Fans vowed to boycott this season of Survivor. Did they make the right call?

You almost have to wonder if Network Ten saw the backlash coming. After the controversial sacking of longtime Australian Survivor host Jonathan LaPaglia last year, the theme of this new season, “Redemption”, feels a little on the nose.

“The want to right your wrongs. The need to make your mark. And to turn your greatest failures into your greatest success.” These first words, gravely purred by new host and past winner David Genat as the sun sets over a Samoan beach, are as much about the show as they are about the 24 new contestants.

Fans threaten to boycott after new Survivor host’s debut

Survivor Australia fans have threatened to switch off the latest season entirely after new host and former player David Genat made his controversial hosting debut on Monday night.

In June, it was announced long-time host and fan favourite Jonathan LaPaglia had been sensationally dumped after almost ten years at the helm — remarkably, before his eleventh season had even aired.

After much speculation as to who would replace him, model and Survivor all-star Genat — nicknamed the Golden God — was revealed as his successor.

Following the first episode of Australian Survivor: Redemption on Monday, fans were quick to blast the show, and even threatened to boycott it altogether over the polarising casting decision.

Australian Survivor premiere drops for 10

Australian Survivor has taken a hit from the tribe in its first outing with new host David Genat.

Last night the refreshed reality show drew 464,000 viewers in National TV Audience, down on its February 2025 number of 527,000 with former host Jonathan LaPaglia.

There would be other factors at play including the power of Married at First Sight at 1.87m (from the same production company ESA) -but Survivor was also against MAFS last February.

7:30 was high at 918,000 then Australian Idol (762,000) and an unscheduled episode of Australian Story (641,000) which was changed by ABC for “editorial” reasons.

Later Media Watch was 596,000 then Four Corners (585,000), a Winter Olympics Closing Ceremony repeat (359,000) 911 (322,000) and Matlock (139,000).

A baby macaque who has gone viral online has been a tourism drawcard for a zoo in Japan.

Punch the six-month old macaque took to a soft toy orangutan for company after being abandoned by its mother.

Hundreds of visitors have flocked to Ichikawa City Zoo to get a glimpse of the pair.

Dozens of fans have flocked to a Japanese zoo to catch a glimpse of a baby macaque who shot to social media stardom months after being abandoned by his mother.

Viral monkey Punch rejected by mother given stuffed orangutan

An abandoned baby monkey who broke millions of hearts online, after being spotted hugging an orangutan stuffed toy given to him as a substitute for his mother, has finally found comfort among his own kind.

Punch, a young Japanese macaque at the Ichikawa City Zoo in Japan, went viral after videos showed him dragging around and playing with a soft toy that zookeepers gave him.

During the first few months of his life, he struggled to bond with the other monkeys in his zoo's enclosure and had only the company of his human keepers and the stuffed toy to rely on. But recent videos show he's turning things around. He was given a hug by one monkey and was seen grooming others, a key part of macaque socialisation.

Intrigue seemed to be the overriding theme going into Sunday night's Transvision Vamp show at the King Street Bandroom.

After 35 years, the UK pop-rock sensation announced their reformation last year, with iconic frontwoman Wendy James at the helm alongside original bassist Dave Parsons.

The line-up was rounded out by new touring members, Thurston Moore collaborator Alex Ward (guitar), Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds' Jim Sclavunos (drums), and Matt Millership (keys).

Interestingly, Transvision Vamp chose Australia to host their first live shows since 1991, and Newcastle was the fourth gig of their comeback.

Review: Transvision Vamp @ The Triffid (Brisbane)

A rainy Thursday night in Brisbane didn't present any hurdles for the adoring throng.

Streams of fans poured in quicker than the clouds could release the rain. The neon reflections in the puddles created a scene like something out of a 1980s rock video. Same era rock-pop icons, Transvision Vamp always had a knack of getting a person off the couch and onto their dancing feet.

The eager crowd brought the same passion as they would no doubt have had during their younger years. The energy of teenagers with a small cassette tape deck stereo in the bedroom or parading at school 'civvies' days in their new Transvision Vamp t-shirt was palpable.

Wendy James returned to Sydney “dressed in pink” with her band Transvision Vamp and delivered a classic set of her 1980s pop punk classics including “I Want Your Love” and “Baby I Don’t Care”.

A packed Enmore Theatre reacted with enthusiasm, lead singer Wendy clearly enjoying the ride, the band was super tight and 80s nostalgia was back at the Enmore Theatre.

Fans outraged after Aussie company locks them out of concert: 'We are sorry'

Frustrated Australians are demanding answers after scores of would-be concertgoers were shut out of a major ticket sale. Across the country, customers say they were hit with a "restricted access" message before they could even check out — despite insisting they had done nothing wrong.

Last week, Australians flocked to Ticketek after European stars Robyn and Zara Larsson each announced shows to be held later in the year. But many missed out.

A spokesperson for Ticketek told Yahoo that, for the latter in particular, the platform experienced "exceptionally strong demand".

While technical hiccups during high-demand ticket sales aren’t unusual in Australia — and both Ticketek and Ticketmaster have faced criticism over similar issues in the past — many customers were furious after queueing for up to an hour, only to be locked out just as they reached the point of purchase.

‘A mess’: AFL fans angry over Optus Stadium ticket issue

Hundreds of footy fans were forced to watch the first moments of the AFL Origin blockbuster outside of Optus Stadium after a ticketing issue caused delays at gate entrances on Saturday afternoon.

More than 58,000 people descended on the stadium, ready to cheer on their home state as WA battled Victoria in the first State of Origin game in 27 years.

However, a recent change to ticketing meant the usually smooth process to enter Optus Stadium was anything but easy.

In January, Optus Stadium announced it would be rolling out a new enhanced digital ticketing system that involves near-field communication (NFC) technology and barcodes refreshing every 15 seconds.

NFL fans furious over Super Bowl commercial: ‘Should be illegal’

The Super Bowl had yet to kick off Sunday evening when some fans were already upset with one of the commercials.

Following the national anthem and before the start of the game, NBC cut to a commercial for “Scream 7″ — a horror film that is set to come out later this month.

Needless to say, people were not happy about an ad for a scary movie being shown as families tuned in for the Super Bowl.

"Showing a commercial for ‘Scream7′ at 5:30 pm right after the National Anthem and right before the Super Bowl kickoff should absolutely be illegal. So absurd,“ one fan said.

‘Scream 7’ Shouting To Mid $30Ms Opening At U.S. Box Office – Early Look

Paramount and Spyglass Media’s Scream 7 came on domestic tracking with a mid $30M opening in store when it arrives in theaters on Feb. 27. If those numbers hold, it could be the second highest opening in the 30-year-old franchise stateside after Scream VI‘s record $44.4M opening; that 2023 installment fueled by the Jenna Ortega Wednesday phenomenon.

Currently, Scream 7 is great with the 17-34 bunch and multicultural audiences across definite interest and first choice. Tickets don’t go on sale until Monday after the pic’s pre-Game Super Bowl spot. Advance ticket sales are typically a better indication of demand. Right now tracking has Scream 7 coming on higher than Scream VI, The Conjuring: Last Rites ($84M) and Final Destination: Bloodlines ($51.6M) in First Choice. There’s an argument that with lower grossing movies like Send Help and Iron Lung presently on tracking, most forecasts are inflated.

Two world No.1s who are chasing tennis history at the Australian Open capped a record-breaking opening day with straight-sets victories on Sunday night.

Aryna Sabalenka and Carlos Alcaraz did as expected in advancing to the second round, although their lower-profile opponents offered enough nuisance value to keep the Rod Laver Arena crowd – including Laver himself and Roger Federer – entertained.

Alcaraz can erase fellow Spaniard Rafael Nadal’s record as the youngest man, at age 22, to win a career Grand Slam if he claims this year’s Open.
