Former blue-chip stocks plunge into ASX’s worst performers list

Just one year ago, CSL, Cochlear, WiseTech and Xero were among the 50 largest companies on the Australian sharemarket. Today, they are the worst-performing stocks on the benchmark index.

Together, these former heavyweights have haemorrhaged a massive $60 billion in market capitalisation, with the shares collapsing around 60 per cent over the last 12 months, taking the returns of Australia’s large-cap investors with them.

Former barrister Norman O'Bryan has been spared jail after he was caught trying to overcharge clients for fees.

It was part of a scandal that a judge once described as "one of the darkest chapters" in Victorian legal history.

O'Bryan, who hails from an esteemed legal family, will have to complete community service over the next four years.

In 2012, Norman O'Bryan offered to help investors and retirees who had lost their life savings through no fault of their own.

At the time, O'Bryan was a Victorian lawyer held in the highest regard.

Disgraced former silk Norman O’Bryan has avoided jail and will instead perform 600 hours of community service for trying to deceive his retiree clients into paying grossly inflated legal fees.

Once the blue-blood star of Melbourne’s legal world, O’Bryan pleaded guilty to attempted fraud for trying to gouge his class action clients, who were suing the collapsed lender Banksia Securities to recover some of their retirement savings.

Top silk Norman O’Bryan avoids jail for attempted overcharging fraud

Once-revered Melbourne barrister Norman O’Bryan will not spend a day in jail after being convicted of attempting to defraud a group of retirees he was representing out of millions of dollars.

The former Queen’s Counsel, from one of Victoria’s most esteemed legal families, was sentenced to a community corrections order of four years in the County Court on Thursday after he was caught overcharging members of the Banksia Securities class action, many of whom had already lost their life savings.

O’Bryan had faced up to five years in jail. He pleaded guilty to attempted fraud last month.

Japan's rugby board has suspended Eddie Jones over incidents of "verbal abuse" during an under-23 tour of Australia.

Jones was alleged to have levelled the abuse at match officials during the April tour.

Jones will be suspended as head coach until June 5, and will not be allowed to attend Japan's Test match against Italy on July 4.

Eddie Jones has been suspended from coaching Japan during its rugby union Test match against Italy in July after "incidences of verbal abuse" during a recent tour of Australia.

The Japan Rugby Football Union (JRFU) announced the disciplinary measures late on Wednesday after it found the Australian had breached the union's ethics and disciplinary regulations.

‘I regret my behaviour’: Eddie Jones suspended for referee abuse during Australia tour

Former Wallabies coach Eddie Jones says he “deeply regretted” his behaviour after being suspended for four matches and fined by the Japanese Rugby Football Union for abusing match officials during an under-23 tour of Australia last month.

The Japanese Rugby Football Union (JRFU) has reduced Jones’ lucrative salary and handed down a six-week suspension over what it described as “verbal abuse directed at local match officials”.

The 66-year-old will miss Japan’s opening Test of the upcoming Nations Championship tournament against Italy on July 4.

Jones will also be barred from involvement in two matches against Hong Kong on May 22 and 29, as well as a Japan XV fixture against the Maori All Blacks on June 27.

Japan ban head coach Eddie Jones for four games after ‘verbal abuse’ on Australia tour

Japan have suspended their head coach, Eddie Jones, for four games and cut his salary for “verbal abuse directed at local officials” during a tour in Australia. Jones will miss Japan’s Nations Championship opener against Italy on 4 July, the fourth game of his ban.

The Japan Rugby Football Union said the 66-year-old Australian violated their ethics and disciplinary regulations during a Japan Under-23 tour in April. “These measures relate to incidences of verbal abuse directed at local match officials,” it said.

“I accept the disciplinary action of the JRFU relating to the U23 Japan national team tour of Australia,” Jones said. “Some inappropriate remarks that I made caused discomfort to local match officials and other related parties.

Anderson stuns former club Newcastle with late equaliser as Forest step towards safety

For Nottingham Forest, just how precious might Elliot Anderson’s late equaliser at home to Newcastle prove? Vítor Pereira’s side knew they had to match or better West Ham’s result later against the Premier League leaders, Arsenal, and if West Ham fail to win at the London Stadium, then Forest’s mood will improve again and relegation fears will substitute. In a game devoid of quality, the Newcastle substitutes Jacob Ramsey and Harvey Barnes combined to seize Eddie Howe’s side a 74th-minute lead, but the former Newcastle youngster showed great endeavour to level.

For Forest, who Pereira warned had no time to wallow after exiting the Europa League on Thursday, the wait goes on to guarantee Premier League survival, but this point – and their vastly superior goal difference – could go some way to doing so. Anderson has been Forest’s best player this season by some distance and after playing a give and go with James McAtee, a Forest sub, the England midfielder burned into the six-yard box and sent an effort past Nick Pope from a tight angle. The likelihood is this was Anderson’s penultimate Forest game at the City Ground, the 23-year-old a target for Manchester City and Manchester United this summer.

Nottingham Forest 1-1 Newcastle: What Eddie Howe and Harvey Barnes said

Newcastle boss Eddie Howe, speaking to BBC Match of the Day: "Another game we should have won – we played pretty well. First half was a none event, neither team grabbed the game like they could have done.

"Second half we did do that, scored a great goal from our perspective and then was in the position to win the game. It's happened too many times this season where we haven't followed through and defended well enough."

On poor defending: "It contributes to a lot – the feeling when you are able to defend well and consistently keep clean sheets it stabilises you as a team and you feel you can see out a game. For whatever reason, a combination of factors in my opinion, we haven't delivered that and our confidence has been hit.

According to Love Rugby League, Smoothy's family is keen to return to Australia, and the hooker has approached the club about an early release.

Wakefield Trinity star Tyson Smoothy could be set to leave the club by the end of the season after expressing a desire to return to Australia, Love Rugby League can reveal.

Smoothy joined Trinity at the start of this season on a three-year contract as one of the biggest signings in Wakefield’s history.

"There were also times when I was overwhelmed by frustration and anxiety": Former US Open finalist announces retirement

US Open finalist and Asia's most decorated player Kei Nishikori will hang up his racket at the end of the season. The 36-year-old Japanese star revealed the decision on social media, saying it was made with a heavy heart.

"To be honest, I'd still love to keep playing," Nishikori wrote. "Looking back on everything up to this point, I can say with pride that I gave it my all."

Nishikori's peak came several years ago. In 2014 he became the first Japanese player to reach a Grand Slam final in New York, eventually losing to Croatia's Marin Cilic. He was also the first player from his country to break into the top 10, rising as high as world number four. His trophy collection stands at twelve tour titles and a bronze medal at the 2016 Rio Olympics.

Japan's Nishikori to retire at end of 2026 season

Japan's Kei Nishikori says he "gave it his all" after announcing he will retire from tennis at the end of the 2026 season.

The 36-year-old became the first Japanese player to break into the top 10 and achieved a career-high ranking of number four in the men's standings.

Nishikori, who won bronze at the 2016 Olympics in Rio, became the first player from his country to reach a Grand Slam singles final when he played Marin Cilic for the US Open title in 2014 – a match he lost in straight sets.

He has now dropped to 464 in the men's rankings having been hampered by injuries.

It had been announced in January that the broadcaster, who also had his own podcast, had been diagnosed with cancer and was unable to walk.

BBC radio DJ Andy Kershaw dies aged 66

DJ spent almost three decades working for corporation and was best known for Radio 1 show from 1985 to 2000

The broadcaster Andy Kershaw, best known for the BBC Radio 1 show he hosted for 15 years, has died aged 66, his family told the corporation.

His long career working for the BBC began in 1984 as host of the rock music show The Old Grey Whistle Test. He co-presented the corporation’s television coverage of Live Aid.

He revealed in January that he was undergoing cancer treatment after tumours that had been severely limiting his mobility were discovered in his spine last August.

Known for his eclectic taste in music, often featuring non-mainstream sounds on his weekly programme, he once described how his mentor, the producer and broadcaster John Walters, had influenced him, saying: “We’re not here to give the public what it wants. We’re here to give the public what it didn’t know it wanted.”
