‘Elephant in the room’ — Seibold is facing a brutal Sea Eagles call. It could be ‘career suicide’

The Manly Sea Eagles couldn’t have gotten to a more disastrous start to begin their 2026 campaign, but a crucial selection call could soon define the direction of the club as well as the tenure of head coach Anthony Seibold.

After suffering back-to-back losses including a disappointing performance against an injury-plagued Newcastle Knights, there have been many calls that Seibold should make several changes to the side.

Why the Manly Sea Eagles can turn it around and get back to the Top 4

The Manly Sea Eagles slump to a 0-2 start to the year, with their most recent outing against the Newcastle Knights being described as "one of the most insipid performances I have ever seen” by Fox Sports commentator Greg Alexander.

Despite showing promising signs in their opening match against the Canberra Raiders, there were glimpses of fatigue and unpolished areas amongst the Sea Eagles' outfit.

Then, against the Knights, a game they should have been up for, they failed to land a punch as the injury-depleted Newcastle outfit outclassed Manly in every area.

Reports surfaced on Monday morning surrounding the Sea Eagles holding an honesty session involving their poor start to the season, where it looks like Seibold faces a tough challenge to keep his head coach position alive.

As a Manly fan the whole Anthony Seibold era has been forgettable. Now it's time to bring it to an end

Over the last few years the only good thing about being a Manly fan has been sunny afternoons on the hill at Brookvale Oval.

Even that joy was sucked out of the place almost from the kick off on Sunday, with Luke Brooks making a schoolboy error that led to a Newcastle try from the first set of the game.

The Brooks moment – letting the kick off bounce over the dead ball line in blustery conditions – was a harbinger for the 79 minutes that followed, with the second half against an average side with $2.7 million of its salary cap in the sheds a particularly soulless effort from a team that lacks energy, spirit, cohesion, perhaps even will.

16! The huge issue facing All Star clash; Cowboys prop still under US visa cloud — NRL Daily

The annual pre-season clash between the Indigenous and Maori All Stars could be without as many as 16 players who competed in last year’s match, as squads are prepared to be announced next week.

Preparing for the upcoming World Club Challenge against Hull KR, Brisbane Broncos trio Jesse Arthars, Jordan Riki and Xavier Willison have been ruled out of the contest, as well as teammate Kotoni Staggs, who represented the Indigenous All Stars in 2024.

Latrell Mitchell facing heartbreaking blow as four Broncos players ruled out of NRL showpiece

Latrell Mitchell is facing the heartbreaking prospect of missing out on representing the Indigenous team in the NRL All-Stars game for the second year running. And a number of Broncos players have been ruled out of taking part in the annual fixture because they'll be in England for the World Club Challenge.

Mitchell has previously spoken of how significant the exhibition game against the Maori team is to the Indigenous community, and the NRL has agreed to keep it at the start of the year to give it more attention. But after an injury scare in pre-season training last week, it seems highly unlikely that South Sydney will allow Mitchell to play.

Towns facing temperatures above 45C as extreme heatwave blasts Australia

Those keen to exercise outside will need to get up early in the coming days as searing heat sweeps large parts of the country. (AAP: Bianca De Marchi)

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) is warning of a multi-day heatwave covering more than half of the country.

Temperatures are forecast to exceed 45C in some areas, sparking extreme fire danger.

Parts of southern Australia are forecast to hit temperatures above 45 degrees Celsius for multiple days in a row this week, as intense heat makes its way across the country.

It comes as the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) warns of what is likely to be the "most significant" heatwave south-eastern Australia has seen in six years.

Australians are being urged to heed fire warnings as temperatures soar across multiple states, bringing forecast conditions not seen since the Black Summer bushfires.

South Australia, Victoria, Tasmania, the ACT and NSW are set to swelter through oppressive temperatures into the weekend as a heatwave grips southeastern states, the Bureau of Meteorology said.

The conditions are set to be the worst since the 2019-20 summer bushfires that killed more than 30 people and burned through millions of hectares.

More than half of Australia is set to swelter in blistering temperatures in what is expected to be the worst heatwave since the devastating black summer bushfires.

The Bureau of Meteorology warned that dry, hot conditions would create extreme fire conditions across several states as temperatures topped 45C in parts of the country.

The senior meteorologist Angus Hines said that western and south-western NSW were likely to experience multiple consecutive days of hot conditions this week, with temperatures in Sydney to climb into the high 30s or low 40s on Saturday.

Australia’s black type system under fire amid threat of international downgrade

The peak breeding body in the industry’s heartland of NSW has called on the Racing NSW (RNSW) board to “stand down” amidst concerns that Australia could be demoted from Part I of the international Blue Book.

Thoroughbred Breeders NSW president Hamish Esplin made the call as Australia’s black type situation – a suite of NSW races given domestic upgrades that the Asian Racing Federation (ARF) has not recognised under the international pattern – continues to be at an impasse.

It comes as the ARF has also stated races including Randwick’s Sydney Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) and The Metropolitan (Gr 1, 2400m), and Perth’s Railway Stakes (Gr 1, 1600m) were eligible to be downgraded, based on ratings data.

Pattern’s last chance looms as Racing Australia board meets

A Racing Australia board meeting on Friday looms as a possible last chance to remedy Australia’s Pattern protocols and guidelines and head off action from the Asian Pattern Committee.

Racing Australia potentially faces its last chance to remedy its Pattern protocols and guidelines at a board meeting on Friday otherwise the country’s thoroughbred industry risks having the pivotal black-type process taken out of its own hands.

The Asian Racing Federation had given Racing Australia a mid-November deadline to respond to a list of concerns it holds about a series of black-type races and why a process used to demote and upgrade Listed and Group races was not in place.
