A teenage girl with mummy issues? The horror craze is about to hit home

Director Lee Cronin unwraps a Sinners-style fright fest with a multi-layered look at family dynamics. Don’t say you weren’t warned.

It’s a pretty cool scene,” says Terence “Tez” Palmer of the moment a teenage girl possessed by an evil spirit crawls across the ceiling and drops into an open coffin containing her recently deceased grandmother. The dead woman’s relatives try desperately to pull her out, but the struggle sends the casket crashing to the floor. “There’s embalming fluid all over the place and the girl’s drinking it,” chuckles Palmer. “Everyone’s screaming and throwing up.”

The classic 1930s Boris Karloff film villain The Mummy has had more than a dozen films made featuring it, but when the 2017 film by this same name nearly bankrupted a film studio, I would have thought The Mummy was dusted.

But Canberra's Lake Tuggeranong College alumnus James Wan has King Midas's touch when it comes to film franchises, with Saw, The Conjuring, Aquaman, Fast and the Furious under his belt, the people with money seem to want to exhume the mummy character once again, as long as Wan and his Saw friends are in control.

Film Review: Lee Cronin's The Mummy; investigative horror story is unnerving and psychologically potent

Lee Cronin’s The Mummy is not the film you might be expecting – and that’s precisely its strength. Rather than leaning into the sweeping, action-adventure bombast typically associated with the title, Lee Cronin pivots sharply into something far more intimate and unnerving: a slow-burn, investigative horror story rooted in grief, absence, and the uncanny terror of something returned… wrong.

The premise is deceptively simple. When young Katie (Emily Mitchell), the daughter of Charlie Cannon (Jack Reynor), a journalist based in Cairo, vanishes into the desert without a trace, the emotional devastation fractures a family beyond repair. Eight years later, her sudden reappearance should signal relief, even joy – but Cronin is far more interested in the psychological fallout than catharsis. What unfolds instead is a deeply unsettling portrait of a family trying to reconcile memory with the reality standing in front of them.

Evil Dead Director’s Upcoming Haunt Breathes New Life Into Ancient Monster

For the past few decades, mummies have been featured monsters in movies that are more action-oriented than horror. The last time a mummy was featured as a horror monster in a mainstream film was in 1987’s The Monster Squad. One could be forgiven for thinking of mummies in terms of Brendan Fraser or Tom Cruise, because zombies were introduced, and typical mummies are just zombies wrapped up in bandages … right?

In the latest take on the monster, horror master Lee Cronin reminds audiences that mummies have a mystique that is steeped in ancient pagan ritual and occult practices. Millenia before there were zombies, the restless dead were said to have walked the earth, and the only way anyone knew to prevent such affliction was mummification. Early horror iterations called “The Mummy” often asked the question, “what if mummification wasn’t enough to contain the restless dead?” Even the action films tackle this query.

At Brad Scott’s first public appearance as Essendon coach in 2022, he spoke of the need for unity at a club that had excelled in tearing itself apart.

“If you’re not united, and you’re not going in the same direction, I don’t care what players you’ve got, [or] what facilities you’ve got – none of that matters,” Scott said.

In his fourth season at “the Hangar”, those words will be put to the test again.

Not even the most optimistic Essendon supporter is expecting their side to play finals this season. Scott, himself, acknowledged after the heavy defeat to Hawthorn that there’s an obvious gap between the Bombers and the competition’s best teams.

‘Not a big club’: Great’s scathing Bombers fall from grace claim as trade ‘miss’ to ruin next decade

Essendon’s colossal decision not to trade Zach Merrett at last October’s deadline could set the club back years, according to a triple premiership great.

Citing Richmond’s converse approach to rebuilding from scratch by trading its wantaway stars, three-time Tigers flag-winner Jack Riewoldt believes the Dons “completely missed the trick” by holding Merrett to his contract.

The Bombers kicked off their season in unsightly fashion against Hawthorn – the club Merrett sought a move to – last Friday, falling by 62 points and conceding their fifth-worst score in the Brad Scott era.

Original story: Instagram, the Meta-owned app, reportedly ran into issues on Tuesday. At the time of writing Downdetector logged over 4,700 complaints. Most users complained about Instagram messages, saying they could not directly reach out to a person.

A screengrab from Downdetector showed the sharp spike in problems reported by Instagram users.

Downdetector also showed that most people faced issues with the app, while some also had troubles with the server connection and posting or publishing. As per the outage map, shared by the site, places like Los Angeles, Phoenix, Chicago, Washington, and New York were among those grappling with outage issues.

Instagram down: Thousands can’t send DMs as widespread outage hits US

Instagram Down left thousands of users scrambling on March 10, 2026. The Meta-owned platform experienced a widespread outage affecting direct messages across the US. Users couldn’t send or receive DMs, leaving many frustrated and stranded mid-conversation.

Instagram’s messaging system became completely non-functional during the hours-long outage. Downdetector tracked the unprecedented spike in user complaints beginning in the evening hours. Many users reported they couldn’t send texts through direct messages, creating a communication blackout across the app.

The Meta-owned platform offers public interaction features, but many users prefer private one-on-one conversations via DMs. Without this function, the app became largely useless for personal messaging, forcing millions to turn to competitors like WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger.

Update Chrome now: Zero-day bug allows code execution via malicious webpages

Protect your team’s devices and data – no IT skills needed

Google has issued a patch for a high‑severity Chrome zero‑day, tracked as CVE‑2026‑2441, a memory bug in how the browser handles certain font features that attackers are already exploiting.

CVE-2026-2441 has the questionable honor of being the first Chrome zero-day of 2026. Google considered it serious enough to issue a separate update of the stable channel for it, rather than wait for the next major release.

The latest version number is 145.0.7632.75/76 for Windows and macOS, and 145.0.7632.75 for Linux. So, if your Chrome is on version 145.0.7632.75 or later, it’s protected from these vulnerabilities.

CISA Warns of Google Chromium 0-Day Vulnerability Actively Exploited in Attacks

An urgent warning regarding a newly discovered zero-day vulnerability in Google Chromium, which is reportedly under active exploitation in the wild.

The vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-2441, affects Chromium’s CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) engine and can enable remote attackers to execute arbitrary code on a victim’s system.

According to the advisory published on February 17, 2026, exploitation involves a use-after-free condition in Chromium’s CSS handling that may lead to heap corruption.

Attackers could exploit this flaw through specially crafted HTML web pages, potentially compromising systems when unsuspecting users visit malicious or compromised websites.

CISA added CVE-2026-2441 to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities (KEV) Catalog, underscoring the urgency for organizations to apply mitigations immediately.

SailGP: Practice racing canned, but big breeze for weekend's racing

The Practice Racing scheduled for Friday at ITM NZ SailGP, was cancelled after a forecast of lightning – which didn't eventuate.

In its place came a 15kt plus easterly (onshore) breeze, which was not sufficent to keep the clouds flying, and Auckland was clothed in a grey murk which reduced visibility to a few hundred metres, if that. Not the ideal conditions for 13 SailGP teams to be trying to limber up in the congested, landlocked venue.

However three teams were allowed to go through "commissioning", leaving at varying stages of the day – essentially doing their own thing.

The Kiwis to test their new port stern section setup, which was completed on Wednesday, following their collison with the Swiss after just 90seconds of racing in the first event of Season 6 in Fremantle. The Swiss were repaired overnight in Freo, sailed the next day, and so weren't entitled to commissioning time today.

The world’s leading young tennis star has issued a message to Australian teenage phenom Emerson Jones, imploring her to keep her composure and ignore the hype beginning to surround her name.

Speaking after her 4-6, 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Queenslander Olivia Gadecki in the second round of the Brisbane International, top 10 sensation Mirra Andreeva revealed the recipe for success, that has made her the hottest prospect on the international stage.

Andreeva Learning to Deal with Prodigy Pressure

When Mirra Andreeva raked in Dubai and Indian Wells titles in the span of the month, at the age of 18, expectations and hype soared around the rising Russian. To be fair, it had been growing for a while. In 2023 Andreeva demonstrated her enormous potential by winning her debut main draw matches at Roland-Garros, Wimbledon and the US Open. A year later, she had become a major semifinalist in Paris, where she became the youngest player to reach the last four at a Grand Slam since Martina Hingis.

You’d think she would have entered 2025 virtually immune to the hype, but Andreeva, now ranked No.9 in the world, says that she was hit by another wave last season, and she admitted that it did slow her roll.

Don’t expect a sweltering start to summer: Melbourne’s notorious “four seasons in one day” weather will be in full swing from the beginning of December.

A sluggish start has been tipped for the warmer months after some of the heaviest spring rainfall in more than a decade.

“We’re in the midst of an unseasonably cool November overall,” said Bureau of Meteorology senior meteorologist Angus Hines. “It has been a little bit of a sluggish start to summer.

Amazon Issues Attack Alert — 300 Million Customers Are At Risk Now

Updated November 26 with a startling new warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation regarding account takeover attacks using brand impersonation methods; details of a new report confirming the seasonal dangers, alongside the original Amazon alert that all 300 million users need to be aware of, as hackers and scammers continue their attacks.

There’s no escaping the annual Black Friday sales, which seem to last longer every year. Equally, there’s no escaping that Amazon is the top dog in both the event itself and as a target for cybercriminals. With an estimated 310 million active users in 2025, Amazon has always been a prime quarry for scammers, hackers and other highly-targeted cybercrime activity. Now the online retail giant has issued a stark warning that every customer must take seriously as attackers strike. Here’s what you need to know and do.

Amazon warns customers of holidays cyberattacks as FBI sees $300M in thefts: ‘Account takeover fraud’

Amazon is warning its over 300 million customers to watch out for cybercriminals who are out in force this holiday season impersonating reps from the e-commerce giant — as the FBI said online crooks have stolen nearly $300 million by taking over victims’ accounts so far this year.

The largest online retailer in the world recently emailed customers about criminals trying to “get access to sensitive information like personal or financial information or Amazon account details,” according to Forbes.

The warning came as the FBI said since January, it’s received 5,100 complaints about “account takeover fraud” — in which criminals gain illicit access to accounts in order to rip them off — inflicting losses of over $262 million.
