    Los Angeles: When the United States’ team walked off at halftime in their last encounter with the Socceroos, their coach – the highly regarded and usually mild-mannered Mauricio Pochettino – was fuming.

    It was 1-1, but the Argentinian lambasted his team, saying the Australians were more physical and the Americans needed to stop letting themselves get pushed around in the scrappy friendly in Colorado last October. He demanded that the US players start standing up for themselves.

    The US went on to win 2-1, and it is expected to be a similarly fiery World Cup encounter in Seattle on Saturday (AEST), where victory for either side could see them wrap up top spot of Group D, depending on other results.

    Juneteenth reminds us of Black Americans’ long struggle for education following end of slavery

    The abolitionist and writer Frederick Douglass is known for many things, but perhaps among the most significant is his views on education’s relationship to slavery. Douglass himself was born into slavery in Maryland in 1818.

    Douglass described in his 1845 autobiography how one of his enslavers, Mrs. Auld, began teaching him to read when he was a child. Mrs. Auld’s husband ordered her to stop giving Douglass lessons.

    “Just at this point of my progress, Mr. Auld found out what was going on, and at once forbade Mrs. Auld to instruct me further, telling her, among other things, that it was unlawful, as well as unsafe, to teach a slave to read,” Douglass writes. “To use his own words, further, he said, ‘If you give a nigger an inch, he will take an ell. A nigger should know nothing but to obey his master.’”

    It has been a long, relentless journey to the World Cup for Iraq’s centre-forward Aymen Hussein, who propelled his country to the tournament for the first time in 40 years when he scored a winning goal against Bolivia in Mexico in the qualifiers.

    When he was just 12 and already playing football for a local team, his father was brutally murdered while buying materials to build the family home.

    A few years after that, his older brother was kidnapped, and he has not been heard from since.

    He was held at a US airport for ‘seven hours’. He just scored Iraq’s first World Cup goal in 40 years!

    Aymen Hussein scored Iraq’s first FIFA World Cup goal in 40 years in a landmark moment for the 2007 Asian champions.

    Iraq are back on the global stage after four decades in the international wilderness thanks to Australian head coach Graham Arnold, who guided the Lion of Mesopotamia through an inter-confederation play-off.

    Up against Erling Haaland and Norway in Group I on Wednesday (AEST), Iraq hero Hussein scored a memorable equaliser in Foxborough – just outside of Boston.

    His perfect 39th-minute header marked Iraq’s first World Cup goal since their 2-1 loss to Belgium on June 8, 1986.

    It was also the 34th goal of the 30-year-old’s international career and it came after he was questioned for seven hours by US immigration officials after touching down on American soil.

    Iraq’s journey to their first World Cup finals tournament in 40 years involved sacrifices unmatched by any other side. After 20 qualifiers, the team faced a decisive playoff in the Mexican city of Monterrey but, with Iraq dragged into the Middle East war and airspace closed, several staff and players had an arduous job getting there.

    “They had to travel from different cities to Baghdad by car or bus,” says René Meulensteen, the assistant to Iraq’s head coach, Graham Arnold. “Some of those journeys took up to eight hours. Then, from Baghdad they travelled roughly 15 hours on bumpy roads to Amman, in Jordan, where occasional flights were still operating. The other Asian‑based players made their own way to Amman, so they could all travel together.”

    Our civil lawsuit targets an organized cybercrime operation known as the "Outsider Enterprise."     Google is suing a major Chinese cybercrime operation, which it said facilitated scams targeting hundreds of thousands of victims, causing losses estimated in the millions.

    Roughly 9,000 fake websites and more than 1 million fraudulent URLs are allegedly connected to the group, as well as 55,000 spam texts flagged by Android users in just two weeks in May. The tech giant claims that the group, Outsider Enterprise, distributes phishing kits that enable criminals to run fake text-message campaigns impersonating well-known brands such as Google.

    Chinese cybercrime operation that used AI to scam 'hundreds of thousands of victims' sued by Google

    Google is suing to dismantle the infrastructure behind an alleged massive AI-powered cybercrime operation.

    On Friday, the tech giant announced a lawsuit against an alleged Chinese cybercrime network called Outsider Enterprise, which Google says uses AI in its campaigns to send scam text messages impersonating Google and other brands to steal passwords and credit card numbers. 

    Outsider Enterprise has financially scammed “hundreds of thousands of victims” with losses “estimated in the millions.” The group deployed 9,000 fake websites, one million fraudulent web domains, and 2.5 million texts sent to Android users in a two-week period, according to Google. 

    The company said, “55,000 spam texts were flagged by Android users in just two weeks this past May — that’s more than two text spam complaints a minute.”

    Lightning stops play: how electrical storms could disrupt the World Cup

    Under US rules, even a distant strike can suspend a game – and some will take place in Florida, the thunderstorm state

    Hot weather will be a major concern at the World Cup, but lightning may also prove a particular problem. Under US safety regulations, a strike within 10 miles (16km) of a stadium triggers a 30-minute suspension of the game, during which players must leave the pitch.

    The size of the safety zone was dictated by research on the distance that lightning can strike from a storm even with no clouds overhead. This is more than a theoretical risk. During a game in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in 1998, an entire team was killed by a single bolt of lightning. There have been many other deadly incidents.

    A NSW man has told an inquiry that he and a friend were picked up by Ivan Milat while they were hitchhiking in the 1970s.

    The account is one of many submitted to the inquiry into unsolved disappearances in NSW.

    The inquiry will hold its first hearing in Bowral after visiting the Belanglo State Forest.

    A New South Wales man who believes Ivan Milat picked him up while hitchhiking as a teenager in the mid-1970s has told an inquiry that a speeding ticket saved his life.

    Stevenson High School community cheers on New York Knicks star Jalen Brunson in NBA Finals against San Antonio Spurs

    LINCOLNSHIRE, Ill. (WLS) — Many Chicagoans may be rooting for the New York Knicks because of Jalen Brunson.

    The star point guard graduated from Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire. His dad is a Knicks assistant coach, and they are making NBA history. Rick Brunson is the first to coach his own son in the finals.

    ABC7's John Garcia went to Lincolnshire, where it all started for the Brunson family.

    Jalen Brunson wound up here at Stevenson because his father was an assistant coach for the Bulls. But Brunson has kept close ties to his high school. He won a state championship there. He even proposed to his now-wife in the school's gym.
