Strong starts are crucial to securing progression to the knockouts and the best possible passage, but Portugal stumbled out of the blocks on day seven — unlike England, Ghana and Colombia, who all won.

All teams have now played their first game at the tournament and we are preparing for the second round of matches. We get another look at one of the hosts, Canada, later today, who will fancy their chances against Qatar.

France’s litmus test provided positive results with an opening game 3-1 victory over Senegal. Unlike Spain and Brazil, two of the other fancied teams, they did not underwhelm.

FIFA World Cup 2026 Power Rankings: Argentina surge behind Lionel Messi, France go top, USMNT start strong

The World Cup is finally here and after the first round of matches, all 48 teams have gotten their first taste of action in the tournament. We've also already had our share of shocks, none bigger than Spain's draw against Cabo Verde and Portugal's stumble against DR Congo, involving two of the most highly anticipated sides in the competition. Meanwhile, Mauricio Pochettino's United States men's national team enjoyed a dream start, impressing in their debut with a 4-1 win against Paraguay and strengthening their position ahead of their second group-stage match against Australia.

Elsewhere it's been a tournament of stars. Lionel Messi continues to age like a fine wine with an opening game hat trick for Argentina against Algeria. Right behind him are some of the world's biggest goal scorers with Harry Kane, Erling Haaland and Kylian Mbappe all netting twice for England, Norway and France, respectively. As we head into game two, the picture will start to become clearer about which 32 teams will advance from the 48-team field, and which 16 teams (the last place finisher in each group plus the four worst third-place finishers) will go home.

World Cup live updates: Shock over Iran player’s ‘political’ celebration

A rift between South Korea players and the country’s media has overshadowed the side’s preparations for Thursday’s World Cup match against Mexico, following disparaging comments about captain Son Heung-min.

Estadio Monterrey — usually known as Estadio BBVA — is built in the shadow of the Cerro de la Silla, a mountain which rises 1,820 metres above sea level and is part of the Sierra Madre Oriental range in northeastern Mexico. Its distinctive peaks are visible from inside the stadium, which will host four games this summer, including a round of 32 match.

It is an icon of Monterrey, and one that has spawned its fair share of myths and legends. Its name — ‘saddle hill’ in English — is said to come from Portuguese conquistador Alberto del Canto having seen that likeness in the mountain’s ‘U’ shape in the 16th century. But the city’s inhabitants have given it plenty of other nicknames, including the Giant of Monterrey, the Silent Guardian and the Crown of the City (because of its various peaks).

From cartel prison to children's playground: the transformation of Mexican World Cup host Monterrey

On a recent afternoon in northern Mexico, about a dozen children played soccer in an idyllic park on a site where, a decade earlier, 49 people had died in a vicious battle between two warring cartels fighting for control of one of Mexico’s most violent prisons.

The episode – in which many inmates were hacked to death with knives or bludgeoned with chairs – in the notorious Topo Chico prison was one of the bloodiest in the violence that consumed the metropolitan area of Monterrey in the early 2010s.

World Cup 2026: Alphonso Davies in Canada squad despite recent injuries

Head coach Jesse Marsch has included Bayern Munich defender Alphonso Davies in what he described the best 26-man squad "ever assembled" by co-hosts Canada for this summer's World Cup.

Davies, 25, was deemed sufficiently fit for inclusion despite recovering from a hamstring injury, while Juventus forward Jonathan David also makes the cut.

Porto midfielder Stephen Eustaquio, Villarreal's Tajon Buchanan and Tani Oluwaseyi, and Southampton forward Cyle Larin are all included.

"We have really our best group of 26 players that this country has ever assembled at any one time," said Marsch.

"Are all of them right now at full 100%? No, but they're close," he added, signalling frustration at the repeated questions from media about players' injuries.

Who is in and who is out? Canada men's national team roster revealed

Canada men’s national team head coach Jesse Marsch has announced his 26-player roster for the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup from the team’s pre-tournament base in Charlotte, North Carolina. Canada will host the tournament alongside the United States and Mexico and will open the tournament in Toronto against Bosnia on June 12. Canada will then face Qatar on June 18 and Switzerland on June 24 in Switzerland.

Marsch took 32 players to the pre-tournament camp south of the border. Six players were cut today. Among defenders, Ralph Priso, Zorhan Bassong and Jamie Knight-Lebel failed to make the team. Marsch also cut midfielder Jayden Nelson and forwards Jacen Russell-Rowe and Daniel Jebbison. Jebbison might have been the biggest surprise, as Jacob Shaffelburg was included in the squad instead.
