Maddison Levi: Wallaroos debut for explosive sevens star has New Zealand on red alert | Angus Fontaine

The code-hopping winger is one of the hottest properties in world rugby but says she feels ‘vulnerable’ ahead of her eagerly-anticipated first 15s Test cap

Maddison Levi is widely considered the most exciting rugby player in the country. But this weekend the Gold Coast 24-year-old is a “vulnerable” rookie as she faces up to the biggest challenge of her career: finally making her hotly-anticipated debut in the 15-a-side game for Australia in a historic Test against New Zealand on Saturday.

“I’m really excited,” Levi says. “Representing Australia in two codes is a pretty special achievement and this is a new environment and a massive challenge. I know I’ll probably make mistakes out there and I’m feeling pretty vulnerable but I’ve always set myself high standards and this is about me becoming a better player.”

‘Is NZ ready for her?’: Aussies unleash sevens freak on Kiwis

The Wallaroos are confident that Maddison Levi is ready to tackle New Zealand’s mighty Black Ferns after the sevens superstar was named to make her Test debut in Auckland on Saturday.

Levi had hoped to play at the 2025 Rugby World Cup but withdrew from selection after fears that she was being set up to fail without adequate preparation.

Now 24 and already Australia’s all-time leading sevens try-scorer, Levi has been named on the bench for the Wallaroos’ 100th Test against all nations.

“First and foremost, Maddi’s just a really natural footballer,” assistant coach Mike Ruthven said.

“I think we’ve done a really good job this week to create a space and create an environment where she feels really comfortable to be herself.

AFL LIVE: ‘Tell me about it’ – Neale admits how difficult leaving the Lions would be as Pies prepare for wildcard round

Collingwood coach Craig McRae admits Scott Pendlebury’s availability for the wildcard game next week is uncertain.

McRae said Pendlebury would have scans for the knee bursa issue that forced him off the ground in the first half, but he also revealed the issue could be hamstring-related.

“We had some precautionary action around some tightness in his knee that could be hamstring-related,” McRae said.

“It’s on the minor side but if there is something there, then a scan will show that.

Lions superstar Lachie Neale has praised his young teammates and declared it is an “exciting time to be Lion”, but still appears set to leave the club at the end of the season.

Oil set for weekly surge as US seeks to throttle Iran’s economy

Australian shares finished the week down 0.6 per cent as the oil price pushed higher and US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent’s effort to steady the bond market proved fleeting.

The S&P/ASX 200 Index fell 24.9 points, or 0.3 per cent, to 9058.9 on Friday, with six out of the 11 sectors in the red.

This followed a nearly 1 per cent fall on Wall Street as the yield on the US 10-year note rose 6 basis points to 4.70 per cent. The effect of Bessent’s buybacks of long-dated government debt had worn off after just 24 hours.

ASX slides for second week amid sell-off in local banks

Australian shares have fallen for a second week amid high oil prices, US bond market concerns and a sell-off in local banks as housing market gloom persists.

The S&P/ASX200 fell 24.9 points on Friday, down 0.27 per cent, to 9,058.9, as the broader All Ordinaries lost 28.8 points, or 0.31 per cent, to 9269.7.

The top 200 has dropped almost 2.5 per cent since resetting record highs earlier in August after housing market concerns sparked a banking sell-off that has loomed large over earnings season.

Energy and gold stocks offered some support as oil prices climbed and historically high US debt and Treasury yields rattled investors, prompting the US government to intervene in its roughly $US60 trillion ($A84 trillion) bond market.

Live: Wong outraged, ambassador called in after IDF soldiers cleared over Australian's death

Penny Wong says Australia is "outraged" Israel Defense Forces personnel involved in a strike that killed humanitarian worker Zomi Frankcom have been cleared.

World Central Kitchen has rejected the Israeli military's account of the strike that killed seven of its colleagues, including Australian woman Zomi Frankcom, saying it's "deeply offensive".

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have cleared soldiers who were involved in the strike on the humanitarian convoy in April 2024.

The IDF said there were serious failures that led soldiers to falsely identify a Hamas fighter was travelling in the convoy.

However, it was concluded the IDF commanders' decisions "did not raise reasonable suspicion of criminal misconduct".

The foreign affairs minister, Penny Wong, says the government is “outraged” over the decision by the Israel Defense Forces not to pursue a criminal investigation into the strike on an aid convoy in 2024 that killed seven people, including Australian Zomi Frankcom.

In a statement issued this morning Wong says it falls “far short of the accountability we expect” and she will call in Israel’s ambassador to Australia, Hillel Newman, and has “directed Australia’s ambassador to Israel [Neil Hawkins] to convey our views directly to Israel as the Australian government considers next steps”.

Zomi Frankcom: Australia 'outraged' after Israeli decision not to prosecute over killing of aid worker in Gaza

Australia's foreign minister has said she is "outraged" over an Israeli government decision not to prosecute those responsible for the death of aid worker Zomi Frankcom, who was killed in an IDF strike.

Frankcom was an Australian aid worker with World Central Kitchen who was killed in Gaza with six other colleagues by an Israeli airstrike in April 2024.

Foreign Minister Penny Wong said the decision "falls far short of the accountability we expect" and that she would call in the Israeli ambassador.

Australia would continue pressing Israel "for justice for Zomi and her colleagues", she said in a statement on Thursday.

The history of Test cricket between England and Pakistan stretches back to 1954 and has been a vibrant one over the years. Yet, for all the memorable battles, plus the cultural ties between the two countries and a fair bit of scandal along the way, a trophy that denotes the rivalry is still to be created.

England lost the Crowe-Thorpe trophy to New Zealand this summer, will look to retain the Basil D’Oliveira trophy in South Africa this winter, and hope they can win back the Ashes next year. Trophies for encounters with India and West Indies go back so far they have been retired and replaced by new ones in recent times.
