    Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport Pauses All Flights As Delta Air Lines Leads Worldwide Cancellations

    Delta Air Lines ran into issues on Tuesday at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport (ATL), and the disruptions have now continued into Wednesday, with the airline canceling the most flights worldwide due to severe weather in Atlanta. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) issued a ground stop at ATL on Tuesday, triggering thousands of delays and several canceled flights.

    Disruptions were high on Tuesday, with another ground stop also issued at Chicago O'Hare International Airport for a third consecutive day. As a result, there were 8,363 delays within, into, or out of the United States yesterday, along with 874 cancellations, according to FlightAware. Those issues have carried over into Wednesday.

    Delta cancels nearly twice as many flights in early 2026

    Delta Air Lines canceled 19,150 domestic flights in the first half of 2026, up 98% from 2025. Despite a slight schedule increase, its cancellation rate more than doubled. On-time performance improved slightly, suggesting recovery failures rather than routine delays.

    Between January and June 2026, Delta’s domestic cancellations surged to 19,150 from 9,696, even as its flight count rose just 3%. Mainline cancellations jumped 116.7%, regional partner cancellations 77.8%. The airline’s overall on-time rate climbed to 79.33%, second only to Alaska Airlines, indicating disruptions stemmed from recovery gaps, not daily punctuality.

    Internal memos cited staffing shortages and declining pilot trip acceptance as key drivers, with crew-related cancellations accounting for 35% of mainline issues. Severe winter storms in January and February exacerbated the problem, but operational fragility persisted into July, with nearly 5,000 cancellations that month alone – triple Southwest’s rate.

    Perth stargazers are in for a treat on Tuesday evening when the International Space Station appears in the WA sky.

    The space station will be visible for about eight minutes from 6.40pm as it travels south-east, according to astronomy experts in Perth.

    For novice space fans, there’s no need to stress about securing any special equipment to view the phenomenon — the station will be visible to the naked eye.

    ‘That Astronomy Guy’ Matt Woods says the space craft will look like a shooting star in the sky but will be almost as bright as Venus .

    “It’ll start out as a bright, steadily moving dot in the sky, then grow brighter and brighter as it crosses overhead,” he told PerthNow about the sighting.

    NASA has contracted a purpose-built spacecraft to push the International Space Station out of orbit in late 2030, steering the 430-tonne structure towards the remote South Pacific near Point Nemo, where passing astronauts can briefly be the nearest humans

    NASA's deorbit vehicle will turn the ISS from a continuously inhabited place back into an object, then guide its controlled breakup over the remote South Pacific.

    England International And Raiders Star Morgan Smithies Commits To Perth Bears

    The Perth Bears’ “Blitz of Britain” has continued with Test forward Morgan Smithies becoming the fourth English star to join the club for their historic debut season in 2027.

    The 25-year-old, who currently plays for the Canberra Raiders, has signed a three-year deal with an option for an extra two seasons.

    He will join Harry Newman, James McDonnell and Mikolaj Oledzki as England Test players who have committed to the Bears.

    Smithies played 105 Super League games for Wigan before joining the Canberra Raiders in 2024.

    The barnstorming forward has been a mainstay for the Raiders in recent years amassing 67 First Grade games.

    Bears' English raid continues, sign Canberra forward

    Perth have signed Canberra toiler Morgan Smithies, but a marquee foundation player continues to prove elusive for the NRL's 18th team.

    Smithies has inked a three-year deal and becomes the fourth Englishman to join the Bears for their return to the competition in Western Australia next year.

    The 25-year-old's deal contains an option for two further seasons beyond that.

    Smithies joined Canberra in 2024 and has become a mainstay of Ricky Stuart's forward pack, piecing together a strong 2025 campaign as the Raiders clinched the minor premiership.

    When Jolie Cao chose to do her undergraduate university degree in Australia, she knew it would be expensive.

    So she saved up for her move to Melbourne in 2024, and now works two casual jobs while studying full-time at RMIT University.

    Even though her parents in Vietnam help cover some of the costs, including paying tuition fees for her Bachelor of Design (Digital Media) degree, she has been facing growing cost-of-living pressures this year.

    The weakening of the Vietnamese dong against the Australian dollar over the past five months, combined with rising inflation here, means she is looking to take on more shifts to make ends meet.

    International students again in the spotlight as One Nation announces new policy

    International students who drop out of their courses would be barred from appealing to the Australian Review Tribunal and required to leave Australia before applying for further study under a new policy announced by One Nation.

    The proposal, announced by One Nation leader Senator Pauline Hanson, is aimed at what the party describes as widespread abuse of student visas through course-hopping, bridging visas and protection visa applications.

    In a media release issued this week, Hanson argued that some international students had “no intention to study” and were instead using the visa system to remain in Australia for work and economic opportunities.

    Dubai: Emirates is offering travellers greater flexibility amid changing flight schedules. Passengers can now rebook flights online within 72 hours of their original departure, helping reduce disruptions and avoid unnecessary trips to the airport.

    Bookings can be managed through the Emirates website at Manage Your Booking or via the Emirates mobile app, allowing passengers to select new dates and manage their travel plans from anywhere.

    For passengers who wish to reschedule flights earlier than 72 hours before departure, Emirates has advised contacting their support team directly. Assistance is available online at Emirates Support or via direct message at DM link.

    The airline emphasised that these measures are intended to ensure passengers can adjust their travel plans conveniently, while continuing to provide up-to-date guidance and support during evolving regional conditions.

    Michael Lin (林昭宏), head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' (MOFA) Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs, said Taiwan will once again join the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF) Leaders Meeting to be held in Palau from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4.

    Lin did not say what Taiwan's participation would entail, but it could involve holding side events at the forum as has been the case in previous years except for 2025, when Taiwan's representatives could not even go to the Solomon Islands, which hosted last year's forum.

    Department of East Asian and Pacific Affairs Director Michael Lin (林昭宏) said Taiwan would join the annual summit from Aug. 30 to Sept. 4, after Taiwan’s representatives were prevented from attending last year’s event in the Solomon Islands.

    He did not say what Taiwan’s participation would entail, but it could involve holding events on the sidelines of the forum, as it had in previous years.
