Sam Mitchell has backed his team to take it up to Fremantle in the qualifying final

HAWTHORN star Nick Watson will be ready to take on Fremantle in a blockbuster qualifying final at Optus Stadium, with coach Sam Mitchell pleased that his game-breaking goalkicker was able to be managed late in Sunday's win against West Coast.

Watson played limited minutes in the third quarter in Perth and was then benched for the entire final term after appearing to hurt his hand when he was shoved into the boundary fence by Eagles wingman Bo Allan just before three-quarter time.

Mitchell said there was no injury concern for Watson, who was prioritised for a rest after booting three goals and taking a stunning Mark of the Year contender in a brilliant performance.

REVEALED: Crows elimination final date and time confirmed

Find out all the details on date and time for our elimination final.

Adelaide will play its elimination final at Adelaide Oval on Saturday, September 5, at 7.05pm.

The AFL revealed the day and time of all finals fixtures on Monday, but the Crows’ opponent is yet to be confirmed, with two wildcard games still to be played this weekend.

Adelaide’s opponent will be the highest ranked team of the wildcard finals.

That could be either Melbourne, if the Demons defeat Carlton, or the winner of the Western Bulldogs v Collingwood wildcard clash, if the Blues come out on top.

Wildcard woes: Why the Crows are walking a tightrope

Will Crows make it through the wildcard round? (AAP: Matt Turner)

For a success starved fanbase it can fuel volatility and in a two-team town it's a pressure cooker.

On the eve of finals, the Adelaide Crows find themselves walking a wildcard tightrope.

If the Lions, Hawks, Demons or Cats fail to lose their final round match-ups, which they are heavily favoured to win, the Crows would have to face Carlton or the Western Bulldogs in a sudden death showdown that 12 months ago didn't even exist.

Since the AFL expanded to 18 sides, a 15-win season guaranteed you a Top 6 finish in 11 of the 13 full length seasons and only twice locked in an away elimination final.

GEELONG hosts Richmond under lights at GMHBA Stadium as the Cats prepare for another premiership tilt.

Geelong (14-8) was in serious danger of losing its grip on a top-six spot as North Melbourne made a blistering start before the Cats turned the tables to claim a rousing victory.

The Cats have now won five in a row and can avoid the wildcard round with a victory against the Tigers, while holding out hope that multiple other results fall their way to hand them a double chance.

Richmond (3-19) gave up some of the gains it had made with a win against West Coast, then a narrow loss to Adelaide as it was largely uncompetitive in a defeat to St Kilda.

Match Preview | Cats Jostling for Position with September Looming

Take a look ahead to Saturday's clash with Richmond, as the Cats conclude their 2026 home-and-away season

GMHBA Stadium is calling on what shapes as another monumental day for the Geelong Football Club, with the Cats set to conclude their 2026 home-and-away season against Richmond on Saturday.

Entering Round 24, Geelong sit in the top six on the ladder and are in the box seat to secure at least a home Elimination Final, which would importantly see them avoid the Wildcard Weekend and earn a bye week.

The Cats have found a rich vein of form at the right time of year, winning their last five consecutive games and looking for a sixth when they tackle Richmond, following a stirring comeback victory over North Melbourne last Saturday.

AUSTRALIAN STORY PRESENTER LEIGH SALES: Tilda Cobham-Hervey is one of Australia's most exciting young actors, with screen credits including Hotel Mumbai and Apple Cider Vinegar. When her mother Roz, an acclaimed dancer, was diagnosed with motor neurone disease, Tilda was inspired to step behind the camera and document her life story. When Roz expressed a dying wish, Tilda and her family committed to seeing it through.

PHOTOGRAPHER: So, we might start with one shot of Tilda please, and then we'll grab the whole family.

Roz Hervey had hours left to live. She asked her family to press record

As she looks down the barrel of the camera, Roz Hervey faces her imminent death with composure and determination.

"I am ready," the Adelaide-based dancer and artistic director states calmly as her husband Geoff Cobham and children Tilda and Huey Cobham-Hervey watch on.

"It is so, so important that people have the opportunity to die with dignity. I get to choose my beautiful surroundings, people who I love around me and dying in a calm, beautiful, and graceful way."

Having dedicated her life to making art that provoked thought and discussion, Roz, 58, approached her death with the same intention.

In the final hours of her life, Roz had one last creative mission to enact, one that motor neurone disease (MND) had not robbed her of being able to deliver. She asked her family to document her video message.

Race Around the World: grand final

Sunday marks the Race Around the World finale and all the Racers are back together in studio to hear who won the week.

Host Zan Rowe is joined by resident judge John Safran, original 1997 Race Around The World winner and Australian Story producer Olivia Rousset, legendary film critic Margaret Pomeranz and AACTA award winning filmmaker Danny Philippou.

One filmmaker will claim the ultimate prize of filming a project for the ABC.

Really enjoyed the show, but I am certain the voting by the judges is manipulated so it is close and comes down to the final episode. I understand personal preference but they clearly often don’t vote for the best films in order to keep the top few close in the vote tallies.

ST KILDA and Sydney open a huge Saturday of action, while Carlton and Brisbane close the night in a massive match for finals implications.

St Kilda continued to show it is a class above the sides in the bottom half of the ladder as it overcame a North Melbourne challenge then pulled away late to hang on to 10th place.

The Saints are well-placed to claim a wildcard spot with games to come against the Blues, Tigers and Suns but need to make the most of their last chance to take a big scalp this year before any finals campaign.

AFL Live: Ross Lyon name drops Chris Scott, again, as Saints buckle in for wildcard spot fight

We’ve seen two superb coast-to-coast goals today, and we’ve only just hit 2pm. Watch the clips below.

The first came from Sydney and took just 16 seconds by the time Nick Blakey brought the ball in from full-back at Marvel Stadium and Charlie Curnow poked it through the big sticks at the other end. Opponents St Kilda just watched in awe.

The second unfolded in Launceston and took just 18 seconds. Hawthorn’s Blake Hardwick unleashed a barrel from full-back and his teammates were able rush the ball forward before Will Day scored the goal. Not something that Roos coach Alastair Clarkson would have enjoyed watching.

TEAM: Unchanged lineup to face the Saints

Sydney will be hoping to make it back to back wins as they look to secure the all-important top two spot with just four fixtures remaining in the home and away season.

Sydney Swans Coach Dean Cox will take an unchanged lineup to Marvel Stadium to play St Kilda on Saturday afternoon. The Swans have the luxury of using the same 23 players who defeated the Giants by 51-points in the Sydney Derby last weekend. Sydney will be hoping to make it two wins in a row as they look to secure the all-important top two spot, just a month out from finals.

Messi dealt one final blow as Golden Boot farce exposed

Kylian Mbappe has capped off a stellar World Cup by claiming his second Golden Boot award.

The French sensation finished with 10 goals for the tournament, two clear of Lionel Messi, who was unable to close the gap in Argentina’s 1-0 loss to Spain in a tense tournament final.

He is the first ever player to claim a second Golden Boot, having previously won the award at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar.

Messi was well held by some miserly Spanish defending as Argentina remarkably finished with just three shots for the match – all of them coming deep into the second half of extra time.

Kylian Mbappe has moved past Lionel Messi for the career World Cup scoring record with 22 goals, netting twice for France in a 6-4 loss to England in the third-placed play-off match.

Mbappe finished this World Cup with 10 goals, two more than Messi in the race for the Golden Boot, which is awarded to the tournament's top scorer. Should he remain ahead of Messi after Argentina play Spain in Sunday's (5am Monday AEST) final, he would become the first player to win the Golden Boot twice.

Fox puts for the lead … but the ball dribbles off to the right. Not so straight after all. He walks off with par, shaking his head. Par for Burns, who now has to birdie the last in the hope of forcing a play-off. Fox just needs par on 18 … or birdie for the Claret Jug! What an Open! This is going right down to the wire!

Ryan Fox is forced to whip his ball out of the bunker while standing on the fairway, leaning in. He catches plenty of the ball and advances it up the hole. Good core strength, sir. He then wedges to ten feet, and will have a straight uphill putt for birdie and the outright lead. In the meantime, Sam Burns, having pulled his second to the left, can’t wedge close and he’ll have to make to do with par. He wears the look of a man who knows his race is run.

The second round of the British Open was quite chaotic as golfers fought to stick around for the weekend.

Lucas Herbert was the star of the day, shooting a 62 to skyrocket up the leaderboard and take a two-shot lead into Saturday. Herbert had a chance to shoot even lower, but he will certainly take the lead after 36 holes.

Meanwhile, Bryson DeChambeau appeared to end his round right behind Herbert, but he was assessed a two-stroke penalty for illegally improving his lie on a the fifth hole. That saga lasted a few hours, with DeChambeau pleading his case to rules officials, but the two-time U.S. Open champion is officially three-shots back at -5.

GOLD Coast (7-10) remains just one win outside the wildcard spots despite a heavy defeat to Adelaide that made it seven losses in a row and led to coach Damien Hardwick declaring its year "effectively gone".

The Suns have a huge task to turn around their season, starting against the Western Bulldogs on Sunday, with a misfiring midfield and doubts over their hunger as shown by losing the tackle count by more than 20 for the third consecutive week.

The inclusions of Ben Long and Dan Rioli should bring a bit of toughness back into the lineup, while a debut for tall forward Caleb Lewis will inject some vibrancy.

What they said: Bevo previews Gold Coast clash

The key talking points from Luke Beveridge’s weekly press conference.

“You sort of normalise that every week – you don’t go over the top talking up the opposition, but you’re always going down that track of anticipating that they’ll play their best game.

“Regardless of whatever negative publicity they’ve had, they’ve been on this journey trying to win every week like us. We know how determined they’ll be to change the storyline.

“Our angles and how we prepare as a group – every week is critical. To stay up every week is important.

“We had a really disappointing experience against the Swans a couple of weeks ago, and now to go up to the Gold Coast to play them on their home deck at People First Stadium, our coaches’ sponsor so we feel like we’re at home, it’s a huge challenge.”
