Australia's largest supermarket chain, Woolworths, has seen its profit surge by 18 per cent in the last financial year to $1.138 billion. Despite this, July inflation figures show annual price pressures easing across the economy.

Meanwhile, one of Australia's largest private credit investment managers has limited redemptions on its $2.3 billion secured property loan fund.

Follow the day's financial news and insights from our specialist business reporters on our live blog.

It released its half-year profit results this morning, with first half revenue, recurring revenue, and gross profit margin all up.

But its underlying EBITDA was -$12.4 million (-256% on the previous corresponding period), with lower gross margin and increased fixed base for scaled operations, and increased wages and sales and marketing costs, and it reported a statutory loss after tax of $32.2 million (compared with $2.1 million profit after tax in PCP), after individually significant items of $15 million.

The Aussie dollar just did something it hasn’t managed for months

The Aussie dollar surged and share market stuttered following the release of inflation figures in a clear sign traders are genuinely entertaining the chance of another interest rate hike.

Wednesday’s data put inflation for the 12 months to July at 3.5 per cent, and the all-important trimmed mean – the RBA’s preferred underlying measure – at 3.6 per cent.

While the headline figure was a 0.3 per cent slowdown from June and the trimmed mean was steady, both remain well beyond the 2-3 per cent target, and both were higher than market forecasts of 3.2-3.3 and 3.5 per cent respectively.

Hot CPI a kick in the guts for ailing economy: Betashares

The Australian sharemarket erased gains on Wednesday after inflation came in stronger than expected, keeping the risk of further interest rate increases by the Reserve Bank of Australia in play.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index was down by 0.1 per cent, or 13 points, to 9151.60 at 2.03pm AEST, after being up by more than 0.6 per cent before the Australian Bureau of Statistics released the July price data.

While inflation slowed from 3.8 per cent in June to 3.5 per cent last month, it was above the 3.3 per cent forecast by economists. Trimmed mean – the RBA’s preferred gauge – held at 3.6 per cent.

Oil edges higher as Bessent vows punishment for Iran’s partners

The Australian sharemarket climbed for the second session on Tuesday as the high-flying healthcare sector continued its stellar run and investors digested another round of corporate results.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index finished up 0.7 per cent, or 61.50 points, at 9164.60, with nine of the 11 sectors stronger.

Investors also shifted into other risk assets, with bitcoin climbing to $US80,000 for the first time since May, while the market also weighed the minutes from the Reserve Bank of Australia’s August meeting, which showed several members think another interest rate rise may be required to return inflation to target.

ASX gains as Coles, Ansell rise, BHP hits record; Woodside falls

The Australian sharemarket advanced for a second straight day after a flurry of corporate results fuelled broad-based gains, helping it shrug off a mixed finish on Wall Street.

The S&P/ASX 200 finished 61.50 points, or 0.7 per cent, higher at 9164.60, with all 11 industry sectors bar energy in the green. The local market added 0.5 per cent on Monday. The Australian dollar was trading at US71.48¢.

Reporting season continued, with Coles, Woodside Energy and Ansell among companies that released results. Investors also digested the minutes of the Reserve Bank’s latest meeting, when it kept interest rates on hold.

The central bank two weeks ago chose to keep its key rate unchanged at 4.35 per cent on signs that elevated inflation was gradually easing and the labour market beginning to loosen, giving it scope to assess incoming data for any signs that upside risks might “crystallise”.

Iran vows to retaliate against countries that cooperate with fresh US sanctions

Test of US rhetoric will rest on whether nations such as India, China and Russia view economic threats as credible

Tehran has vowed to retaliate against any country that cooperates with the US attempt to impose fresh sanctions against Iran in what the Treasury secretary, Scott Bessent, has billed as “the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary”.

In advance of the US announcement, the United Arab Emirates, Iran’s single biggest trading partner in the Middle East, announced it was ending all trade with Iran, a move Tehran believes was coordinated between Washington and the UAE.

The US has said it will impose sanctions on any country or entity trading with Iran – what are known as secondary sanctions.

Iran faces 'greatest financial offensive ever', says US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent

The US treasury secretary has threated Iran with "the single greatest financial offensive ever", claiming the US-Israel war with Iran was "entering its endgame".

Scott Bessent said the US would sever all economic ties with the country in "an economic D-Day" and that any nation partnering with Iran financially would also be isolated.

Bessent's threat to the Iranian regime follows several U-turns and extended deadlines from US President Donald Trump's administration on previous threats.

Iran dismissed Bessent's comments and said it would shut down all oil exports from the region "if the war continues", according to news agency Reuters.

The Iranian regime has also issued a new warning to shipping not to pass through the Strait of Hormuz without its permission, the agency reported.

Pauline Hanson’s deleted post deepens One Nation’s migration muddle

Pauline Hanson has deleted a social media post containing her immigration targets from just five months ago, plunging One Nation into a deeper state of confusion as its MPs contradict themselves and each other over the party’s signature policy platform.

Hanson posted on X on Sunday to say her party’s policy was to cut net overseas migration to 130,000 people a year, after Farrer MP David Farley cast doubt on that target in a Sunday interview by saying it would inevitably be higher.

New England MP Barnaby Joyce then backed Hanson on Monday morning, insisting the 130,000 net migration figure had been long-standing One Nation policy. “We’ve been saying that all along,” Joyce told Sunrise. “It’s 130,000 net overseas migration.”

McLaren's Lando Norris celebrates winning consecutive F1 grands prix. (Reuters: Benoit Tessier)

Reigning world champion Lando Norris has doubled his grand prix win tally in 2026, producing a pair of brilliant overtakes to win the Dutch Grand Prix.

Norris won the last grand prix in Hungary before the mid-year break, and continued that good form while teammate Oscar Piastri struggled for pace.

Mercedes championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who led for stretches in Zandvoort, finished second ahead of teammate George Russell who obeyed team orders in the late stages of the race.

Oscar Piastri was running third, but lost the position thanks to a slow pit stop. The Australian struggled for pace in the second half of the race and finished a distant sixth.

Lando Norris surges past Russell and Antonelli to snatch Dutch GP pole

What a title fight Formula One would have on its hands if McLaren could make the final steps with their car. This was demonstrated to dramatic effect on Saturday as Lando Norris hurled his ride around Zandvoort to claim pole position for the Dutch Grand Prix. It was a prize secured against the odds and his own expectations, hours after he had bemoaned being in no position to fulfil his hopes of mounting a successful title defence.

The McLaren car is immensely quick through the fast corners, perhaps the class of the field, but is haemorrhaging time through the slow stuff, the package not quite complete, or suboptimal as Ron Dennis would have had it. Yet Norris managed to eke out its very best across the circuit to see off the Mercedes of George Russell and Kimi Antonelli into second and third place. The season’s dominant car was subdued by Norris in qualifying for the second race in succession, after he took pole in Hungary.
