The federal government will pass its controversial National Disability Insurance Scheme reforms with the support of the Coalition, after they sailed through the Senate.

Labor tabled 63 amendments, aimed at cracking down on fraud and making the scheme more sustainable.

The legislation will return to the lower house, where it is expected to pass with Labor's majority.

The federal government will pass reforms that it says will save the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) "from itself" by making it more sustainable and cracking down further on fraud.

The government’s controversial NDIS bill will pass after “substantial” amendments were agreed to in a deal between Labor and the Coalition, with some of the changes attracting heavy criticism from the Greens, the ACT senator David Pocock and the disability community.

Sixty-three government amendments across both houses were introduced as part of backroom deals to pass the bill in the upper house on Tuesday night, the NDIS ministers, Mark Butler and Jenny McAllister, revealed.

Changes mooted as Cummins concedes batting 'trend'

Australia captain admits current dysfunctional batting line-up is under scrutiny with selectors to ponder an intervention

One match into their mammoth year-long run of Tests, Australia are already weighing up changes to their batting unit as captain Pat Cummins admitted their poor showing against Bangladesh continued a longer-term trend.

Cummins insisted he had no regrets over his decision to bat first on the Darwin drop-in pitch despite his counterpart Najmul Shanto expressing relief that his team avoided being inserted on Thursday morning.

"Bowl first, for sure," said Shanto when asked what he would have done if he had called correctly ahead of an opening session CricViz's ball-tracking numbers suggested was close to offering as much seam movement as last summer's MCG Ashes pitch did before lunch.

Shock defeat to Bangladesh reveals bigger picture hiding in plain sight

You could pick a handful of moments during the first Test at Marrara Oval in Darwin where it was clear not everything was as it seemed on surface level.

On day two, Marnus Labuschagne sprinted off with his usual exuberance from the infield to chase down a shot that trickled towards the boundary.

The immaculately manicured outfield, offering a playing surface that was nigh on pristine, had already been praised for its lawn-like quality.

Mark Waugh on Fox Sports noted you could probably play bowls or tennis on it.

Yet as soon as Labuschagne slid for the ball, the ugly truth was revealed, as a huge clump of turf was ripped up in a heaped mass of mud and grass and injury potential.

Why the Darwin disaster is a wake-up call for Australian cricket

Darwin: How big was this win for Bangladesh? Before he spoke to the press, touring captain Najmul Hossain Shanto and his teammates received a congratulatory video call from their prime minister.

How bad was this performance by Australia? Every young batter in the country should keep their own phones close in case they get a call of a different kind from the national selectors about a Tuesday flight to join the Test squad in Mackay.

Matt Renshaw, Campbell Kellaway, Sam Konstas, Ollie Peake, your time is coming.

There may be temptations for Australia to view this as a case of rustiness against a team that had played more red ball cricket lately, but that would be a big mistake.

Piastri gives update amid Verstappen to McLaren reports

Oscar Piastri believes he will remain with McLaren next season despite speculation that Max Verstappen will replace him.

Oscar Piastri has offered an update on his position with McLaren amid ongoing speculation that Max Verstappen will replace him at the team.

Rumours have continued in recent months about a possible move for four-time World Champion Verstappen to McLaren, where he would replace Piastri and partner Lando Norris.

Piastri's manager and ex-F1 driver, Mark Webber, stated that “there has been a lot of fiction written” about the potential driver move, while McLaren CEO Zak Brown has publicly stated he his happy with his current line-up.

‘I get paid a lot of money to do those things’: Piastri on swap rumours and life off the track

Oscar Piastri had the 2025 drivers’ championship all but won. Until he didn’t. Now there are rumours of his ousting from the McLaren team. But the laconic young Aussie says he’s “not going anywhere”.

The famously unflappable McLaren driver has a cool and calm demeanour. His podium celebrations are understated and his stoic and sometimes sarcastically deadpan responses over F1 radios have generated memes.

So it’s unsurprising that whispers of a potential Max Verstappen defection to McLaren – which could knock the Australian out of the papaya-coloured English team – don’t bother him.

“I think from where I sit, I’m very comfortable in the position I’m at,” Piastri said, speaking exclusively to this masthead before the Belgian Grand Prix.

Guzman y Gomez is taking things a step further by launching an Apple CarPlay app, letting you order your usual Mexican dish without looking at your phone.

It claims to be the first fast food CarPlay app of its kind in Australia, available in cars with an infotainment system that pairs with Apple’s ecosystem. Fans react to Conor McGregor heaping praise on UFC Freedom 250 and the United States of America

Fight fans have chimed in with a myriad of reactions to combat sports icon Conor McGregor praising the UFC Freedom 250 event and the U.S.

Conor McGregor was linked to the UFC Freedom 250 fight card, as he'd previously hinted that his long-awaited comeback could finally materialize on it.

The special UFC Freedom 250 event will go down in a few hours at the White House in Washington, D.C. It marks a notable part of the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of the United States Declaration of Independence from British colonial rule.

McGregor's name was conspicuously absent from the UFC Freedom 250 fight card. Instead, the UFC confirmed that the Irishman would return to headline UFC 329 during the organization's traditional International Fight Week.

Why Conor McGregor is not at the UFC White House event despite begging for fight

Conor McGregor had initially hoped to fight Michael Chandler at the White House, before it was announced that Mauricio Ruffy would be on the card instead – with the Irishman coming up against Max Holloway a month later.

McGregor has not fought in the UFC for five years, with his return to the sport set to grab all the headlines. It appeared to make sense that it would be on the one-off event on the South Lawn of the White House. He admitted he would have liked to face Chandler, but is not too displeased about the fight not coming to fruition.

Defender Tom McCartin (concussion) will also not feature in South Australia this weekend as he continues to work through the AFL concussion protocols following his heavy collision with Saints forward Liam Ryan in the third term in the game against the Saints.

Psychedelics have robust effects on acute brain function and long-term behavior but whether they also cause enduring functional and anatomical brain changes is largely unknown. In an exploratory, placebo-controlled, within-subjects, electroencephalography (EEG), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) study in 28 healthy, entirely psychedelic-naive participants, anatomical and functional brain changes are detected from one-hour to one-month after a single high-dose (25 mg) of psilocybin. Increases in cognitive flexibility, psychological insight, and well-being are seen at one-month. Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) done before and one-month after 25 mg psilocybin reveals decreased axial diffusivity bilaterally in prefrontal-subcortical tracts that correlate with decreases in brain network modularity (fMRI) over the same month. Enduring functional brain changes are largely absent, but network modularity change (numerical decrease) negatively correlates with well-being change (significant increase), in line with previous findings in depression. Increased cortical signal entropy (EEG) at 1- and 2-hours post-dosing predicts improved psychological well-being at one-month. Next-day psychological insight mediates the entropy to well-being relationship. All effects are exclusive to 25 mg psilocybin; no effects occur with a 1 mg psilocybin placebo.

Single dose of magic mushroom psychedelic can cause anatomical brain changes, study finds

Participants took 25mg of psilocybin, reporting deeper psychological insight and better wellbeing a month later

A single dose of psilocybin, the active ingredient in magic mushrooms, can induce anatomical changes in the brain, according to research among people who took the psychedelic compound for the first time.

Scientists spotted apparent changes in the brain’s structure which were still apparent a month after healthy volunteers took the drug. If confirmed, they may help explain the therapeutic effects that psychedelics can have on anxiety, depression and addiction, researchers said.

Evidence for the changes came from specialised scans that measured the diffusion of water along nerve bundles in the brain. They suggested that some nerve tracts had become denser and more robust after the drug was taken. While the findings are preliminary, the scientists said the opposite was seen in ageing and dementia.

One dose of psilocybin changes the human brain, leading to higher entropy

This article has been reviewed according to Science X's
    editorial process
    and policies.
    Editors have highlighted
the following attributes while ensuring the content's credibility:

Researchers at UC San Francisco and Imperial College London have shown that a single dose of psilocybin, the psychedelic compound found in magic mushrooms, causes likely anatomical brain changes that last for up to a month after the experience.

The study, published in Nature Communications, was done in healthy volunteers who had never taken a psychedelic, but it may help explain psilocybin's therapeutic effects on conditions like depression, anxiety, and addiction. The researchers link temporary shifts in brain "entropy"—which is the diversity of neural activity occurring in the brain—to insight. This suggests the psychedelic trip itself is important to the drug's longer-term therapeutic effects.

RD 7 TEAM: Gunston headlines five changes

Jack Gunston is one of five inclusions for Saturday's match against Gold Coast.

Hawthorn has made five changes for its ANZAC Day match against the Gold Coast SUNS at UTAS Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

As confirmed by Sam Mitchell on Thursday morning, premiership forward Jack Gunston will return to the side after missing last week's three-point victory with a corked calf.

He will be joined in the team by Jack Dalton, Finn Maginness, Harry Morrison and Jack Scrimshaw.

James Sicily and Dylan Moore have been ruled out through suspension, Sam Butler and Flynn Perez will be managed, while Will McCabe has been omitted.

Breakout Hawks star cherishes new role ahead of big Anzac Day test

Resurgent Hawthorn spearhead Mitch Lewis has declared their goal to be the best forward line in the AFL as the Hawks look to take down Gold Coast in Saturday's Anzac Day blockbuster at Launceston.

While plenty of focus will be on Suns key forward Jamarra Ugle-Hagan's Suns debut, Lewis has made up for a frustrating few years with injuries with outstanding early season form.

The 27-year-old played just 12 games across 2024 and 2025, but has been a standout in a stacked forward line also featuring Jack Gunston and Nick Watson.

Lewis is uncontracted after this season but hopes the club will keep the band together.

Big boost for Hawks as star returns for Anzac Day clash

Hawthorn spearhead Jack Gunston will return from injury for the Hawks' Round 7 test against Gold Coast in Launceston on Saturday.

Gunston was absent from last week's win against Port Adelaide due to a corked calf.

Gunston's availability presents a selection challenge for Mitchell and his match committee, with fellow tall forwards Mitch Lewis, Calsher Dear and Will McCabe all performing well in the narrow win against the Power.

The Hawks will need to replace veterans James Sicily and Dylan Moore, who were both handed one-game suspensions for striking.

Star midfielder Will Day is progressing well after he underwent a shoulder reconstruction in January, following a dislocation in his third session back with the main group. Day has endured a wretched run with injury, having missing the start of 2024 with a stress fracture in his navicular bone, before two more issues with the same foot the following year limited him to just six games in 2025.

Isuzu UTE A-League Round 25 Match Preview

The Wellington Phoenix are making an “emotional” return to Christchurch as they bid to keep their Isuzu UTE A-League finals hopes alive.

The Phoenix are playing host to Western Sydney Wanderers on Saturday evening in what is the final sporting event at Apollo Projects Stadium before Canterbury’s leading teams move into the state-of-the-art Te Kaha. The Nix have a proud record in Christchurch, losing only once. They won their first two visits to the Garden City when Wellington played Adelaide United at the old Lancaster Park in 2010, when head coach Chris Greenacre was a Phoenix player.

“It’s quite emotional actually,” Greenacre told media on Friday when asked about being back in Christchurch. “I had some really good times down here when I was playing myself.“There was something on social media today where Ben Sigmund scored the header against Adelaide.“I think at that game there was 19 thousand there and I can remember it like it was yesterday.“We played exceptionally well that night and hopefully that’s something that can inspire our players this weekend and hopefully we can emulate that and get the result we deserve.”
