The Coles website and app have gone offline hours after a viral Reddit post highlighted a nearly 80% discount on 24-packs of premixed alcoholic drinks.

For several hours on Saturday, both the Coles website and app displayed a message advising “we’re currently offline – but not for long”. The website and app came back online, before the website went down again during the afternoon. It was back up at about 4pm AEST.

It came after a post by an Australian Reddit account on Friday about a discount on 24-packs of Jack Daniel’s & Cola 330ml bottles sold via Coles by subsidiary Liquorland which were marked down from $130 to $27, a saving of $103, or just under 80%.

The Coles website and app have crashed after a pricing glitch sent bargain-hunting shoppers into a frenzy.

The apparent error was spotted by a Reddit user about 1am on Saturday, with cases of alcohol normally worth more than $100 appearing online for as little as $27.

“Found this. I’m assuming it’s a mistake?! Go get it before it runs out (or they notice) I guess,” the user wrote.

The post quickly took off, with the original poster saying it had attracted about 184,000 views by midday.

Shoppers flooded the comments with screenshots of their bargain orders, with some claiming they had successfully collected their purchases before the error was fixed.

Coles Online Faces Alcohol Ordering Glitch Ahead of Earnings Report Following Weekly A$965 Million Drop

Coles Group Limited ASX:COL is set for a digital performance test ahead of Tuesday’s results, as an alcohol pricing issue disrupted online purchases following a 3.1% drop in shares last week.

The drop wiped out about A$965 million in equity value. Coles ended Friday at A$22.82, marking its fourth session of losses in the last five.

The technical issue emerged following the close of ASX trading. As a result, no stock prices have reacted so far. The initial market response will be seen on Monday, a day ahead of FY26 results.

Online prices for certain 24-packs plunged by close to 80%. A Jack Daniel’s pack was reduced to A$27, down from A$130. A Smirnoff case decreased to A$29, previously A$202.

Coles unveils major Flybuys change as loyalty battle against Woolworths heats up

Coles is overhauling the way shoppers can redeem Flybuys points at the checkout as it ups the ante on rival Woolworths. Shoppers will now be able to slash up to $100 off their grocery bill in one visit.

The supermarket giant has launched pay with points today, allowing members to redeem points for between $10 and $100 off instantly based on their points balance. Previously, Flybuys members were limited to $10 off per shop once they had racked up 2,000 points.

This is the same as Woolworth's $10 redemption model, with the supermarket also offering a Bank for Christmas option where customers can save their points until the redemption period at the end of the year.

ACCC blocks Coles supermarket to protect regional city's independents

The competition regulator has blocked Coles from developing a new supermarket in Kalgoorlie in WA, under a new regime for assessing acquisitions.

The city already has a Coles, a Woolworths, two franchised IGA supermarkets, and two independent grocers, and the ACCC said Coles acquiring the new site was likely to substantially lessen competition.

Coles could take the ACCC to the Australian Competition Tribunal for an appeal overseen by an economist, a businessperson and a judge.

In an unprecedented move, Australia's consumer watchdog has exercised new powers to block the opening of a Coles supermarket, on the grounds it could knock out smaller competitors in the surrounding region.

Australia's second-largest supermarket chain has been hoping to acquire the lease for a vacant lot in Somerville, a suburb of the Goldfields town of Kalgoorlie-Boulder in Western Australia.

Consumer group CHOICE revealed that Aldi is, once again, the cheapest grocery store, especially for winter food essentials.

Every three months, the consumer group compares the grocery prices of similar items at Aldi, Coles, Woolworths and IGA to see how far your money will go at the checkout.

Aldi has consistently come out on top in the survey, which has been running for three years, and it's no different for the latest supermarket grocery basket report.

A popular vegan product is being recalled as authorities fear it contains an undeclared allergen.

Biocheese’s Cheddar Shred in the 200g is being recalled as it contains undeclared milk which may be an allergen for some consumers.

The vegan and lactose intolerant friendly product has been available in IGA and Coles nationally.

It can be identified with the best before date of August 27, 2026.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand said the recall only applies to the products that do not declare milk.

Whether you love them or hate them, chances are you've likely used one recently. Self-serve supermarket checkouts have been a controversial subject since they first appeared in Woolworths and Coles stores in the noughties.

They have become extremely popular in the years since, and now every major chain, including Aldi, IGA and Costco, has rolled out the technology, which is ever-evolving. Other retail heavyweights like Bunnings and Big W have also jumped on the bandwagon.

While the kiosks have been credited with speeding up the payment process, which would otherwise rely on staff members, frustrated shoppers have heavily criticised self-serve checkouts for costing workers their jobs, increasing instances of theft or making shoppers feel like criminals themselves.

Woolworths, Coles put on notice with price gouging lawsuit threat: ‘Will be enforced’

Australia’s competition watchdog has put Woolworths and Coles on notice, warning it is likely to bring legal action against the supermarkets under new anti-price gouging laws. The supermarket giants have vehemently denied gouging customers and have criticised the looming regulations.

ACCC boss Gina Cass-Gottlieb says the watchdog was likely to sue Coles and Woolworths, “whether it happens in the first year or it happens somewhat subsequent from it”. Speaking to The Australian Financial Review, she said the regulator would closely monitor worrying price rises from July 1 when a ban on charging prices deemed excessive comes into effect.

An ACCC spokesperson reiterated to Yahoo Finance that the regulations banning excessive pricing by supermarkets “will be enforced by the ACCC”.

Woolworths, Coles could face price gouging lawsuit within 12 months

The competition watchdog says it expects to launch legal action against Coles and Woolworths for price gouging using new laws that come into effect this year, with the first case potentially launched within 12 months.

Australian Competition and Consumer Commission chairwoman Gina Cass-Gottlieb said the regulator would closely monitor worrying price rises from the July 1 start date of the new laws, and she expected the supermarket giants to change pricing practices before then.
