“This,” says Fiona Copeman, the hub manager of the Malabar wastewater treatment plant, “is what you would call our four-bus area.”

Copeman is gesturing to a model of the plant on a table inside the facility itself. She’s referring to a 300 cubic metre underground chamber that houses, as Guardian Australia revealed in January, a “fatberg the size of four buses that likely birthed poo balls that closed Sydney beaches”.

Sydney-Wollongong commuters finally get start date for new intercity trains

After a five-year delay, NSW’s multibillion-dollar fleet of new Mariyung trains will start carrying passengers on the South Coast rail line between Kiama and Sydney from next Tuesday, raising commuters’ hopes of more reliable and frequent services.

The new intercity fleet will be progressively rolled out on the line over the next year, starting with seven trains of four and six carriages, before longer eight and 10-car sets enter service during peak periods.

All 16 new trains to eventually be used on the line will terminate at Sydney’s Central Station – like those used on the Blue Mountains and Newcastle lines – partly because 10-carriage trains are too long to stop at platforms on the underground line between Redfern and Bondi Junction. The longest Mariyung trains also cannot be turned around at Bondi Junction.

The Mariyung Fleet will start carrying passengers on the South Coast line from Tuesday – five years after originally scheduled.

The fleet was originally slated to be in service in 2021 but a range of issues including ordering more carriages, the need for infrastructure upgrades and conflict with rail unions pushed back the delivery date.

The first Mariyung passenger service will leave Kiama Station at 7.56am on Tuesday, April 14, heading for Central Station.

Devin Carter On His Huge Fourth-quarter In Comeback Win Over The Pacers

Sacramento Kings guard Devin Carter spoke to the media following Tuesday's win over the Indiana Pacers.

He discussed his huge fourth quarter, staying ready through inconsistent minutes, and more.

Devin Carter, Kings hand Pacers 10th consecutive loss

Devin Carter scored 22 of his career-high 24 points in the fourth quarter as the Sacramento Kings beat Indiana 114-109 on Tuesday, sending the visiting Pacers to their 10th straight loss.

Sacramento rallied from a 20-point third-quarter deficit behind Carter, who made three 3-pointers and scored 15 points during a 17-5 run that put the Kings ahead 109-103 with 1:46 remaining.

Indiana pulled within 112-109 on Ben Sheppard’s layup with 9.5 seconds left before Nique Clifford made two free throws to keep the Pacers winless since the All-Star break.

Carter shot 9-for-13 from the field and 3-for-4 from 3-point range in just over 16 minutes for Sacramento, which has won two in a row for the first time since recording a four-game winning streak in mid-January.

Kings' Devin Carter: Tallies career-high 24 points

Carter produced 24 points (9-13 FG, 3-4 3Pt, 3-3 FT), five rebounds, three assists and one steal in 16 minutes during Tuesday's 114-109 win over the Pacers.

Carter set a new career high in scoring after dropping 22 of his 24 points in the fourth quarter. This was an incredible outburst by the 23-year-old, who'd been held to single figures in the scoring column in his previous three matchups. Sean Cunningham of Fox 40 Sacramento pointed out that Carter appeared to be walking with a limp after the victory, so it'll be worth keeping an eye on his status leading up to the second half a back-to-back Wednesday against Charlotte.

WA eyeing off huge chase to resurrect Shield season

WA have closed to within 148 runs of victory against Tasmania with six wickets in hand

Western Australia are still alive in pursuit of what seemed an improbable victory in their Sheffield Shield clash with Tasmania.

Set a target of 345 to win at the WACA Ground, WA were given a sniff when Sam Whiteman (57) and Cameron Bancroft (74) both made half-centuries on day three.

The opening pair put on 116 for the first wicket before WA reached 4-197 by stumps.

Aaron Hardie (32 no) and Teague Wyllie (10 no) are the unbeaten batsmen, set to resume on Sunday's final day with WA requiring a further 148 runs to win.

Pain-free and boasting a more aggressive on-court approach, Alexander Zverev is the unlikely poster-boy for anyone seeking an upset in what is shaping as the most predictable of men's Australian Opens.

For the first time since 2013, the top four seeds have advanced to the semi-finals at Melbourne Park.

Carlos Alcaraz and two-time defending AO champion Jannik Sinner have divided up the last eight major titles between them, while evergreen Novak Djokovic has a lazy 24 slams to his name.

Down a set against world No.3 Alexander Zverev, American sensation Learner Tien looked exhausted and unsure.

“Don’t show him what you’re doing,” Tien’s coach Michael Chang warned him, calling out from the sidelines.

Falling victim to Zverev’s trademark monster aces, Tien was giving away his position when receiving. The 20-year-old heeded his coach’s advice and switched up his style and proceed to win a nail-biting tie-breaker and clinch the second set 7-6 (7-5).

The annual pre-season clash between the Indigenous and Maori All Stars could be without as many as 16 players who competed in last year’s match, as squads are prepared to be announced next week.

Preparing for the upcoming World Club Challenge against Hull KR, Brisbane Broncos trio Jesse Arthars, Jordan Riki and Xavier Willison have been ruled out of the contest, as well as teammate Kotoni Staggs, who represented the Indigenous All Stars in 2024.

Latrell Mitchell facing heartbreaking blow as four Broncos players ruled out of NRL showpiece

Latrell Mitchell is facing the heartbreaking prospect of missing out on representing the Indigenous team in the NRL All-Stars game for the second year running. And a number of Broncos players have been ruled out of taking part in the annual fixture because they'll be in England for the World Club Challenge.

Mitchell has previously spoken of how significant the exhibition game against the Maori team is to the Indigenous community, and the NRL has agreed to keep it at the start of the year to give it more attention. But after an injury scare in pre-season training last week, it seems highly unlikely that South Sydney will allow Mitchell to play.

Raducanu given potential Sabalenka obstacle in Melbourne

Raducanu lost to Sabalenka in the Wimbledon third round last year

Emma Raducanu's hopes of a smoother Australian Open run have been dashed by another potential third-round match against world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

British number one Raducanu is seeded at a major for the first time since the 2022 US Open but has been pitted against the top seed at the earliest opportunity.

The 23-year-old will face Thailand's Mananchaya Sawangkaew in her opening match, with Austria's Anastasia Potopova or Suzan Lamens of the Netherlands waiting in the second round.

Two-time winner Sabalenka starts against French wildcard Tiantsoa Rakotomanga Rajaonah, while defending champion Madison Keys – who beat Sabalenka in last year's final – plays Ukraine's Oleksandra Oliynykova.

Emma Raducanu superfan James Bray earned internet stardom and free Australian Open 2026 tickets thanks to one simple word: Raddo.

Bray became an overnight celebrity after the British tennis champion singled him out and thanked him for shouting "Go Raddo" from the stands during a post-match interview.

Speaking to Wide World of Sports, Bray said he recently got in touch with Raducanu's agent and scored tickets to the rest of her matches in Melbourne.

"I shamelessly emailed her agent, her agent emailed me back and said, 'Yeah, we'd love you to come to the next match', so they've sent me a couple of free tickets, which is honestly very generous," he said.
