The 2026 FIFA Men's World Cup kicks off on June 11 when co-hosts Mexico play South Africa in Mexico City, but six qualification places are still up for grabs in the European and intercontinental playoffs.

The final qualified teams will be confirmed Tuesday with four European nations and the winners of the two intercontinental playoff finals sealing their spot in the Canada, Mexico and the United America this summer.

Kosovo will host Türkiye attempting to reach their first World Cup, and four-time world champions Italy must win at Bosnia and Herzegovina to avoid missing out on the finals for the third successive tournament.

The expansion of this summer’s 48-team tournament mean Tuesday’s games will be the best we see until the round of 16

There is always a slightly odd rhythm to the World Cup. The final round of qualifying games is almost invariably more exciting than the early games at the tournament itself, and now with 32 teams making it through the group stage and into the knockout rounds, that is likely to be even more true for the 2026 edition. Those final qualifiers in November were thrilling and meaningful – Troy Parrott’s hat-trick! Scotland scoring two absurdly good goals in the same game! DR Congo beating Nigeria on penalties as bottles rained down from the stands! Honduras failing to score against Costa Rica! – and Tuesday will be too as 12 teams battle for the six remaining slots.

The final six places for this year's FIFA World Cup will be decided on Wednesday.

Four European teams will secure their berths in the UEFA play-offs, and two more nations will qualify through FIFA's play-off tournament.

The World Cup will be a 48-team tournament for the first time, and will be hosted in the USA, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 – July 19.

Qualifying for the biggest-ever FIFA Men's World Cup started in late 2023 and has already produced some incredible stories, including the unlikely berths of Curaçao and Cape Verde.

Can Italy end World Cup exile? Gennaro Gattuso's revitalised Azzurri looking to banish their demons against Bosnia and Herzegovina

Italy are World Cup royalty. Only five-time winners Brazil have been crowned champions on more occasions than the Azzurri (four). And yet it's now 20 years since Italy last lifted the trophy. Worse still, they've failed to qualify for the past two tournaments, meaning there's an entire generation that have never seen their country even play in a World Cup.

One would be tempted to go all Helen Lovejoy on it and plead, 'Won't somebody please think of the children?!' But the players already are. "We know full well that we are responsible for all those kids out there and the entire Italian football movement," midfielder Manuel Locatelli told RAI Sport last week. "We are certainly not lacking in motivation."

Kylian Mbappe Reveals Injury Truth—And There Is Still Cause for Concern at Real Madrid

Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappé addressed the “false” speculation surrounding his knee injury in recent weeks, taking aim at those who reported on it “without having any basis in fact.”

The France international missed three weeks of action for Los Blancos to finally deal with a nagging issue plaguing his knee since December. Rumors swirled regarding the severity of the injury, with some reports claiming Mbappé needed surgery while others prescribed him a few weeks rest.

Now that he returned to the pitch, appearing off the bench against Manchester City and Atlético Madrid last week, the 27-year-old is setting the record straight about his injury.

FIFA World Cup 2026: Security concerns grow in US as funding stalls

US preparations fall behind for FIFA World Cup 2026, leading to growing concerns about security risks at events.

Intelligence briefings have warned of the potential for extremists and criminals to target the FIFA World Cup 2026 at a time when hundreds of millions of dollars of approved security funds have been delayed, causing United States preparations to fall behind.

The previously unreported briefings from US federal and state officials and FIFA, the international federation overseeing the World Cup, outlined the risk of extremist attacks, including attacks on transportation infrastructure and civil unrest related to President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

The football World Cup, one of the globe’s biggest sporting events, will be held in June and July this year across three countries – the United States, Canada and Mexico.

Boston World Cup committee secures major cash infusion even as financial concerns linger

It was one big step forward and one apparent step back this week for the local committee acting as host of the seven World Cup games in Boston.

After months of waiting, the federal government announced Wednesday that it is releasing $46 million to Massachusetts for security for the event. Yet the sudden exit of a top fund-raising executive with Boston’s organizing committee raised fresh questions about the region’s readiness to host the massive spectacle in less than three months.

The nearly simultaneous twin announcements came on the heels of a months-long standoff between Boston Soccer 26, the host committee stacked with members close to Patriots owner Robert Kraft, and the town of Foxborough over security funding at Gillette Stadium. That dispute was resolved this week, but not before drawing unwanted national attention to the Boston host committee’s financial struggles and logistical missteps.

FEMA Awards $625 Million for States and Cities to Secure FIFA World Cup Matches

New FIFA World Cup Grant Program Will Help Host Cities Keep Players and Fans Safe

The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has awarded $625 million to empower all 11 cities hosting FIFA World Cup 2026 matches to bolster security preparations ahead of the tournament, in close coordination with the White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup 2026. This funding, administered through the new FIFA World Cup Grant Program, will enable state and local officials to hold operational exercises, conduct staff background checks and strengthen cybersecurity defenses. Recipients can also use awarded funds to pay for increased police and emergency response at FIFA venues, hotels and transportation hubs. The FIFA World Cup Grant Program is just one part of the Trump Administration’s whole-of-government strategy to ensure the safety and security of American communities during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, as outlined in the Executive Order on Establishing the White House Task Force on the FIFA World Cup.

Controversy at Women's Asian Cup after former coach leads 'Taiwan' chant

Social media videos show the former coach orchestrating supporters in a chant of "Taiwan: add oil!" — which loosely translates to "let's go Taiwan!"

      (X: @yaozhang02)

The Women's Asian Cup has been embroiled in another diplomatic controversy, with Taiwanese officials lodging a complaint after a former national coach was ejected from a stadium for leading a chant that included the word "Taiwan."

The incident has raised political tensions ahead of tomorrow's high profile quarter-final clash between China and Chinese Taipei — the name Taiwan competes under due to Asian Football Confederation rules.

Social media videos show Chen Kuei-jen orchestrating fellow supporters in a chant of "Taiwan: add oil!" — a Chinese language phrase which loosely translates to "let's go Taiwan!" — during its group stage match against India at Parramatta Stadium this week.

China coach tells players to stay ‘calm’ in Taiwan clash at Asian Cup

China face Taiwan in a highly charged quarterfinal at the Women’s Asian Cup, which already has a political focus.

China coach Ante Milicic urged his players to remain “calm and confident” in Saturday’s charged Women’s Asian Cup quarterfinal against Taiwan.

The reigning champions are targeting a record-extending 10th continental title but are wary of an opponent that has shown improvement as the tournament has progressed.

Taiwan were beaten 2-0 by strongly fancied Japan in the group phase but were by no means outclassed.

“They gave Japan a very difficult game and then went on to win their next two matches, so we know this will be a tough proposition,” said Milicic ahead of the clash in Perth.

With the FA Cup Fifth Round coming to an end on Monday night as West Ham United take on Brentford, we will be down to our final eight teams and in the business end of the competition.

The FA Cup quarterfinals are always tense and usually dramatic, with a spot at Wembley on the line and the chance to move that much closer to winning the oldest national competition in world football.

Of course, part of winning the FA Cup is down to luck of the draw and with four of the Premier League big dogs still in the competition, they will hope to avoid each other at this stage of the competition, while some of the minnows will want to welcome them to their grounds.

Women's Asian Cup MD2 talking points: Why North Korea's Choe is must-watch

Despite her limited preparation, ESPN The Far Post was impressed by Mary Fowler's cameo in the Matildas' 1-0 win over the Philippines at the Women's Asian Cup. (0:48)

The second round of matches at the Women's Asian Cup have seen five nations book their ticket to the knockout stages.

South Korea's 3-0 win over the Philippines, and Australia's 4-0 victory over Iran ensures they will finish as the top two sides in Group A — though the order they finish in is yet to be determined.

Plucky Bangladesh teases Asian Cup contest as North Korea, China advance

For 45 minutes, North Korea's 5-0 defeat of Bangladesh promised to be the game for which the 2026 Women's Asian Cup had so yearned.

Not for its fireworks, not for its quality — but for its jeopardy.

North Korea had put the ball in the net no fewer than three times but had nothing to show for it, with a handball, two tight off-side calls and close to 10 minutes of VAR tedium combining to keep things scoreless.

Cricket stunned by World Cup insanity | Finn Allen’s record ton blasts New Zealand past South A…

Finn Allen’s record ton blasts New Zealand past South Africa into T20 World Cup final

South Africa won every match they could afford to lose in this tournament and then lost the first one that they had to win.

They were completely marmalised by New Zealand, who won the first semi-final by nine wickets. Finn Allen ripped through South Africa’s feared fast bowling attack, and hit an unbeaten hundred off just 33 balls. It was the fastest century in the history of the competition, and, as Allen said himself, the innings of his life. Only two batters have ever hit a faster ton in international T20 cricket.

South Africa’s captain, Aiden Markram, blamed the change in conditions for throwing off his team. “We’ll reflect as a group,” he said. “We’ll let the emotions settle first and foremost and once they do we’ll get back on the horse and try and get better. But we’re obviously hugely disappointed with the result, it feels like we’ve been slapped in the face.”

Black Caps hand Proteas 'bloody walloping' to reach T20 World Cup final

A 33-ball century to Finn Allen helps New Zealand to a nine-wicket win over South Africa in the first men's T20 World Cup semifinal.

The Proteas entered the knockout match with an unbeaten record at the tournament.

India and England face off in the second semifinal on Friday morning AEDT.

South Africa coach Shukri Conrad has described his side's nine-wicket defeat to New Zealand in the men's T20 World Cup semifinals as a "bloody walloping".

The Proteas went into the match at Kolkata's Eden Gardens as the only unbeaten team in the tournament.
