4 takeaways: Knicks-Hawks Game 3 thrills to final seconds, as CJ McCollum takes over again

Trade acquisitions Jonathan Kuminga and CJ McCollum spark the Hawks to a go-ahead Game 3 victory over the Knicks.

CJ McCollum hits a go-ahead midrange jumper with 12.5 left on the clock and Atlanta seals a Game 3 win on the final possession.

ATLANTA – Game up for grabs, both teams have chances, both sides have capable heroes. So what happens?

Well: There’s a reason the Atlanta Hawks are leading their best-of-seven first round series with the New York Knicks. For the second straight game, they held all the fourth-quarter answers, and in this latest victory, all the closing-second solutions in a game that came down to a final possession.

Knicks-Hawks takeaways: CJ McCollum hits game-winner to give Atlanta 2-1 lead; KAT keeps starting slowly

As expected, the first-round series between the Knicks and Hawks has become must-see TV.

After initiating a 12-point lead after the first quarter of Game 3, Atlanta struggled to keep its distance. New York clawed its way back, leading to an enormously entertaining back-and-forth fourth quarter that saw the Knicks take the lead late. It all went down to the final seconds, with the Knicks failing to get off a shot in their last possession as the Hawks held on 109-108 to take a 2-1 first-round series lead.

These two squads are going blow for blow, and no lead appears safe. Both teams have the capability of getting hot from 3, making it entirely feasible to get back into games, and the collective group of raw talent is severely underrated, making this series ridiculously fun to watch. Not a lot of teams can, in theory, run their offense through both a lead guard and a big man, but that's the case here, even if Karl-Anthony Towns has been struggling in that department (we'll get to it).

Atlanta Hawks Release Intriguing Final Injury Report With No. 5 Seed at Stake

The Atlanta Hawks didn’t just release their final injury report — they may have revealed their playoff strategy.

With the No. 5 seed still at stake entering their regular-season finale against the Miami Heat, Atlanta listed multiple key players as out, a move that raises immediate questions about whether the team is prioritizing rest — or positioning — ahead of the postseason.

According to the official NBA injury report, Atlanta listed several core contributors as out, including Jalen Johnson (rest), CJ McCollum (rest) and Nickeil Alexander-Walker (toe), among others. The move effectively signals a strategic approach to the postseason — one that could influence the team’s first-round opponent.

Dyson Daniels Injury: Iffy for regular-season finale

Daniels is listed as questionable for Sunday's regular-season finale against the Heat due to a left great toe sprain.

Daniels may have picked up the injury during the Hawks' 124-102 win over the Cavaliers on Friday, when he played 29 minutes and finished with 13 points, 12 assists, 10 rebounds and two steals for his second triple-double of the regular season. If Daniels is unable to play Sunday, then Jonathan Kuminga (knee), Corey Kispert and Zaccharie Risacher would be candidates to enter the Hawks' starting lineup.

Game Preview: Knicks at Hawks, April 6, 2026

The Knicks head face a surging Atlanta team as they look to maintain their hold on the third seed in the East.

Tonight, the Atlanta Hawks (45-33) host the Knicks (50*-28) at State Farm Arena. New York sits third in the Eastern Conference, having won two straight to improve to 7-3 in their last 10. The Knicks need to stay sharp in their last road game of the season, especially with the Cleveland Cavaliers on their heels. Atlanta, meanwhile, might be the league’s hottest team, riding a four-game win streak and sitting fifth in the East.

The season series is split 1-1. The teams last met on January 2 in New York, where the Hawks pulled off a 111-99 victory. Onyeka Okongwu and Nickeil Alexander-Walker both scored 23 points for the winners. On the home team’s side, Jalen Brunson racked up 24 points while Ariel Hukporti snared 16 boards.

    Tiny Nick's Gambling Picks 04/06

NBA (0.5 Unit) NY Knicks @ Atlanta Hawks -1.5 (-110; Odds via Caesars): 6:00 PM CT on Peacock

The Hawks have flipped from short underdogs to short favorites in this one, and with good reason. To me, it’s simply a matter of which team has been doing well against quality competition, and Atlanta has a massive edge in that comparison. The Knicks haven’t beaten a playoff team in a month, as their 9-5 record has featured 8 wins against lottery teams and one against the Curry-less Warriors.

Atlanta on the other hand has gone 13-2 in the same stretch, with the only losses on the road against playoff teams. Otherwise they’ve posted a plus-17 point average margin in their wins, including plus-12.8 versus playoff teams. I trust where this Hawks team is much more than the Knicks right now, and I think the hot streak continues for one of the league’s better ATS teams.

Live: Giants, Hawks clash in Sydney before premiers open campaign in Brisbane

An injury-hit GWS sides open their season against Hawthorn in Sydney, before the Brisbane Lions unfurl their premiership flag against the Bulldogs.

The Giants have had a nightmare preseason with injuries and they will take on the Hawks without star players Tom Green, Josh Kelly, Sam Taylor and Aaron Cadman.

Last year's preliminary finalists Hawthorn will start favourites, but they will also be missing key personnel including Will Day and Cam McKenzie.

Later, the Lions will begin their tilt at a third-straight premiership at the Gabba when they take on Western Bulldogs under lights on Saturday night.

The spotlight will be on Lachie Neale, who gave up the Brisbane co-captaincy earlier this year amid his marriage breakdown.

Toby Greene has begun in the midfield for the Giants, with Jake Stringer botching a tough set shot for goal to register the first score of the game. The Hawks would have been buoyed by the strong mark taken by Mitch Lewis in response.

However, a 50m penalty against Massimo D’Ambrosio for being in the protected zone has gifted Jake Riccardi a goal from about 25 metres.

The weather is a big watch in Sydney, with dark skies now hovering. Rain and possible lightning have been forecast. We’ll see.

Key forward's 'tricky' injury adds to Giants' woes ahead of Hawks clash

Adam Kingsley isn't in panic mode over GWS's injury list but wasn't expecting to lose Aaron Cadman for the season starter

RISING Greater Western Sydney forward Aaron Cadman is managing a "tricky" pelvis issue and won't be pushed to return ahead of time, despite the club's star-studded injury list.

Cadman didn't play in the official practice match against Sydney, and then trained a few days later, whereupon the injury flared again. On Tuesday, he was listed as being out for two weeks with a pelvic problem.

The Giants' injury list is littered with first-choice players, including Toby Bedford (hamstring), Leek Aleer (groin), Brent Daniels (hamstring), Sam Taylor (hamstring), Darcy Jones (knee), Josh Kelly (hip) and Tom Green (ACL).

You have reached ESPN's Australian edition. Stay on current site or go to US version.

ATLANTA — Hawks forward Jalen Johnson left Tuesday night's 119-98 win over the Washington Wizards with a left hip flexor injury.

Johnson was injured in the first quarter and ruled out after being evaluated by the training staff.

"There was enough there not to send him back in the game," coach Quin Snyder said.

Johnson, who earned his first All-Star Game berth this season, will be re-evaluated before the Hawks face the Wizards again Thursday to complete back-to-back games in Atlanta. It's not known if he will miss any additional playing time.

Hawks' Jalen Johnson: Won't return Tuesday

Johnson won't return to Tuesday's game against the Wizards due to a left hip flexor injury. He'll finish with five points (2-4 FG, 1-2 FT), three rebounds and two steals across six minutes.

Johnson sustained the hip injury in the first quarter and was initially deemed questionable to return before being ruled out shortly thereafter. With the star forward unavailable, Jonathan Kuminga and Mouhamed Gueye are candidates for increased playing time the rest of the way. Johnson's next opportunity to play will come in Thursday's rematch versus Washington.

Jalen Johnson Ruled Out For The Rest Of Tonight's Game vs Washington

The Atlanta Hawks are looking for their second straight win and third in their last four games since returning from the All-Star Break and they are hosting the Washington Wizards tonight.

In the first quarter of tonight's game, Hawks star forward Jalen Johnson left the game, quetionable to return with a left hip flexor, but he has now been ruled out for the rest of the game.

Jalen Johnson (left hip flexor) will not return to tonight’s game.

The Hawks should be fine without Johnson for the rest of tonight's game against one of the worst teams in the league, but it will be worth monitoring how this impacts him going forward. The Hawks host the Wizards again on Thursda and then their next game is a home contest against Portland.

Blazers Host CJ McCollum, Atlanta Hawks Tonight

The Portland Trail Blazers look to avenge their blowout loss to the Golden State Warriors in their next matchup against Jalen Johnson and the Atlanta Hawks tonight. This will be the first of two meetings against Atlanta this season, and the first time in eight years that the Blazers will face a Trae Young-less Hawks squad.

There are three certainties in life: Death, taxes, and the Hawks being in the Play-In. Following an offseason trade for Kristaps Porzingis, and the signings of (former Blazer) Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Luke Kennard, pundits and fans had high hopes for the new-look Hawks. Led by burgeoning forward Jalen Johnson, the Hawks seem poised to escape their eternal relegation to the 7-10 seeds. So far, fate remains victorious. In 42 games, the Hawks are 20-22, marred by continued injuries to the recently-traded Young, and the chronically-battered Porzingis.

    Tiny Nick's Gambling Picks 01/15

NBA (0.75 Unit) Atlanta Hawks -4 @ Portland Trail Blazers (-110; Odds via Fanduel): 9:00 PM CT on KUNP

It’s obvious that the Hawks are still adjusting to life without Trae Young while adding CJ McCollum into the fold. They’ve had two wildly different results the past two games, looking amazing in Golden State and then getting blown out by the Lakers on Tuesday night. But that puts them in a good bounce back spot here against a Portland team that’s very shorthanded.

The Blazers should be without Deni Avdija again tonight, and likely Jerami Grant as well, forcing a lineup construction that has not gone well for them. Portland really struggles to score without Avdija, and the excellent defensive backcourt of Atlanta will make that even tougher. This is already a massive shooting mismatch both overall and from deep, plus the Hawks are one of the league’s best ATS teams in road games, so I’ll lay the short number expecting a big bounce back performance.

Best bets for NBA, NHL, college basketball games on Thursday, Jan. 15

It's been nearly nine years since the Atlanta Hawks posted a victory in Portland. Head coach Quin Snyder is hoping this is the year the drought finally ends.

The Hawks (20-22) conclude their four-game road trip when they visit the Moda Center to take on the Portland Trail Blazers (19-22) at 10 p.m. ET on Thursday. Atlanta has lost its last eight contests in "The City of Roses," last winning when it outlasted the Trail Blazers 109-104 in overtime on Feb. 13, 2017.

After beginning their trek with triumphs over the Denver Nuggets and Golden State Warriors, the Hawks were trounced 141-116 by the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday. Portland is looking to avoid a third consecutive setback after losing to the New York Knicks 123-114 at home on Sunday and the Warriors 119-97 on the road two days later.

Knicks 128-125 Hawks (28 Dec, 2025) Game Recap

ATLANTA — — Karl-Anthony Towns scored a season-high 36 points with 16 rebounds, Jalen Brunson had 34 points and the New York Knicks survived Atlanta’s late comeback attempt to beat the slumping Hawks 128-125 on Saturday night.

The Hawks lost their sixth straight to wrap up a crushing 0-5 homestand. Atlanta is 5-11 overall at home.

Towns made 17 of 18 free throws while helping the Knicks take a dominant 56-38 advantage in rebounds.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker, who scored 25 points, had a steal and basket with 48 seconds remaining to give the Hawks a 125-124 lead. OG Anunoby made two free throws as the Knicks reclaimed the lead and, after he stole the ball following Trae Young's pass, padded the lead with two more free throws.

Atlanta Hawks have 'explored' path to trade for Mavericks' Anthony Davis

Dallas Mavericks star forward/center Anthony Davis has been at the center of trade talks all season. Cooper Flagg has blossomed faster than anyone expected, despite being the first overall pick, and that has the team needing to prioritize his timeline. This is the last year that the Mavericks control their first-round pick, and Anthony Davis isn't getting any younger, cheaper, or more durable.

Trying to find teams interested in Anthony Davis may be a challenge, though. He's playing at a really high level, especially recently, but Rich Paul (his agent, CEO of Klutch Sports) will want an extension for him, and he's already making a lot of money for someone who can rarely stay healthy.

Would a move for Davis work for Raptors?

Mavericks hear from Hawks, Raptors, Bulls on Anthony Davis, but only at ‘bargain’

Several teams have checked in on Mavericks star Anthony Davis, but they are doing so with a clear hope that the price comes down.

According to Jake Fischer of Bleacher Report, the Hawks, Raptors, and Bulls have all made inquiries with Dallas about Davis. The common theme is that those teams would like to land him “at a bargain.”

“Teams like Atlanta and Toronto and Chicago that have called about Anthony Davis, they want to get him for cheap,” Fischer said. “That’s not what Dallas has any interest in doing. They want to sell him for the type of value Nico Harrison thought he was worth when he traded for him for Luka Doncic.”

Hawks' Nickeil Alexander-Walker: Heading back to bench

Alexander-Walker is not in the starting lineup for Sunday's game against the Bulls, Brad Rowland of the Locked On Podcast Network reports.

Trae Young (knee) is back in the lineup to claim his usual spot in the first unit, which unsurprisingly sends Alexander-Walker to the bench. Over four appearances off the bench this year, Alexander-Walker has averaged 18.3 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.0 steals and 1.0 blocks in 31.1 minutes per game.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker drops 28 points Thursday

Nickeil Alexander-Walker scored 28 points (11-18 FG, 4-9 3PT, 2-2 FT) to go along with eight rebounds and two assists in the Hawks 133-126 loss against the Hornets.

Alexander-Walker was third on the team in minutes played despite coming off the bench. He should continue to see the opportunity while Trae Young is on a minutes restriction in his return.

Nickeil Alexander-Walker News: Back in starting lineup

Alexander-Walker is in the Hawks' starting lineup against the Spurs on Friday, Brad Rowland of the Locked On Podcast Network reports.

Alexander-Walker has started 22 of 26 regular-season games thus far, and despite coming off the bench against the Hornets on Thursday, he still finished with 28 points, eight rebounds and two assists over 34 minutes. With Trae Young (injury management) not playing in the second leg of the Hawks' back-to-back set, Alexander-Walker will be reinserted into Atlanta's starting lineup for Friday's home tilt.
