    Trent Alexander-Arnold's omission from Thomas Tuchel's largest England squad is the latest blow to his stop-start international career and casts huge doubt on his hopes of playing at the World Cup.

    Head coach Tuchel said on Friday he had "not yet" spoken to the 27-year-old about his exclusion, with the full-back now absent from four successive squads.

    Alexander-Arnold is back playing for Real Madrid after injury but is not in the 35-man group for the last international camp before Tuchel finalises his squad for this summer's tournament in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

    Decision to essentially name two squads featuring 35 players overall is the ‘least messy’ solution and offers the best chance to assess fringe players

    It has been on Thomas Tuchel’s mind for some time, certainly since his England team secured qualification to the World Cup last November with the perfect record – played eight, won eight, zero goals conceded. The March international window, the last one before the finals in the summer, was always going to be less ideal.

    It arrives at the moment when the club season enters its final stretch; trophies on the line, European places, survival or relegation. The lot. It is not as if the players have not already been pushed hard. Now rotation for the very best, the ones that Tuchel counts on, is simply not an option.

    Manchester United duo Harry Maguire and Kobbie Mainoo have been recalled to the England setup but Trent Alexander-Arnold is left out as Thomas Tuchel named a mammoth 35-man squad for upcoming friendlies against Uruguay and Japan at Wembley.

    Neither Maguire nor Mainoo have previously been selected by Tuchel before with both last appearing for England in a 2-0 win over the Republic of Ireland under interim boss Lee Carsley in September 2024.

    Where the India vs England T20 World Cup 2026 semi-final could be won or lost (3:54)

    England won the toss in the semi-final and had no hesitation in putting India in at the chase-friendly Wankhede Stadium. India's captain Suryakumar Yadav, though, emphatically said that he wanted to bat first anyway to access scoreboard pressure of a big match. He also said he didn't expect any dew because it was a windy evening.

    Either way, India now needed to do what hasn't been done since 2014: successfully defend a total in a T20 World Cup knockout match played at night. The change in conditions from evening to night was quite evident during the first semi-final, which New Zealand won against the unbeaten South African side.

    Will Jacks has shone with both bat and ball as England brushed aside co-hosts Sri Lanka in Pallekelle in their Super Eight clash at the T20 World Cup

    Will ‌Jacks has impressed with bat and ball to rescue England from a poor start and help them to a 51-run ‌victory over Sri Lanka in a low-scoring Super Eight match at the Twenty20 World Cup.

    Tournament co-hosts Sri ‌Lanka appeared to be well set after restricting England to a below-par 9-146 in the Group 2 match at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Sunday.

    But Jacks, who made 21 useful runs down the order, returned to claim 3-22 as England bowled out Sri Lanka for 95 inside 17 overs to prevail.

    Sri Lanka's batters could have taken better options, according to Vikram Rathour, after the hosts crashed to 95 all out against England, chasing 147. Rathour has been the side's batting consultant since January, but Sri Lanka have been a modest T20 batting side for years now, falling short of the Super Eight in the last T20 World Cup, and having had to qualify for the two previous iterations.

    And still, in front of a full house in Pallekele, and with a relatively low total to chase, Sri Lanka lost five wickets in the powerplay. Rathour said the pitch had been tricky.

    Bowlers shine as England claim big Super 8 win over Sri Lanka

    He made his Ashes debut in Australia, got engaged to his partner Ana in Sydney and now, at times single-handedly, is taking England towards the T20 World Cup semi-finals.

    "That is not for me to answer," laughed his captain Harry Brook.

    "But he has had three man-of-the-match awards this World Cup and I don't think he has played his best cricket yet."

    They were 15-year-olds when they played against each other at the famous Bunbury Festival – Jacks playing for the London schools' side and Brook the north of England.
