Erasmus backs Robertson to thrive after All Blacks exit

The respect remains between Springboks coach Rassie Erasmus and his former All Blacks counterpart, Scott Robertson.

Erasmus has reacted for the first time to Robertson’s departure and the pending appointment of his replacement before New Zealand’s tour to the republic in August and September.

The four-time World Cup winners had
a 3-1 record against Robertson’s All Blacks since the former Crusaders coach took the reins at the start of the 2024 season, including inflicting the biggest ever defeat on New Zealand – a 43-10 thumping in Wellington.

Robertson departed the role on January 16 and it was announced last week he will coach the Barbarians against Erasmus’ Springboks in his first job since leaving New Zealand.

World Baseball Classic: Former Chicago Cub Javier Báez among players left off Puerto Rico's WBC roster over insurance coverage

Francisco Lindor and Carlos Correa will also not play in World Baseball Classic

NEW YORK — Francisco Lindor, Carlos Correa and Javy Báez, a member of the 2016 Chicago Cubs World Series champion team, were left off Puerto Rico's roster for the World Baseball Classic over insurance coverage, while defending champion Japan entered a top group Thursday led by World Series champions Shohei Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto.

Cy Young Award winners Paul Skenes and Tarik Skubal head what appears to be the strongest pitching staff the United States has had in the six editions of the tournament. American position players include AL MVP Aaron Judge, the U.S. captain, along with Bryce Harper and Bobby Witt Jr. Mike Trout, the 2023 U.S. captain, was left off.

Phillies notes: Moore adds depth, Robertson retires, WBC ahead

Phillies Talk podcast co-hosts Spencer McKercher and Sean Kane analyze the team’s decision to “run it back” in 2026. They discuss the impact of re-signing veterans Kyle Schwarber and J.T. Realmuto, the addition of Adolis García, and whether the current roster is enough to chase a championship.

Like every winter, clubs stockpile minor-league deals. As the offseason drags on and free agents remain unsigned, those opportunities tend to become more creative.

The Phillies agreed to a minor-league deal with free-agent utility man Dylan Moore, according to Will Sammon of The Athletic. This contract stands apart from many of Philadelphia’s recent minor-league signings.

How do MLB teams view their players’ involvement in the World Baseball Classic?

These days, the debate is growing over players who confirm their presence at the World Baseball Classic (WBC) versus those who choose to stay in Spring Training. Multiple factors influence both decisions: representing your country and its flag, or preparing properly for a successful MLB season, which already has a grueling seven-month schedule.

After speaking with several organizations and their development departments, I’ll summarize here how the WBC is viewed within the system and what the approach of many organizations looks like.

Cases like Carlos Correa, Bo Bichette, and Tatsuya Imai will be analyzed.

UK PM orders inquiry into former US ambassador's ties to Epstein

An investigation will take place into the links between Britain's former ambassador to the US, Peter Mandelson, and late convicted sex offender, Jeffrey Epstein.

Documents released as part of the Epstein files suggest Lord Mandelson sent government briefing documents to the American financier in 2009.

Bank transfer documents also suggest Epstein sent cash to Lord Mandelson and his partner.

UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has ordered an urgent inquiry into the ties between London's former ambassador to Washington, Peter Mandelson, and the late US sex offender Jeffrey Epstein during the politician's time as a government minister.

Ex-PM asks cabinet secretary to investigate whether Mandelson shared market-sensitive information

The former prime minister Gordon Brown has asked the cabinet secretary to investigate Peter Mandelson’s apparent disclosure of highly sensitive government information to Jeffrey Epstein.

Mandelson was business secretary during Brown’s premiership, when he appears to have leaked an economic briefing to Epstein, who was serving a jail sentence at the time for soliciting prostitution from a minor.

The email, which had the subject line “Business issues”, was sent by Brown’s special adviser Nick Butler on 13 June 2009 after the global financial crisis. It detailed potential policy measures and suggested the government had saleable assets.

No more get out clauses, no more routes back to power. Finally, Peter Mandelson is on his own

Labour’s Prince of Darkness has always been reckless and greedy. The only question now is how his reckoning took so long

This is The End, Beautiful Friend, The End. There have been many Peter Mandelson resignations. Twice from the cabinet, once as the UK ambassador to Washington. But the announcement late on Sunday night that Mandelson was resigning from the Labour party somehow felt more final.

In the past, there had always been get out clauses. Unexpected routes back to the centre of power. Not this time. Somewhat late in the day, the establishment had closed every door. For the first time in decades, Mandy was truly on his own. You might ask what had taken everyone so long. Mandelson hadn’t exactly made much effort to hide his tracks.

A former High Court justice previously tapped by Labor to probe Scott Morrison’s multiple ministries is in the frame to lead the widely expected federal royal commission into the Bondi killings.

The potential appointment of Virginia Bell has been flagged by senior Labor figures in recent days and has already prompted pushback from some Jewish leaders in NSW, Bell’s home state, over their belief she might be too left-leaning, a claim the government and Bell’s backers in the legal fraternity will challenge.

The private worry expressed by Jewish leaders has complicated the choice for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese as he and his ministers work out details of a national probe he has resisted for weeks.

A royal commission into New Zealand's worst mass shooting could provide a blueprint for a federal inquiry into the Bondi massacre, legal experts say.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has softened his position on setting up a royal commission into the December 14 terrorist attack, where 15 people were killed and more than 40 injured, after previously rejecting calls for such an inquiry.
