How daylight saving leaves one Australian border town operating on two different clocks

SBS acknowledges the Traditional Custodians of Country and their connections and continuous care for the skies, lands and waterways throughout Australia.

In the wee hours of Sunday morning, daylight saving kicks in for the long Australian summer, when clocks skip forward by an hour from 2am to 3am.

But while the citizens of NSW, Victoria, Tasmania, South Australia and the ACT will enjoy an extra hour of sunshine after clocking off, Queensland remains the eastern seaboard outlier.

Daylight saving is an annual talking point on the Gold Coast, with Mayor Tom Tate on Wednesday reiterating calls for daylight saving to be introduced in Queensland's southeast corner.

When does daylight saving time end? Here's when to 'fall back' in Seattle

SEATTLE – Much of the U.S. will soon shift their clocks back an hour to mark the end of daylight saving time. It comes after many had moved an hour forward in the spring.

While most associate daylight saving time with getting an extra hour of sleep, it also means the sun will set earlier, often before 5 p.m. in Washington.

Daylight saving time is the period between spring and fall when clocks are set one hour ahead of standard time to make better use of daylight. Each year, it begins on the second Sunday of March and ends on the first Sunday of November.

Adelaide skips an hour this weekend as Australia splits into five time zones

Late dinners, beach walks and after-work drinks are about to get a little brighter, with daylight saving returning to South Australia this Sunday.

The season of late sunsets, after-work beach trips and squeezing a little more into the evening is almost here.

Daylight saving returns to South Australia this weekend, with clocks moving forward one hour at 2am on Sunday, October 4, jumping straight to 3am.

And while it means losing an hour of sleep overnight, for most of us, the trade-off of welcoming back those warm Adelaide evenings is well worth the sacrifice.

From Sunday, sunset in Adelaide will suddenly shift to around 7:20pm, giving locals more daylight for everything from coastal walks, backyard barbecues and midweek catch-ups that no longer feel like they are happening after dark.

Businesses and residents want state to revisit daylight saving

A debate as old as time has resurfaced in Queensland as business groups and individuals fresh attempts to bring daylight saving to the Sunshine State, or at least to its south-eastern corner.

But the Queensland government has quashed calls for another referendum on the topic, despite thousands signing petitions to revisit the perennial debate and businesses saying productivity is being undermined without it.

No solid evidence daylight saving time affects mental health, researchers find

Some people experience effects similar to minor jet lag, but no association with significant declines in mental health, study shows

When the clocks “spring forward” this weekend, there may be more heart attacks and more fatal traffic accidents, but fewer crimes that involve physical harm.

Daylight saving time (DST) has been blamed for many ills, from faded curtains to confused dogs, but a major international study has found more evidence is needed for many of the claims around the time shift.

It also found only weak and inconsistent evidence that the clock change affects mental health, including rates of depression and substance abuse.

Research debunks mental health link to daylight saving

Daylight saving is not causing major mental health issues, researchers say, as Australians get set to lose an hour of sleep.

An international study involving researchers from Swinburne University found daylight savings had no clear or consistent effect on significant mental health episodes.

But Swinburne's Ben Bullock said it remained unclear if clocks moving forward could have a more minor impact on mood.
