Pistons vs. Heat preview: Detroit looks to stop the bleeding vs. surging Miami

Unclear if Cade Cunningham will suit up for the Pistons against the Heat

The Detroit Pistons enter tonight’s early evening tipoff against the Miami Heat at the lowest point of its season. Perhaps it is great that a low point can consist of uneven play, a winning record in the past 10 games, and the year’s longest losing streak consisting of a paltry three games. But serious Pistons watchers understand that the team is facing several serious issues right now. Things they need to figure out, and fast. Unfortunately, after Saturday’s embarrassing loss to the Brooklyn Nets, Detroit now faces a comfortable and surging Heat team. Miami has won seven of nine and is in the middle of a comfy eight-game stretch that features just one road game — a quick jaunt to Charlotte, where they beat the Hornets.

Detroit vs Miami Picks: Side and Total Betting Predictions

RBD analyzes Detroit in a Game two B2B spot and uncovers betting value on both the side and total in the Pistons vs Heat matchup.

Unfortunately I have no T1 Overs (37-21, 63%) to play today, but I have some interesting numbers on the Pistons/Heat game.
Detroit heads to Miami to play in the Game two of B2B’s spot.
And I’m putting my money down on a side and total in this one.

Detroit is 8-1 SU in Game two’s so they’ve obviously got a good bench that can help spread the minutes around so the starters don’t get tired from being overplayed.

Dewana Star Leads the Way into Sportsbet Emerald Final

Dewana Star has stamped himself as the one to beat in Sunday’s Sportsbet Emerald final after recording the fastest time in today’s heats at Healesville.

The speedster stopped the clock in 16.23 seconds over the 300 metres, securing likely favouritism for the final after drawing box two.

Dewana Star was the fastest qualifier from box one in his Sportsbet Emerald heat.

Straight-track specialist Catch Some Rays also impressed, winning his heat in 16.27 seconds to qualify as the second-fastest runner. He will jump from box eight in Sunday’s final.

The Sportsbet Emerald field is determined by the eight fastest times recorded across the eight heats, meaning a greyhound can win its heat but still miss out on the final if its time is not quick enough.

Grizzlies' Scotty Pippen Jr., Heat's Myron Gardner ejected after scuffle

A matchup between the Miami Heat and Memphis Grizzlies was nearing an end Feb. 21 but not before some late-game fireworks.

Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr. and Heat guard Myron Gardner were ejected with 1:55 left in the fourth quarter after a scuffle that carried over into the corner near the 3-point line.

Pippen was forcefully hit in the back by Gardner after making a 3-pointer with 1:59 left in the fourth, but no foul was called. After lying on the floor and then complaining to the officials, Pippen rushed up the floor and charged toward Gardner.

The players fell and had to be separated by teammates and staff.

Another NBA fight breaks out, scuffle in Miami Heat win vs. Grizzlies

On a night where everyone is probably awaiting to tune in to the Ryan Garcia and Mario Barrios fight, the NBA had another fight night of its own.

A scuffle broke between the Memphis Grizzlies and Miami Heat with 1:55 left the contest as the Heat led 134-113. The Heat went on to win, 135-120.

Grizzlies guard Scotty Pippen Jr. charged at Heat forward Myron Gardner after Pippen had just missed a shot and was walking back and never saw Gardner coming as he knocked Pippen down with a push in the back, setting an off-ball screen.

Pippen walked Gardner down, pointed at him and apparently said something before shoving him in the chest and face. Gardner retaliated, grabbing Pippen, as they pulled each other to the floor near courtside seats.

Grizzlies' Scotty Pippen: Ejected in loss to Miami

Pippen was ejected late in the fourth quarter of Saturday's loss to the Heat after engaging in a fight with Myron Gardner, Drew Hill of The Daily Memphian reports.

It seemed Pippen was the one who went straight at Gardner, so it wouldn't be surprising if he receives a fine or a suspension in the coming days. Pippen ended the game with 18 points (7-15 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 1-2 FT), four rebounds, six assists, two steals and a block across 21 minutes off the bench.

    Excessive heat

Why it matters: A suite of new analyses has found that regulations that provide basic safeguards like water, shade and rest for workers in hot conditions can help lower the numbers of heat-driven injuries, workers' compensation claims and even deaths.

How have regulations helped? The most recent study, published in December in the journal Health Affairs, looked at California's rule protecting outdoor workers from heat, the oldest such rule in the country. Researchers found the regulations led to at least a 33% drop in heat-related deaths among workers after 2010 — an estimate of several dozen lives saved each year.

Read on … to learn more about the ways the government can protect workers.

Rising Heat Means More Vigilance in Keeping Workers Safe

The best of R&I and around the web, handpicked by our editors.

White papers, service directory and conferences for the R&I community.

Extreme heat is on the rise in the United States, challenging the ability of many industries and  employers to keep workers safe, especially in high risk industries with considerable amounts of outdoor work, such as construction.

While we can expect unabated climate change to continue to pose a threat, we do have a playbook to mitigate these risks. Devoting the resources to create a plan, and more importantly, implementing the plan, can quite literally save lives on the jobsite.

Jenny's son died after working in extreme heat. She believes a policy could have saved him

Jenny Newport's son, Glenn, died 13 years ago from working in extreme heat. She believes a heat policy could have saved him.  (ABC News: Crystalyn Brown)

Jenny Newport's son, Glenn, died while working on a coal seam gas pipeline construction project.

Temperatures at the construction site where he was working had exceeded 40 degrees Celsius that day.

Ms Newport is calling for state and federal governments to implement heat policies to help protect workers.

It has been 13 years since Jenny Newport's son died from extreme heat while on a worksite in Queensland, and she believes not much has changed.

Ms Newport had hoped there would be an effective heat policy for every worksite across the state after her son's death.

    Heat's Kel'el Ware: Won't play Tuesday

Ware (hamstring) has been ruled out for Tuesday's game in Sacramento.

Ware is dealing with some tightness in his hamstring, so the Heat will err on the side of caution with their second-year center on the second leg of a back-to-back set. His absence will open up minutes for Nikola Jovic. For now, Ware should be considered questionable for Thursday's game in Portland.

Kel'el Ware now questionable for Heat tonight at Sacramento with tightness in his right hamstring.

Ware played 18 minutes in Monday’s loss to the Warriors. His fantasy upside has been limited when healthy in a decreased role.

    HEAT SETTLE ON SIXERS SQUAD

The Brisbane Heat has added rising left-arm paceman Oli Patterson to its squad for tomorrow night’s must-win KFC Big Bash League match against the Sydney Sixers at a sold-out Gabba.

Patterson joins the squad of 14 to prepare for tomorrow's season-defining game that will see the victor finish fourth and progress to the BBL|15 Finals next week.

The 20-year-old played in their Coffs Harbour clash against the Sixers earlier this month, taking two wickets including that of Pakistan star Babar Azam, as the Heat almost won a thriller.

Brisbane come into tomorrow's return bout with the Sixers fresh from its final over heroics against the defending champion Hobart Hurricanes earlier this week when they successfully defended their total of 160 thanks to a brilliant over from Pakistan quick Zaman Khan.

Big Bash League 2026 results: Mitchell Starc, Steve Smith and Sam Curran put Sydney Sixers in play-offs

Sydney Sixers secured second-place in the Big Bash League and their spot in Tuesday's qualifier match with a five-wicket win over Brisbane Heat.

Heat, who could have qualified for the play-offs at Sixers' expense with a win, finish fifth despite scoring 171-9 in a first innings where Mitchell Starc took 4-35.

Sixers batters Steve Smith and Sam Curran both made half-centuries and put on 60 for the fourth wicket, with their side passing their target in the penultimate over of the innings.

Nathan McSweeney top-scored for Heat after they were put into bat, hitting an unbeaten 69 from number three.

McSweeney added 48 with Michael Neser (35) for the seventh wicket, but saw other partners fall cheaply with no other Heat batter passing 20.

The Brisbane Heat have maintained their squad for tomorrow night’s KFC Big Bash League clash with the Adelaide Strikers at the Gabba.

The Heat have added left-arm paceman Oli Patterson to their squad of 14, after he missed Brisbane's loss to the Sydney Thunder at Manuka Oval in Canberra earlier this week.

The Heat’s last Gabba match was the memorable record-breaking victory over the Perth Scorchers last week when the home side successfully completed a record run-chase.

Tomorrow night’s game features the return of former Brisbane Heat frontman Chris Lynn, now with the Strikers.

Paceman Xavier Bartlett will again captain the side after taking over from the injured Nathan McSweeney (ankle) against the Thunder.

Extreme heat, humidity and storms ahead of Christmas Day

Australia is getting a smorgasbord of extreme weather over the next few days, featuring heat and humidity, severe thunderstorms and tropical storms.

It all comes ahead of a Christmas Day scorcher in the west, with mild to cooler conditions forecast for the south and east, and possible storms in the north.

There are still five days to go — meaning there's plenty of time for the forecast to change.

Figures from the Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) show that five days out, the temperature forecast is within 2 degrees Celsius of the actual temperature about 75-79 per cent of the time.

Wildly different weather is on the way across Australia for Christmas Day, as a clearer picture emerges of the forecast for celebrations on Thursday.

The Bureau of Meteorology has tipped Perth, at 41C, and Brisbane, 35C, to swelter through the hottest conditions of Australia’s capital cities.

Further south, residents in Melbourne and Hobart may have to break out their winter woollies with forecast tops of 17C and 16C respectively.

“If Melbourne only reaches 17C, it will be Melbourne’s coldest Christmas Day since 2006,” senior meteorologist Jonathan How told AAP. “Quite the extremes across both ends of the country.”

New Christmas forecast for Perth sure to give you a meltdown

If you thought earlier forecasts for Christmas Day were hot, then the latest outlook is sure to give you a meltdown.

An absolutely sizzling 41C is now predicted to be the order of Christmas Day in Perth, making the beach and back yard pools massively popular.

The extreme heat will come on the back of a warm night of 26C, with the mercury on Christmas Eve hitting 39C.

A few weeks ago, Christmas in Perth had been forecast to be a lovely 24C. This then changed to 39C. Then 40C. And now 41C.

Thankfully, it cools down in the city on Boxing Day, with a minimum of 23C followed by a comfortable 30C maximum.
