    Fremantle has stamped its flag credentials with an epic second-half avalanche to overrun a brave Western Bulldogs in a 12-point victory.

    After a hard-fought first half where both clubs traded blows, the Dockers dominated in a 10-goal second half — three to Hayden Young including a Goal of the Year contender — in an almighty surge.

    The Dogs never gave up. They kicked three-straight goals in the fourth term to cut their deficit from 28 points to five in the dying minutes. But Shai Bolton delivered the dagger to sink the hearts of Dogs fans in a thriller at Marvel Stadium.

    England has been overtaken as Australia's top overseas country of origin for the first time since records began.

    People born in India made up the largest proportion of those born overseas for the first time on record, narrowly edging out English-born residents in 2025.

    New Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows that the country's estimated resident population on 30 June last year was 27.6 million, comprising 8.83 million people born overseas.

    India pips England to become Australia’s top overseas country of birth

    India has overtaken England to become Australia’s top overseas country of birth as the overseas-born share of the national population climbed to 32 per cent, the highest since 1891.

    Australia had 8.8 million overseas-born residents in 2025 compared to 18.8 million people born within the country, figures released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics on Wednesday show.

    The Indian-born population rose to 971,020 making it the largest group born overseas for the first time. The number of residents born in India has risen by 522,000 since 2015.

    Those born in England made up the second-largest group (970,950) with China third (732,000), New Zealand fourth (638,000) and the Philippines fifth (412,530).

    The ABS said the proportion of overseas-born people in Australia is approaching the all-time high of 32.4 per cent reached in 1891, when the national population was about 2.7 million.

    New group becomes Australia’s largest foreign-born population for first time

    An Asian country has surpassed England as the number one source of foreign-born residents in Australia for the first time.

    India has narrowly overtaken England as Australia’s largest estimated foreign-born resident group for the first time.

    New data released by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) on Wednesday revealed Indian-born people numbered an estimated 971,020 as at June 30, 2025.  

    The year prior, English-born residents led those born in India 963,560 to 916,330 respectively.  

    The Indian-born population has seen the largest increase in the population since 2015, while those born in England have slowly declined.

    Historical population data records show England had consistently formed the largest single cohort of foreign-born residents at any one time, at least since 1901.

    The 1995 film Braveheart stars Mel Gibson as William Wallace, a Scottish warrior who fights for his country’s independence before facing a grisly death at the hands of English executioners. The movie is certainly based on actual historical events, but is Braveheart a true story?

    The answer is complicated. William Wallace was a real person who fought for Scotland, and he was executed for high treason in 1305. And the conflict portrayed in the film, the First Scottish War of Independence, did rage for more than 30 years in the late 13th and early 14th centuries.

    However, Mel Gibson and his fellow producers took great liberties with Wallace’s story. Indeed, Braveheart has been called one of Hollywood’s most historically inaccurate movies.

    Celeste Rivas Hernandez grew up in Lake Elsinore, where she was a regular at the corner store down the street from her home. Neighbors still recall her strolling around with her backpack and long curly black hair atop her 5-foot-2 frame.

    Kayleigh Cortez, a neighbor, remembered the first time she saw Celeste three years ago.

    Carlton has confirmed young star Elijah Hollands has been admitted to hospital after the worrying scenes from Thursday night's game against Collingwood.

    The club asked that the privacy of Hollands and his family be respected.

    "While the Club acknowledges the public’s interest, it again asks that the privacy of Elijah and his family be respected," a statement read.

    "This request for privacy extends to the media to please not report or speculate on Hollands' location and private health information."

    The AFL and AFLPA are awaiting the findings of a club investigation, after Hollands suffered a mental health episode during the game.

    ‘There was a bit of chatter’: Pie aware of Hollands talk on field

    Collingwood defender Brayden Maynard was aware of talk on the field on Thursday night that Carlton’s Elijah Hollands was not right, but did not personally witness anything to raise an alarm.

    Maynard was not opposed to Hollands directly in the match but overheard conversations on the ground among teammates who were surprised at the Carlton player’s behaviour.

    Maynard’s comments follow a report from Age football journalist Caroline Wilson that Hollands had told a Collingwood player he’d been drinking.

    “I wasn’t aware of what was going on, but I think there was a bit of chatter happening and I didn’t pay much attention to it at all and if I did, I definitely would have said something,” Maynard told this masthead on Monday.

    Julien Leblanc Talks Full Circle Moment at UFC Winnipeg

    A veteran of the sport for over a dozen years, Julien Leblanc finally got the call to the big show. Having tried to just about every avenue to get that call, Leblanc had been close a time or two, but it ultimately hadn’t happened for him.

    “I’ve been trying to get on contenders for two, three years now – and it didn’t happen. I was actually cut from the Ultimate Fighter, the season that Robert [Valentin] was on it, and he went in final. I was like in the one of the last, I was not in the last alternate, but I was like waiting,” LeBlanc explained. “I had signed the contract waiting to know if I was flying out to Vegas to go and unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance.”

    If rage provided the connective tissue of season one of Lee Sung Jin’s series Beef, in which the enmity between Steven Yeun’s Danny and Ali Wong’s Amy spiralled ever more intensely from a minor altercation in a car park, season two is all about envy.

    It opens with a scene of smarmy self-satisfaction, with Josh Martin (Oscar Isaac) thanking the guests at a country club fundraiser for their contributions to saving the frogs, and paying special tribute to his interior designer wife, Lindsay Crane-Martin (Carey Mulligan), “who helped put this thing together”.

    Carey Mulligan and Oscar Isaac are a miserable couple who run a country club and get blackmailed in a rich v poor potboiler that has been done so much better before – not least in the stunning first series. What a shame

    We may have to start calling it White Lotus Derangement Syndrome. This is a condition spreading through the television commissioning system since Mike White debuted his brilliant anthology series five years ago, whereby drama is produced by setting poorer Americans alongside richer Americans in a location the latter choose to come to and the former can’t escape. In The White Lotus, they are the staff and guests at a variety of luxury resorts. In Sirens, the personal assistants of kabillionaires. In whatever Nicole Kidman is in they can be single mothers with children at assisted places at schools with the cashmere-clad elite, servants to expats nursing secret sadnesses in luxurious apartments, masseuses and other service providers at exclusive spa retreats, or exploited or sexually harassed nannies to people who think nothing of exploiting or harassing their nannies. In non-Kidman derivatives, the dogged blue collar viewer-avatars can also include cops, struggling novelists or academics. Unless the academic is a tenured professor, in which case the underdog becomes a sexually harassed student, who should probably unionise with the nannies.

    Warring couples keep 'Beef' juicy: Season 2 review

    Whiteness appears to be an official immigration credential in the eyes of the United States government.

    The Trump administration in late 2025 slashed the annual cap on refugee admissions to 7,500 for budget year 2026, down from the 125,000 cap set in 2024 by the Biden administration. That’s a historic low that will shut out thousands of global refugees from war and persecution, such as the victims of Taliban repression in Afghanistan or the Rohingya minority in Myanmar facing documented mass violence.

    The new refugee cap, however, will mostly benefit white South Africans, known as Afrikaners. The State Department is building infrastructure to process 4,500 refugee applications per month from Afrikaners, a pace that would easily exceed the administration’s global cap.

    Nearly 5,000 S.African Afrikaners take up Trump refugee offer

    Nearly 5,000 white Afrikaners have entered the United States under a programme launched by President Donald Trump nearly a year ago based on unfounded claims that the South African minority faces persecution, a document seen by AFP on Wednesday showed.

    The Trump administration has essentially ended refugee admissions as part of a crackdown on immigration but made an exception for South Africa's white Afrikaans community, descendants of the first European settlers.

    All of 4,499 people listed as resettled across 48 US states between October 1 last year and March 31 this year were South Africans except for three Afghans, according to the document from the US Department of State's Bureau of Population.
