Ahead of her final Nine News Sydney bulletin tonight, after nearly 25 years at Nine, George Gardner paid a visit to her former stomping ground at the Today show.

Speaking to Karl Stefanovic and Sarah Abo she said, “I feel incredibly thankful, Sarah, I’ve had so many wonderful opportunities. I’ve met so many great people. I’ve worked with the best in the industry. What more could I want?

“But I got to a stage where I just decided that as much as I love the craft of news reading – I really love it- I don’t need to tell you, the news is getting increasingly bleak, and I think there is possibly an element of vicarious sadness, trauma from continually reading pretty heavy stuff.

It's safe to say the Czech curse continues to haunt Alex Eala.

Utter domination unfolded in the Filipina's round of 16 match in the 2026 Miami Open, as she absorbed a 6-0, 6-2 drubbing at the hands of 14th seed Karolína Muchová early Tuesday morning (Philippine time).

For the second straight WTA 1000 tournament, a player from the Czech Republic ended Eala's run. Linda Nosková dealt her a similar fate in the Round of 16 at Indian Wells, dropping her to a troubling 0-12 record against Czech opposition.

Ausar Thompson exits Pistons' loss to Spurs with ankle sprain

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

SAN ANTONIO — Detroit Pistons forward Ausar Thompson left Thursday's 121-106 loss to the San Antonio Spurs in the first quarter because of a sprained right ankle and didn't return.

"Ausar obviously means a lot to us," Pistons coach J.B. Bickerstaff said. "What we were able to do defensively, what he does defensively, the impact he has, obviously, you miss. We just had to figure out a way collectively to pick it up."

Thompson suffered the injury on a drive to the basket with 9:54 remaining in the opening quarter. With Victor Wembanyama trailing and Stephon Castle defending at the basket, Thompson planted hard off his right foot before immediately limping off the court.

Ausar Thompson, Ron Holland injuries hamper Detroit Pistons vs Spurs

SAN ANTONIO — In their second and final game of the regular season against one of the Western Conference's top contenders, the Detroit Pistons fell short.

They lost to the San Antonio Spurs on the road, 121-106, on Thursday, March 6, to fall to 45-16. Former No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyama (38 points, 16 rebounds and five blocks) and De'Aaron Fox (29 points) lifted San Antonio offensively and they held the Pistons to 40.2% shooting.

Cade Cunningham, a former No. 1 overall pick himself, led the Pistons with 26 points and eight rebounds, but was held to 38.5% shooting. The Pistons trailed by as many as 22 points early in the third quarter before getting within eight points with a 25-11 run. But the Spurs pulled away with a 12-7 run to open the fourth, and outscored the Pistons 28-21 in the final period.

Ausar Thompson Injury Update: Pistons Defender Leaves Game vs Spurs with Right Ankle Issue

The Detroit Pistons suffered a worrying moment early in their matchup against the San Antonio Spurs when one of their key defensive players, Ausar Thompson, was forced to leave the game after appearing to suffer a right ankle injury. The incident occurred only a few minutes into the first quarter, immediately raising concern among teammates, coaches, and fans.

Thompson has become an important part of Detroit’s lineup this season, especially on the defensive side of the ball. His energy, ability to guard multiple positions, and overall hustle have played a big role in the Pistons’ success this year. Seeing him leave the court so early in the game created uncertainty for the team, particularly in such a competitive matchup.

PHOENIX — Portland Trail Blazers All-Star guard Deni Avdija left Sunday's 92-77 win against the Phoenix Suns because of a lower back injury.

Avdija was listed as questionable coming into the game but decided to play. He lasted just one minute before leaving the court and going back to the locker room.

Avdija — who has been battling lower back issues for weeks — came into the night averaging 25 points, 7.2 rebounds and 6.8 assists.

Avdija Exits Early Versus Suns With Back Issue

Portland Trail Blazers All-Star Deni Avdija’s attempt to suit up against the Phoenix Suns on Sunday night only lasted 59 seconds of game action.

On Portland’s second offensive possession in Phoenix, Avdija’s back appeared to lock up again after he backed down Suns guard Ryan Dunn in the post and passed the ball out to Donovan Clingan. There was minimal contact on the play, but Avdija immediately reached for his lower back in noticeable discomfort and walked toward the Blazers bench as the Suns went down the floor on offense. Portland forward Jerami Grant committed an intentional foul to stop play, and Avdija checked out at the 11:01 mark of the first quarter.

Suns' Dillon Brooks: Exits with hand injury

Brooks went to the locker room during the first quarter of Saturday's game against the Magic due to a left hand injury, Hayden Cilley of ClutchPoints reports.

Brooks appeared to be clutching at his left hand/wrist, and he has been taken to the locker room to undergo further tests to determine whether he can return to Saturday's contest. Jordan Goodwin and Grayson Allen should both see more minutes off the bench for as long as Brooks is out of the game.

Dillon Brooks Leaves Suns vs Magic With Injury

PHOENIX — Phoenix Suns forward Dillon Brooks has exited action at Mortgage Matchup Center.

Brooks left action late in the first quarter against the Orlando Magic with what appeared to be thumb injury, according to the team's broadcast. Orlando led Phoenix 25-21 at the end of the first.

Brooks is averaging a career high 21.1 points per game this season and has emerged as a key part of Phoenix's resurge as an aggressively physical team on both ends of the floor.

The Suns, with Devin Booker out, need Brooks' presence to pair with Jalen Green on the court. Brooks left action with five points and three rebounds.

Dillon Brooks Exit Threatens Suns’ Short-Handed Rotation and Physical Identity

Immediate impact landed on Phoenix’s rotation when dillon brooks left Saturday’s game early with a hand concern. With the team already missing a key scorer, his departure removes a primary source of physical defense and perimeter scoring that the Suns have relied on this season. The timing matters: Phoenix now has to adjust rotations and on-court roles in a game where aggressiveness was supposed to be renewed.

Brooks’ early departure shifts pressure onto remaining wings and perimeter creators, particularly the on-court partner the Suns had planned to pair him with. The pairing was meant to restore an aggressive, physical identity on both ends of the floor; losing Brooks undermines that immediate plan and forces coaching staff to reallocate minutes. The Suns’ pre-game emphasis on returning to a physical brand makes the loss more than a single-game setback—it knocks the team off a short-term blueprint for matchups when other starters are unavailable.

Trail Blazers' Deni Avdija: Exits with back issue

Avdija won't return to Thursday's game against the Heat due to a back injury. He'll end the night with 20 points (6-11 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 6-6 FT), seven rebounds and four assists in 18 minutes.

Avdija checked out of the game with 10:03 remaining in the third quarter and was later seen wearing a wrap on his back. The team announced shortly after that he wouldn't return the game. Avdija recently returned from a three-game absence due to a lower-back strain, so this is a concerning development.

Trail Blazers injuries: Gameday updates on Avdija, Holiday, Grant vs. Lakers

The Portland Trail Blazers’ debilitating injury situation has improved dramatically over the last week.

Deni Avdija has been ruled out of the Blazers’ Saturday night home game against the Los Angeles Lakers, ensuring he will miss his third consecutive outing. The injury, originally labeled lower back soreness, has now been diagnosed as a lower back strain.

The Blazers’ starting forward went through a light pregame workout before the team’s win over the Atlanta Hawks on Thursday and moved fluidly without any visible discomfort. Acting coach Tiago Splitter said the Blazers are hopeful the injury will not keep Avdija sidelined long-term.

Blazers Notes: Avdija, Injuries, Love, Cissoko, Hinson

Trail Blazers forward Deni Avdija has been upgraded to questionable for Sunday’s game in Sacramento, the team announced (Twitter link). As Sean Highkin of The Rose Garden Report observes (via Twitter), the upgraded status is a good sign for Avdija potentially returning after missing three games with a lower back strain.

Avdija is having an excellent season for Portland, averaging 26.1 points, 7.1 rebounds and 6.9 assists on .468/.355/.801 shooting in 40 appearances (35.4 minutes per game). The 25-year-old suffered the back injury last Sunday against New York.

Jrue Holiday, Jerami Grant and Robert Williams are all doubtful to suit up on the second night of a back-to-back. Holiday and Grant recently returned from lengthy injury absences, while Williams has battled knee issues for years.
