Former Wallabies captain and proud Papua New Guinean Will Genia is open to working with the PNG Chiefs – in any capacity – as he plots his next move after almost a decade in Japan.

After retiring last year, Genia will also finish up as skills coach with the Kintetsu Liners at the end of the Japanese season.

Panthers sign another halfback as Nathan Cleary weighs up whether he'll leave NRL club

The Penrith Panthers have reportedly signed a gun halfback out of the clutches of rugby union, and many are questioning whether they could be planning for life without Nathan Cleary. Panthers superstar Cleary is off contract at the end of 2027, meaning he'd hit the free agency market on November 1 this year unless Penrith re-sign him before then.

The Panthers are desperate to lock down the 28-year-old on a long-term extension, but Cleary has stated he's open to testing the open market and exploring what might be out there. The halfback has only ever played for the Panthers, but some have claimed he could earn $2 million per year on the open market.

Billy Slater explains the 'huge attraction' that could land PNG its golden goose

NRL legend Billy Slater believes the Papua New Guinea Chiefs will be an incredibly attractive option for Nathan Cleary, and could see him pocket an extra $2m per season.

This is because the player salaries in PNG will be tax free. If he earns $2.5m per season without tax, it would be the equivalent of a $4.5m salary on Aussie soil.

The Penrith champion is contracted until the end of the 2027 season, with the Chiefs set to enter the NRL in 2028.

Pain-free and boasting a more aggressive on-court approach, Alexander Zverev is the unlikely poster-boy for anyone seeking an upset in what is shaping as the most predictable of men's Australian Opens.

For the first time since 2013, the top four seeds have advanced to the semi-finals at Melbourne Park.

Carlos Alcaraz and two-time defending AO champion Jannik Sinner have divided up the last eight major titles between them, while evergreen Novak Djokovic has a lazy 24 slams to his name.

Down a set against world No.3 Alexander Zverev, American sensation Learner Tien looked exhausted and unsure.

“Don’t show him what you’re doing,” Tien’s coach Michael Chang warned him, calling out from the sidelines.

Falling victim to Zverev’s trademark monster aces, Tien was giving away his position when receiving. The 20-year-old heeded his coach’s advice and switched up his style and proceed to win a nail-biting tie-breaker and clinch the second set 7-6 (7-5).

Hearts: McInnes eyes more signings who can 'make the difference'

Derek McInnes has hinted at further January signings after Hearts secured a pre-contract deal for Uganda forward Rogers Mato to join in the summer.

The 22-year-old, who was subject of a rejected 350,000 euro offer from Hearts, has agreed a three-year contract to move to Tynecastle in the summer when his FK Vardar deal expires.

It remains to be seen if Premiership leaders Hearts will renew their attempts to buy Mato this month, but McInnes, who has already added Jordi Altena and Islam Chesnokov since the window opened, says the club are equipped to land players who can "make the difference".

Hearts agree pre-contract with Uganda forward Mato

Heart of Midlothian insist Rogers Mato will definitely join them this summer despite the Uganda forward's current club, Vardar, claiming they have accepted an £870,000 offer from Kansas City for the 22-year-old.

It comes a day after the Scottish Premiership leaders announced that Mato had agreed a three-year contract to join them as a free agent in July.

Now North Macedonian top-flight leaders Vardar have proclaimed that he instead "will play against Messi, Suarez, Giroud, Lloris, Busquets" in Major League Soccer.

They admit that Kansas and Mato have still to agree personal terms but say he can expect a monthly salary of £35,000, plus bonuses.
