Itâs a sign of the times, perhaps, that my number one recommendation for this yearâs Melbourne international film festival (Miff) isnât actually a film â but rather, an astonishing, hour-long virtual reality production that fuses cutting-edge technology with a story steeped in ancient traditions and legends. The narrative follows Guan, a Taiwanese lawyer whose wife dies, leaving behind an unfinished novel, which he becomes obsessed with â entering its world and embarking on a profoundly emotional journey into the mountains. I wrote about this free-roaming production (meaning youâre not just watching, but also walking around) after experiencing it at last yearâs Venice Immersive, where it was a hot ticket item. This year’s festival opens with Wicker, co-directed by Australian filmmaker Eleanor Wilson. The 1600s-set film stars Olivia Colman as a fisherwoman who gets a basket maker to fashion her a husband (Alexander Skarsgård) out of wicker. It’s an offbeat, bawdy comedy that further proves Colman is one of the finest and most versatile actors working today.

Organisers have unveiled a killer program featuring more than 300 films, documentaries, shorts and immersive works from around the world.
Running from August 6th-23rd, the festival will open with the Australian premiere of Wicker, the acclaimed Sundance debut from Australian-born filmmakers Eleanor Wilson and Alex Huston Fischer. The fantasy drama stars Olivia Colman, Alexander Skarsgård, Peter Dinklage, Richard E. Grant, and Australian actor Elizabeth Debicki, while also competing in the festival's Bright Horizons Competition.
