HSBC Australia’s Deposit Book Is Back in Play; NAB Shares Fall 1.4%

National Australia Bank is among potential buyers conducting due diligence on HSBC Australia’s deposit portfolio, according to a report published Friday by MT Newswires. Neither bank has announced an agreement, a price or the balance of deposits under review. For NAB investors, those missing terms matter more than the strategic logic of adding customer funding.

NAB shares were A$38.685 at 1:56 p.m. AEST, down A$0.535, or 1.36%, from Thursday’s A$39.22 close, according to delayed Yahoo Finance data. The stock had traded between A$38.57 and A$39.26, with about 1.09 million shares recorded in the one-minute data. That incomplete volume is not comparable with Thursday’s full-session 8.02 million shares.

‘Michael 2’ Eyes Filming Start ‘Towards the End of This Year’ or Early 2027 as Lionsgate Teases Release Date

Lionsgate is working on the sequel to “Michael” and hopes to start rolling the cameras soon on the second biopic about Michael Jackson.

The studio hopes to begin production in late 2026 or early 2027, Lionsgate’s motion picture chief Adam Fogelson said on Thursday’s earnings call, with the hopes of releasing the final product at the end of next year or in the first half of 2028.

Although the studio waited to officially greenlight the follow-up film, this spring’s “Michael,” which became a box office juggernaut with $1 billion globally, ends with the words “His Story Continues” — making it clear that audiences hadn’t seen the last of the King of Pop.

Lionsgate execs talk potential ‘Michael 2’ timeline

Lionsgate executives said production on the sequel to their $1bn-grossing Michael Jackson biopic Michael could start as early as the end of this year and separately weighed in on the ongoing Paramount-Warner Bros Discovery (WBD) merger saga in a Q1 earnings call.

“We are hard at work in making sure we can put together a sequel that’s worthy of the success and the enthusiasm that the first movie generated and we’re fully engaged with everybody,” film group chairman Adam Fogelson said on Thursday afternoon.

“While we are not ready to announce everything at the moment I will tell you we are targeting a production start towards the end of this year and early next and think that somewhere between the end of calendar ’27 and the first half of calendar ’28 would be a current thought of where the movie could go.”

Sabalenka shows off growth on grass to dominate Ostapenko at Wimbledon

As Aryna Sabalenka marched towards a convincing victory over the ever-dangerous Jelena Ostapenko, she opted for a slight change of pace. Leading 6-4, 2-1 and 30-0, Sabalenka followed up a massive serve by immediately flitting to the net.

She surely had visions of her serve and volley attempt ending in triumphant Tim Henman-esque fashion, but that is not quite how things played out. She instead misjudged the path of Ostapenko’s slow, lofty return, and her shanked smash landed harmlessly on the service line. Ostapenko calmly ended the point with a forehand passing shot winner.

In her embarrassment, all the world No 1 could do was laugh, before immediately erasing the point from her mind. This was, however, the most interesting and revealing moment in her solid 6-4, 6-4 win over Ostapenko.

Veteran Wallaby eyes a fifth World Cup – but there’ll be no more retirement parties

Evergreen Wallabies prop James Slipper says he will put his hand up to play at a record fifth Rugby World Cup in Australia next year, but only if he earns selection and is the best option for the team.

Oh, and there is one other proviso: there can be no more retirement parties.

“The thought of making everyone go through that send-off again sits uneasily with me,” Slipper says. “If I do come back and manage to play another game, I definitely do not want another send-off. I have had my turn.”

Slipper, the most-capped Wallaby player in history with 151 Tests, is set to extend his record by at least a few more games after re-joining the Wallabies this week in camp, ahead of Tests against Ireland, France and Italy in July.

I'm back: Slipper confirms Wallabies unretirement ahead of Nations Championship

The following statement was released today by James Slipper, through the Wallabies, in response to questions about his future career plans: I’m back.

Slipper will complete a remarkable retirement U-turn and has made himself available for the July Tests and potentially beyond, with the squad set to be named on Friday.

ASX eyes lower open as investors await RBA speeches

The Australian sharemarket is set to dip on Monday as investors prepare for fresh evidence that the economy is cooling down and a flurry of central bank speeches for clues on where interest rates are heading next.

Futures for the S&P/ASX 200 Index suggest a softer start to the week, pointing down 13 points, or 0.1 per cent, taking a breather from the biggest rally in nearly two months on Friday. The benchmark ended the month with a modest 0.7 per cent gain, but it is still lagging international peers.

The US-Iran rollercoaster rolls on, with every day a new revelation and a new reality. As the week started, investors saw a potential peace deal quickly escalate to war and attacks by the United States by lunchtime, only for the following day to see it back to promises of a deal by President Trump, followed by yet more war.

By Thursday, investors didn’t know which way was up, with the ASX opening relatively flat before conceding a whopping 1.5 per cent by midday after Iran fired warning shots at tankers leaving the Strait of Hormuz.

Trump denied anything was awry Friday, stating US and Iranian negotiators had reached a tentative agreement to extend the ceasefire in the 3-month-old war by 60 days – which Iran quickly refuted before firing on a US base in Kuwait (intercepted).

Former Wallabies captain and proud Papua New Guinean Will Genia is open to working with the PNG Chiefs – in any capacity – as he plots his next move after almost a decade in Japan.

After retiring last year, Genia will also finish up as skills coach with the Kintetsu Liners at the end of the Japanese season.

Panthers sign another halfback as Nathan Cleary weighs up whether he'll leave NRL club

The Penrith Panthers have reportedly signed a gun halfback out of the clutches of rugby union, and many are questioning whether they could be planning for life without Nathan Cleary. Panthers superstar Cleary is off contract at the end of 2027, meaning he'd hit the free agency market on November 1 this year unless Penrith re-sign him before then.

The Panthers are desperate to lock down the 28-year-old on a long-term extension, but Cleary has stated he's open to testing the open market and exploring what might be out there. The halfback has only ever played for the Panthers, but some have claimed he could earn $2 million per year on the open market.

Billy Slater explains the 'huge attraction' that could land PNG its golden goose

NRL legend Billy Slater believes the Papua New Guinea Chiefs will be an incredibly attractive option for Nathan Cleary, and could see him pocket an extra $2m per season.

This is because the player salaries in PNG will be tax free. If he earns $2.5m per season without tax, it would be the equivalent of a $4.5m salary on Aussie soil.

The Penrith champion is contracted until the end of the 2027 season, with the Chiefs set to enter the NRL in 2028.

Pain-free and boasting a more aggressive on-court approach, Alexander Zverev is the unlikely poster-boy for anyone seeking an upset in what is shaping as the most predictable of men's Australian Opens.

For the first time since 2013, the top four seeds have advanced to the semi-finals at Melbourne Park.

Carlos Alcaraz and two-time defending AO champion Jannik Sinner have divided up the last eight major titles between them, while evergreen Novak Djokovic has a lazy 24 slams to his name.

Down a set against world No.3 Alexander Zverev, American sensation Learner Tien looked exhausted and unsure.

“Don’t show him what you’re doing,” Tien’s coach Michael Chang warned him, calling out from the sidelines.

Falling victim to Zverev’s trademark monster aces, Tien was giving away his position when receiving. The 20-year-old heeded his coach’s advice and switched up his style and proceed to win a nail-biting tie-breaker and clinch the second set 7-6 (7-5).
