proposal at City Hall to look at ways to introduce toilets that have simple and practical facilities to help people living with stoma bags.

A stoma is a surgically created opening on the abdomen that allows waste, that is stool or urine, to exit the body, bypassing the normal route. It acts as a diversion for digestive or urinary systems when the body cannot pass waste through the anus or urethra, often due to cancer, diverticulitis, or Crohn's disease.

This shift reflects a broader growth in luggage storage demand, driven by more flexible travel habits and the need to make better use of time between arrivals and departures. What was once a niche convenience is becoming a more visible part of everyday travel, not only in major cities but also in smaller transport hubs such as Stockport.

In recent years, that change has begun to shape how people move through Greater Manchester. Services such as Stasher are part of this shift, linking travellers with local businesses that can securely store luggage for short periods.

Xi Jinping says Strait of Hormuz should be open in call with Saudi crown prince

Chinese leader says there must be an ‘immediate and comprehensive ceasefire’ and backs diplomatic solution to crisis

The Strait of Hormuz should remain open, Chinese President Xi Jinping said in a phone call with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman of Saudi Arabia on Monday, according to state broadcaster CCTV.

It was the first time the Chinese leader had called for the reopening of the strategically vital waterway, which has been repeatedly blockaded since US-Israeli strikes on Iran began on February 28.

“The Strait of Hormuz should remain open for normal passage, which aligns with the common interest of countries in the region and the international community,” Xi said in Monday’s call.

Xi Calls For Reopening Of Homruz And ‘Immediate Ceasefire’ In U.S.-Iran War

China’s President Xi Jinping on Monday called for an immediate ceasefire in the Iran War and said the Strait of Hormuz should be reopened for shipping traffic, in his first public remarks calling for the critical waterway to be opened just weeks before he is set to host President Donald Trump in Beijing.

Xi’s remarks were included in a readout of a call between him and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, released by Chinese State media.

Xi said the strait should “remain open for normal passage,” without singling out either Iran or the U.S. blockade.

The Chinese leader also added that his country wants an “immediate and comprehensive ceasefire” and is willing to support all diplomatic efforts to restore peace.

Australian shares edge lower as miners retreat, markets await Middle East talks

Why economists are saying the RBA won’t hike rates again

The market is underestimating a brewing economic downturn, the investment bank has warned.

The wrecking ball impact on the Australian economy from the Middle East conflict means the Reserve Bank will decline to lift rates again in 2026 before moving to an easing cycle next year, according to economists at Morgan Stanley.

On Tuesday the investment bank warned the market is underestimating a brewing economic downturn in Australia as house and equity prices fall.

While consumer confidence plunged to a 53-year low in March as evidence mounts that households are being swamped by higher interest rates and petrol prices.

'There's a chance of a recession,' warns Westpac boss

Anthony Miller thinks a recession could be on the way. (Supplied: Westpac)

The chief executive of Westpac has warned of the growing risk a recession could be on the horizon for Australia, given growing inflationary pressures and geopolitical tensions.

In an exclusive sit-down interview with the ABC's Alan Kohler for the second episode of his That's Business podcast, Westpac CEO Anthony Miller said "circumstances have changed" and Australia needs to be prepared.

"I think there's a chance of a recession. I think we need to acknowledge that," he said.

"It's much more complicated today because of events in the Middle East over the last few months than it would otherwise have been, so I think it puts more pressure on how [the Reserve Bank] can get us through this environment."

The bond market offers cheap bets the RBA will fail on inflation

The market’s prognosis on inflation in Australia is pretty grim, at least over the next 12 months.

Energy prices are rising from the Iran war, and living costs are crushing households who are bearing the brunt of higher interest rates. But beneath the headlines, an “interesting picture” is emerging, according to Westpac.

Newly installed Chelsea coach Liam Rosenior rejected the notion that Arsenal was "taking the game back in time" by focusing heavily on set plays under Mikel Arteta.

"I don't know who's calling them 'Set Piece FC' — I'm definitely not," Rosenior said Monday, two days out from the teams' first-leg meeting in the English League Cup semifinals at Stamford Bridge.

Arsenal lead the Premier League by six points, also tops the Champions League after six victories from six in the league phase, and is showing few weaknesses in its bid for a first trophy since winning the FA Cup in 2020 at the end of Arteta's first season in charge.

Strikers recruit answers the call in stunning BBL debut

A mid-season pick up has Adelaide fans in a spin after three-wicket haul in Perth.

South African spinner Tabraiz Shamsi has all the makings of the BBL's latest cult hero, and don't be surprised if thousands of fans end up taking off their shoes to answer his call.

Shamsi made a stunning BBL debut for the Adelaide Strikers on Sunday night, snaring 3-30 at Optus Stadium in his team's 33-run loss.

The 35-year-old wasn't meant to link up with the Strikers until January 7, but they rushed him in early with the hope Perth would struggle against his spin.

Shamsi dismissed Mitch Marsh and Cooper Connolly in his first over, before returning to send Ashton Turner packing – three of the Scorchers' most dangerous players.

The left-arm leggie was brought to Australia a game early as the Strikers attempted to knock off five-time champions Perth Scorchers with an all-out spin attack at Optus Stadium.

And while the men in blue fell short of victory, Shamsi’s Big Bash debut was a win for the club.

He claimed 3-30 from his four overs, including the vital scalps of Australian T20 captain Mitch Marsh, rising star Cooper Connolly and Scorchers skipper Ashton Turner.

Call the Midwife creator reveals why there won’t be the "traditional" Christmas special in 2026

"This is just a lovely opportunity for us to press pause…"

While it has already been confirmed that Call the Midwife will be returning for season 16 following the prequel series and the show's first movie, it will not be Christmas as usual in 2026, as revealed by its creator.

Heidi Thomas, who has been bringing stories about the midwives and nuns of London's East End to screens since 2012, announced the change to RadioTimes.com and other press following a screening of the upcoming 15th season, which will arrive in the New Year.

"No, there won't be a Christmas special next Christmas, not in the traditional mould," she said – with executive producer Pippa Harris later confirming that the prequel, which will be set during the Second World War, would make its debut at Christmas instead.

Call the Midwife's first-ever movie version will be filmed on the other side of the world

The first movie version of Call the Midwife is to be set Down Under, it has been revealed. Showrunner Heidi Thomas said that after the upcoming 15th series airs from January on BBC1, she will next make a prequel series, set in WWII, and then film a movie version of the drama set in 1972.

Heidi admits she needed a “temporary pause in the usual pattern” after 15 years of Call the Midwife. “I don’t think any other show has produced a series every year for that period of time,” she said. “So I think this is a lovely opportunity for us to press pause and refresh a little bit and come back with more exciting things.”

Call The Midwife boss issues sad show announcement in devastating blow to fans

Fans of Call The Midwife have been dealt a devastating blow as showrunner Heidi Thomas has revealed there will be no festive special in 2026. The show's Christmas episode has become a staple of the BBC Christmas Day schedule over the past 15 years and the 2025 offering was split into two parts which aired on December 25 and 26. However it will be missing from TV Guides next year.

Speaking exclusively to Express.co.uk and other media at a launch for the upcoming season 15, Heidi, married to Stephen McGann, who stars in the show as Dr Patrick Turner, confirmed that the special is taking a hiatus. "No, there won't be a Christmas special next Christmas, not in the traditional mould, so all of us get to enjoy on Christmas Day, which is very nice," she laughed. "Every Christmas, my whole family sit and watches it because they've never seen it before. So I cook Christmas dinner – sometimes I've cooked for up to 16 people. I'm covered in gravy, like every other mum in Britain. And then when all the other mums in Britain say, and 'now it's me time' I sit down to Call the Midwife," she revealed.
