How it came about: Dusty’s footy return confirmed

Richmond champion Dustin Martin will return to a local footy fielding 2026.

Channel 7’s Mitch Cleary is reporting that the three-time Norm Smith Medallist will suit up for the Port Douglas Crocs in early May.

Martin last played competitive footy in August 2024 – his final game with the Tigers.

It was reported in the Herald Sun in February that Dusty was on the verge of signing with Yarrawonga in the Ovens & Murray League but the Pigeons said at the time they hadn’t yet spoken to him.

However, Port Douglas will be rocking on May 2 when the Crocs host the South Cairns Cutters at the Port Douglas Sporting Complex.

How Melbourne ended up with the biggest comedy festival in the world

"We were kids who weren't trying to do or be anything," the Doug Anthony All Stars' Paul McDermott (centre) says. "It was glorious." (ABC Archives)

Paul McDermott doesn't remember a lot from the first Melbourne International Comedy Festival (MICF) 40 years ago, where he performed as part of the now-legendary musical comedy group, the Doug Anthony All Stars.

He has only vague recollections of the troupe's early ad-lib-heavy shows, like "performing in the middle of Victoria Parade, where the trams go through".

But it'd be hard to forget falling backwards onto a beer bottle mid-gig.

Denise Scott is 70, and she’s been telling jokes for a living for longer than she cares to remember. Or can remember, for that matter.

Asked by fellow stand-up Nath Valvo how many times she had performed at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival as the pair shared hosting duties for the launch of the 40th edition on Monday, she drew a blank.

“I have no idea,” she said. “I don’t remember any of the titles of the shows. Most of the material is gone, never to be seen again. But, you know, that’s what it’s about – it’s about trying, and never ever giving up.”

The 40th anniversary of the comedy festival billed as the biggest in the world has brought back some memories for comedy legend Denise Scott.

While Scott said she can't remember how many shows she's done at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival, or what any of them were called, there is one that sticks in her mind.

It's the time her disapproving mother missed seeing her rendition of the Rage Against The Machine's song Killing In The Name, because the staging collapsed.

After Australia cast its votes for the first time this season, the competition narrowed again with two contestants departing the stage as the Top 10 lineup was confirmed.

Monday night’s episode saw Lily Grace Grant and Sophie Poidevin eliminated after landing in the bottom four alongside Harry Lamb and Kesha Oayda following the performance shows.

Two contestants were already safe, with Simela Petridis and Wanwue Tarpeh securing their places in the Top 10 after being sent straight through following the performance rounds.

How Nissan is looking to beat BYD at its own game in the ute space

Nissan sees the future of the Australian market as being dominated by hybrids, which includes four-wheel drive utes.

Nissan’s local boss is ‘passionate’ about the prospects of the Frontier Pro PHEV ute for the Australian market, as the brand plans for a market dominated by hybrid powertrains.

And it could take on the BYD Shark 6 in the Australian market, along with the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV and Ford Ranger PHEV.

Andrew Humberstone, Nissan’s managing director for the Oceania region, wouldn’t yet lock in the Frontier Pro for the Australian market – and decline to confirm if the vehicle's arrival has already been shared with dealers – but told Drive that news is due soon.

2027 Nissan Frontier Pro could arrive this year

We’re just months away from an official announcement on the local future of the 2027 Nissan Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid ute, with departing Nissan Oceania managing director Andrew Humberstone revealing it could be here sooner than expected.

Speaking to carsales today at the national media launch of the all-new D27 Navara, Humberstone said many of the major boxes had been ticked on the Frontier Pro’s local business case and that the details were being wrapped up now.

“We’re hoping to have it sooner than originally planned, but it’s all being finalised as we speak and hopefully, within the next two months, you should get a statement from the new incumbent.”

Nissan’s answer to the BYD Shark 6 will be confirmed for Australia next month

The plug-in hybrid Nissan Frontier Pro dual-cab ute will be officially locked in for the local market in two weeks.

Nissan Australia revealed the news to its dealers last November, but Nissan Oceania managing director Andrew Humberstone has now confirmed the all-new Frontier Pro plug-in hybrid dual-cab ute will be officially announced for the Australian and New Zealand markets next month.

Speaking to media at this week’s launch of the new Mitsubishi Triton-based Navara ute, Mr Humberstone said Nissan Australia will announce a new ute “in two weeks”.

When asked whether he was referring to a hybrid ute, Mr Humberstone said: “Yeah, it will be”.

The redemption arc for Sam Kerr’s Matildas is not quite complete, but making the final of the women’s Asian Cup on Saturday night in Sydney is, in many ways, as good as a win.

Australia are outsiders for the match against Japan. The Matildas have jagged their way to the final in spite of being dominated in their last three matches.

A last-minute draw with South Korea was as bad as a loss, because it put Australia in a quarter-final with North Korea, described by Joe Montemurro as the best team in the tournament.

IT HAD been a tough old debut season in the coach's chair for Dean Cox.

tom barrass attacked the aerial contest with courage but landed heavily as Sydney’s new-look forward mix produced a frantic start in round two at the MCG; Malcolm Rosas jnr and Charlie Curnow combined for a pair of early goals, and the Swans pushed through the corridor to relentless effect. The clash forms part of round two of the 2026 Toyota AFL Premiership Season, played at the MCG on Thursday night. The sequence left the contest lively and raised immediate questions about bodies and momentum for both teams.

Sydney’s recruits wasted no time setting the tone: Malcolm Rosas jnr and Charlie Curnow combined for two quick goals in a fast opening period. The Swans repeatedly took the game on through the corridor and found targets, including a finish to Justin McInerney that capped an aggressive passage. Across their opening two matches Sydney sit 2-0 and have passed 100 points in each game, even while Curnow has contributed just three of the side’s 35 goals this season.

'That's tournament football': Montemurro's Matildas through to semis

It was 100 minutes of tension. Of hunched shoulders and sick stomachs. There were close calls and moments of unbridled joy that brought blessed relief.

In the end, Australia defeated North Korea 2-1 and booked their ticket to the Women's Asian Cup semifinals and the 2027 Women's World Cup.

Were the Matildas good? Not really. Was it a convincing win? No. But football is weird. They got the goals they needed and, for the most part, kept North Korea's multiple chances out of the back of the net.

The fight for the English crown is beginning to look a little like a runaway.

After FA Cup fixtures took center stage last weekend, Premier League action returned with a bang on Saturday. League-leaders Arsenal looked in danger of dropping points to Everton, but two late goals from Viktor Gyökeres and 16-year-old Max Downman secured all three points for the Gunners.

Last week, an American reality-show contestant posted footage of himself in the recovery room of a hospital after an operation. He had tubes in his nose and those woozy, cartoonish eyes of post-anaesthesia.

Once that sunk in, the next impulse was, “How did Man City do?”

It has been like this for a while now, as it always is when two heavyweights are slugging it out at the top of the table. Try as everyone might to focus only upon themselves and what they can control, the knowledge that a rival team are on a parallel course is permanently relevant. Dominant thought: us.
